I am not a computer wizard by any possible terms.
I was in basic terms pestered to down load an update from micrsoft a couple of weeks ago. They asked me to install Internet Explorer 8 thinking it was part of the update package I agreed.
What a mistake.
It froze up my desk top. Heaven forbid if I opened up a link in a trusted email it would error all over the place and stare at me in a cold froze state until I rebooted.
Doing anything on the net became more difficult the longer I used the new IE8.
So doing what any one with a "what to hell question" I go to microsofts web sight to find nothing about the bug filled error messaged monster I downloaded but web page of posters even bigger problems than my freeze up's screaming for the old broswer back.
So in responce to the posters requests I read a number of times some very snide "well you agreed" to help out those whom are trying to get their computers back to normal use.
I suppose anyone who has gotten therequest to update to IE8 has already fallen for it..however by chance it was a NO for consideration... dont download IE8 until they fix the bugs.

Well, I did download the upgrade. But I don't use IE on a regular basis (just a few websites with webapps geared toward IE). For the rest, I use firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/upgrade.html). The Noscript and Adblock plus add-ons really help in preventing my system from getting turned into garbage by adware, malware, etc.
But if it really bothers you, you could just roll back to a restore point?

I removed IE8 by add or remove programs to get back the old IE7.
They wanted to lock people into the new broswer taking out the option to remove IE8 with an update but the system froze up the desk top to write in the hard drive on my end.
It's still pestering me to upgrade back to the IE8 now. They wanted people to think of this as an update not a total make over of thier broswer. It doesnt work and they have enough people complianing after of course going through hell to even post any compliant to microsofts customer support.
To read the responces towards users of the new broswer users experiancing some real problems that they cannot fix in snide down right insultive, hostile replys was a real eye opener and not like microsofts past policy to just ignore the compliants until they go away.
Just dont open the application!
As for firefox
Firefox is very good for a broswer without doubt, it's just I like the IE7 better because it's easyer for me to use as I have had this type of system scence Windows 3.1 so I know how to fix any problems that should arise without tech support.

man, I feel like I made the right call then. Mine was downloading that update and when it was finished it asked if I wanted to install IE8. I wanted to read up on it before loading it so I chose NO. I hate ie7 as it is. I don't understand why it periodically eats up my resources and bogs everything down to load a page. jeesum crow I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!
is firefox free? That add blocker things sounds good. I think most of th time loading a page is spent on these anumated adds that are more and more frequent. Pretty soon pages are going to be a postage stamp of what you're actually looking for and an acre of these stupid, bullcrap refinancing, make money at home and dating adds.

VERY good call on your part.
I dont blame you about the adds getting bigger. I have high speed cable internet.
I had the slow down problem. Went into the motherboards programs that come with the mother board that has a heads up display to tell me what is using rescources. Found it was yahoo that was reading the websights I went into to pick adds for display related to the locations I went on the net.
I went into the manage addons and disabled almost everything yahoo except the search function that works with AVG. AVG wont let yahoo read my cookies or history nore will allow it to store any info for yahoo to access on the hard drive.
Google I found is the bigger offender of personal computer privetcy as it will install a sub program to in basic terms read your every move on the net slowing one down to a snail crawl. Not to mention taking all the info, pictures, what programs and serial numbers of said software in silent scans of Windows and Mac computers.
Go to the manage addons and disable google tool bar helper and google search function and two hidden addons to see if it requests access. If it does request access then you will need to do a google clean to stop the spyware.

On three different computers here, IE8 has been flawless. The wife's Acer netbook, #1 son's XP x64 system, and my system that uses HyperOS that gives me the ability to have multiple OS's on one computer. I have 10 Operating systems installed. 6 are Vista 64, 3 are WIN 7 64, and 1 XP 32 bit install. I have IE8 on all of them, and I dont have any issues with IE8 on any of my OSs.

Out of curiosity, why do you have 6 copies of vista installed?

One is a basic 'if all else fails' install with just MB, video, and mouse drivers. One for general web surfing with good virus/malware protection. One for 'shooter games' like Farcry 2. One for IL2 1946 a WWII Combat flight sim. One for the wife to use for her geneology. And the last as a place to copy any of the others for testing any applications/drivers/etc. that I think might be a problem. If all goes well, then I can copy that back to the original partition for actual use. If it does bork the system, I still have the original intact so I don't have to do a re-install because something 'broke' the system.
By keeping my shooters, and IL2 partitions dedicated to just those applications, I get better performance since the system isn't 'bogged down' by a lot of othe software that will run in the backround. I keep those two installs very 'lean and mean'. Nothning installed that isn't absolutely necessary th run those particular applications.

I stay away from IE as much as possible. Firefox.
Better yet, I stay away from anything made by Microsoft.
Firefox 3.5 is great on Mac OS X.

Interesting...
Have you tried installing the fps's on xp partitions?
I'm not sure if it still holds true, but in the past I know a lot of people saw better performance on xp than vista.

That was done 2 years ago, and they were using nVidia video cards. nVidia was woefully lacking in driver support for Vista. In fact, at one point nVidia's drivers were responsible for something close to 50% of all BSODs in Vista reported to Microsoft.
However, with 2 year newer hardware, and updated drivers, game performance in Vista is just fine. I'm running a Phenom II X4 940 (3Ghz), 8GB RAM, and an ATI 3870x2 video card. I haven't found a game yet that I can't run at it's highest settings, and still get playable frame rates.
Vista is nowhere near as bad an OS as some would lead you to believe. The biggest prblem was not with the OS itself, it was with all of the hardware mfgs that didn't supply decent drivers.
Shucks, look at all of the GREAT reviews on WIN 7. Every one says "This is what Vista should have been". Well, truth be told, WIN 7 IS Vista under the hood, with a few tweaks. As someone on a tech site I frequent said: "WIN 7 is Vista that you are allowed to like." For my 3 WIN 7 RC1 installs, I actually use the Vista x64 drivers for everything, and it works just fine.

Yeah, i left that little disclaimer in there for a reason, couldn't really find anything conclusive on google in the past year... but yeah, sounds like a nice setup, I've got a couple year old laptop that makes me regret not having a desktop a bit more every day.

Get back with me when you can get a QUAD CORE processor, and run a TRUE 64 bit OS

This is one element of geekdom I can do without: the need for the absolute latest technology.
Listen, unless you're rendering another Star Wars film, it really won't matter.
I'm happy with my iMac. If someone thinks my iMac is primitive compared to the newest stuff, I could care less.
