"We Card Under 40"

These signs are up wherever tobacco is sold, where I live.

It's one of the stupider things I've seen.

Does anyone else see the total lack of logic?

It removes the burden of having the cashier guess how old you are before he cards you. Some 39 year olds look young, other 17 year olds look old.
I worked in a grocery store for a number of years, and I learned real fast not to guess how old customers were based on their appearance.

Then how does she know you're under 40, in order to card you?

You take things very literally.
From a business owner's standpoint, it's easier to say "card everyone who looks like they're under 40" than "everyone who looks under 18/19/21."

If you get carded, take it as a compliment.

When I was in Denver the adult bars closed 8 P.M. on Sundays while 3.2 clubs where 18 year olds could drink were open til 12.
You could not get in Sundays without proof.
If Methusalah was not carrying proper I.D. he would not get in.
My room-mate was 35 and dating a 19 year old.
She was never proofed in the adult bars but they both were proofed in the 3.2 clubs and when he had forgotten his wallet he couldn't get in.

My favorite moronic sign is:

"No beverages permitted- especially alcohol".

Think on that one for a minute:)

That reminds me of an experience of mine. I'm 52 and look it, complete with a greying beard. I went into a store and the clerk (a trainee??) asked to see my drivers licsence. I showed it to him. He then asked me to take it out of the pocket so he could scan the bar code??????

I don't know if he was trying to impress his boss with diligence (if so, what boss would be impressed), but he succeded in annoying a customer.

No, I think he was more into following rules than he was into seeing the customer in front of his face.

An example of the current state of customer "service", similar to "next in line" rather than "can I help you, sir."

I know, I know. There's a line of drooling boys behind me offering to pick up the tab for my $1 Diet Coke at McDonald's.

Happened this morning, actually.

Only, I got up and out just to give someone a jump after he left his lights on all night.

Now, I'm sipping yumminess.

sarcasm But Bill...don't you know? Some poor kid could get his hands on some Kools or Camels...which would mean another lifetime smoker..which would mean more tax revenue for his state government and federal government..which would mean....hey...wait a minute..why are they carding again? lol /sarcasm

I look my age...don't mind that one bit. Some kid asks to see my i.d at the grocery story I frequent in my neighborhood.....I just give him the look...ya know the one...'stop pulling my leg' look. Yeah..I don't get carded anymore..odd huh? lol

More then once I've had 20 something year olds get upset when they got carded. The program is that you get 27 year olds that look like there 17 and 17 year olds that look like there 27.

Who do you think gets fined/fired if they sell to someone underage?

So you put up a sign that says "We Card Under 40" then the 20 something year olds don't get so upset when they get carded.

Saves a lot of getting cussed at.

I understand the reason for it. The wording of the sign sounds ridiculous.

How do you know a person is under 40 unless you have already carded them? It's a merry-go-round in logic.

Very few 40 year olds look like they are under 18 (or 21).

A lot of 20 somethings look like there under 18 (or 21).

You tell someone that they look under 40 it's a lot harder for them to get mad. They may think your boss/company is dumb for doing it but they don't take it out on the cashier.

Having had to call the police because a 20 somethings year old would not show me his ID because I should me able to tell he's over 21 just by looking at him and started throwing beer bottles or pull a knife I like the sign..

Repeat customers you know there age. New ones you tell "(You look under 40 and point at the sign", if they still don't like it you say "There is a camera over there if I don't card you I get fired". Most will show there ID.

The problem is the 20 somethings that do not have the "balls" to admit they still look 17 and don't care if someone gets fired for not checking ID. A store can be fined or shut down. A cashier can be fined or go to jail for selling to someone underage.

Yes it sounds ridiculous but having someone start breaking beer bottles is not funny at all.

The last time I was carded was when I was 32... the drinking age here was 19 then. By that standard they would card me when I was 53, which is definitely pushing the limits of rationality for a 21 year age restriction.

Some States have alcohol restricted drivers licenses... issued when a person is convicted of DUI. In those States, the vendors of alcohol must card everybody regardless of age.

The oldest person I carded was 47 years old. She did not look like she was over 18. If your 53 and there is a question if your over 21 you could be carded.

Having to put a sign like that up to keep people from getting mad at the cashier shows how rational some people are. If you look underage don't get mad if they ask for your ID.

They do get upset at the cashier if the cashier doesn't think they look over 21.

I don't mind getting carded for anything. I am 40, but am told that I don't look it. (I personally think I look a lot younger because I am usually toting around a 6, 4, and 2 year old)

For those of you complaining about getting carded, have you ever worked a job where you will be fired, arrested, tried, fined and have this on your record if you serve someone who is not of age? I have and I have been the managers of such employees. I lost a couple because they were too lazy to card people.

I was also a cashier in a grocery store who gave seniors a discount on Wednesdays. I was horrible at guessing someone's age. I soon lerned not to ask someone if they were old enough after asking a few that weren't. I started saying to people, "You aren't old enough to get the discount, are you." Well it solved my problem. Those that weren't old enough weren't insulted and the ones that were loved me for thinking they weren't old. Win-win.

BS! If somebody gets "very upset" when they are asked for ID they are not mature enough to be drinking anyway. At that point they should be shown the door and if they refuse to leave have the cops called on them or be shown the hollow end of a shotgun.

I agree that somebody that gets "very upset" when they are asked for ID is not mature enough to be drinking.

As for being shown the door and calling the cops if they refuse to leave.
If there is a crime (the store has been robbed) the cops take 15-20 minutes to get there, if there is no crime your talking about 1/2 to an hour.

Since your talking about people who are not mature they may get upset, start breaking things or attack the cashier.

If you shown someone the hollow end of a shotgun when your life is not in danger you go to jail. Like if someone is breaking all the beer bottles in the store but not attacking anyone you can not point a weapon (or just display a weapon) at them.

Since most of the time the cashier is alone putting up a dumb sign that makes his job a lot safer seems like a good idea.

It depends on where you live, whether you can use lethal force in a case like that. You can where I live.

I still think the sign is stupid.

As far as making people angry, the sign can do that also.

Two women are in line buying beer or cigarettes. You card one and not the other. The one you don't card gets mad because you think she looks over 40.

I'll take it to your extremes- she then proceeds to tear up the store. All because of the sign.

The store is the one that gets angry calls and letter's.

You get very few female trouble makers that are 40 years old almost all are males between the ages of 18 and 30.

So the store should take the sign down and put the cashiers in danger because the sign looks stupid.

Will you explain to the cashier that gets hurt why taking the sign down is a good idea?

I honestly believe you are overdoing the angry bit.

I clerked at a 7-11 for three or four years and sold beer- a lot of it. It was in a bad part of town and that was most of our sales. We didn't have a sign like that. I never had anyone get mad when I asked for ID. I asked anyone I suspected might not be 21.

I had a few get mad when I wouldn't sell to them without an ID, but that's all. Not because I asked, but because they didn't have one or were too young and didn't want to show one. Your sign wouldn't have helped that situation.

Wrong... If you ask someone to leave your establishment and they don't, you have every right to throw them out. And if that requires a shotgun (because you are a 120 pound clerk and the guy is a 200 pound ******* and starts breaking things or attacks you) that is perfectly ok with the law in most States.
