My 5 year old son enjoyes watching Spongebob Squarepants. I am somewhat torn as to whether this program has any redeeming qualities what so ever and whether or not I should permit him to watch.
Confession time:
I sat down with him to watch (because he asked me if I would), and I have to say, I found it strangely compelling.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Any advice??
Help!

Just wait til you see Sailormouth. SpongeBob and Patrick learn some 'sentence enhancers' from the side of a dumpster and start using them in their speech.
The sounds to bleep them are all nautical, like dolphins and foghorns, and it cracks me up so much.

My kids all love it. I held out on letting them watch it for quite awhile. I can't stand it, but it makes them laugh, and there's nothing awful in it except for being annoying and being on ALL THE TIME.
My husband just recorded a different cartoon that Tom Kenny (Spongebob's voice) does. He recorded "Spongebob" saying hi specifically to my kids, which was pretty cool.

I still watch tons of kid shows, haha. When I was in 6th grade, Spongebob was all the rage. But I was the only one not into it.
Then again, at that time I had this affinity for Paul McCartney. I was always the outcast. Now , I see these people who mocked me acting all cool for liking The Beatles. Pffffft.
But hey, gimme Arthur, Little Bear, or Gullah Gullah Island, and I'm happy. Especially Arthur.

When I was growing up it was Atomic Ant, Bugs Bunny/Road Runner, Hong Kong Fueuy and all the rest of the classic Hanna Barbera library.
And then the "experts" had to stick their noses in and we had the pure garbage that prevailed in the 1980's and early 1990's. Cartoons have been slowly improving since then, particularly with the anime influence.
I like Spongebob in very small doses. Have to admit that they have a few truly inspired episodes, particularly the "Sailormouth" episode.

She can sit and watch them all day (if we would allow her to) She asked me once if she could record a marathon that was playing saturday, so I said ok, looked on the DVR and had 47 episodes recorded....

SpongeBob is okay, my kids outgrew it fairly fast. They like Dragon Ball Z, which is a 90s anime, my brother-in-law owns every season on DVD so the kids get to watch it ALL the time. It's okay. The only problem is the slight leftism that's in it, the main character Goku, he likes to give second chances to enemies he fights, when all of them end up turning on him anyway and try to kill him or his sidekicks. he has a counterpart named vegeta which is his brother or something, who is brutal and kills anyone that gets in his way, including those who are on his side that are "weaklings". There's also a hint of environmentalism, but it's nothing like "We are destroying this planets natural beauty". I was fairly interested so I decided to check out some modern day anime, MUCH different and much more mellow, half the episodes in dragon ball you have them yelling and powering up, lol.
I grew up on scooby doo and the jetsons. Cartoons these day disgust me, some of the things I see that are supposedly for young kids.

DBZ is awful it takes them like 3-4 episodes to resolve a combat.
As for making it a political issue, that is just lame.
And just a note about anime, the vast majority that makes it on to American TV (expecially the stuff marketed to children) is utter crap compared to the stuff that doesn't get airtime here.

::nods:: I never watched Cowboy Bebop, but it looked like something I could watch, especially when I saw clips from the movie. I actually liked Samurai Champloo, Witch Hunter Robin, and some of Wolf's Rain. I loved Gundam Wing, and occasionally watched Ronin Warriors. The problem with what cartoon network does is the way they chop the shows up for commercials in really awkward places, and the American dubing is NOT always good. Sci-fi has anime Mondays where they show Gurren Lagann and RaveMaster ::twitch:: The English dubbing of RaveMaster is unbearable, and the theme song is so bad it's hilarious to me.

If you liked Samurai Champloo and Wolf's Rain then you'd love Cowboy Bebop.
I haven't watched much anime as of late but from what I remembered, I actually liked the dubbing. They understand the audience now and pick competent voice actors.

I very rarely have occasion to watch anime anymore. But when I do, it has to be English subtitles only, with the original Japanese language. Very few dubs do justice to the original.

Personally, I take less out of subbed over dubbed. I'm not able to pick up some of the subtleties of spoken language when it's subbed sometimes for me, which is why prefer a good dub. The keyword is good. The previously mentioned DBZ I remember had horrid dubbing. Aside from the horrible voice actors, whole translations where removed and replaced with something completely different. Cowboy Bebop on the other hand along with Samurai Champloo had excellent dubbing.

Honestly, I've found it more useful to be a snob about the qaulity of the anime you're going to watch than being a snob about the dubbing. Usually, from my experience what I'm actually willing to watch has good voice acting. Normally I watch both the subtitle AND the dubbed, at least on anything I own. My boyfriend speaks Japanese so he's fairly knowledgeable when a translation or dubbing job is good or not, simply because he understands the language, and since we watch it in both we can usually cross reference it.
There are certain American voice actors who do dubbing on a regualr basis and are quite good at it, Crispin Freeman and Lisa Ortiz come to mind.

Word of advice, AVOID subtitles at 3:00 am.

Help!
:shifty:
Oy. I watched a few episodes, and I found that there were no social redeeming values. I felt like I lost IQ points for having watched it.
But it has a cult following of sorts. My heart goes out to you. Enjoy it. You can have MY portion.

<tune of "This Old Man">
I hate you, you hate me
We'll kill Barney happily
With a big shotgun and Barney on the floor
No more purple dinosaur.
I don't know if you know this...
One of the last scenes in the movie "Mafia" has that very effect (except it was a harpoon). My father told me that when he and my mother saw the movie in the theater, that scene received a standing ovation. Unanimously.

My youngest daughter has autism and down syndrome. She absolutely loves/adores Spongebob. I think I have seen almost every episode produced.
She is non verbal. She laughs like crazy watching Spongebob and it is simply music to my ears. I can sit with her for long periods and watch Spongebob. He's a great goofy, lovin', innocent sponge.
She was in 7th heaven this weekend with the Spongebob Squarepants marathon bash and 10 new episodes.
The little guy who lives in a pineapple under the sea has given her such happiness.
Sigh. Social redeeming value is found in the most unlikeliest of places.
I'm glad the cartoon brings your daughter joy.

Squidward can't stand Spongebob.
Spongebob, however, loves Squidward, and doesn't usually realize how miserable he makes the poor squid.

Steven Blum has a pretty badass voice.
