View Full Version : Who's your daddy? Oh?! He's man-made from embryonic stemcells...

Science may make men obsolete. And their carbon footprint too...

A team of British scientists claimed Wednesday to have created human sperm using embryonic stem cells, in a medical first that they say will lead to a better understanding of fertility.

Researchers led by Professor Karim Nayernia (http://topics.breitbart.com/Karim+Nayernia/) at Newcastle University (http://topics.breitbart.com/Newcastle+University/) and the NorthEast England Stem Cell Institute (http://topics.breitbart.com/NorthEast+England+Stem+Cell+Institute/) (NESCI (http://topics.breitbart.com/NESCI/)) developed a new technique that allows the creation of human sperm in the laboratory.

How has this made man obsolete again?

If sperm can be made by tweeking embryonic stemcells, then women wouldn't need men to make babies.

I'm against embryonic stemcell research, by the way. In Japan, they've advanced themselves enough to use adult cells to make any cell you want...including stemcells. But here, in America, all that funding that some fought over for embryonic stemcell LOCKED all research into that one focus--embryonic stemcell research.

Once they create an embryonic stemcell egg for the embryonic stemcell sperm, then heck, who even needs citizens anymore to clutter up the kingdom?

This is great news.

No more Jerry Springer episodes of "Bobby Ray, you are the father".

The government can control reproduction in a lab and replace the population in a structured planned as needed manner.

No more Paris Hilton silver spoon babies and no more octo mom bull crap.

Just like ants in a farm! Cool! Will we be able to venture out on picnics? Oh, wait a minute...ant kingdoms kill the males after mating and are run by all females.

Okay, just like a bee hive then! ....ut oh...same as ants.

Elephants? ...nope...they toss the males away.

:boohoo:

So what you are saying is there would be absolutely no change to society.

And I thought this was a harbinger of progress, of moving forward... :frown:

I wish they'd leave the human species alone to evolve (or not evolve) naturally.

Soon sperm and eggs will be sold next to the cans of genetically altered creamed corn.

I wish they'd leave the human species alone to evolve (or not evolve) naturally. So essentially you're against all medicine.

And why do you omit the next sentence in the article? Because it would completely invalidate your ranting?

Gee I hope that someone does not get them mixed up when making dinner!

No, I'm not against all medicine. There is a difference between helping the body to support itself (antibiotics, etc), and tweeking the genes to manipulate and/or create a perfect human (defined by man's definition of "perfect human").

What do you mean by the next sentence in the article? I got the link from Drudge yesterday, of the two provided...I took the shortest synopsis. I'll go check it out to see what you mean.

Oh, I'm not ranting. Believe me. You should see the stuff that bioscience has already in the works which has tons of approved funding. Take a stroll down the freak show of genome research as it "advances" toward fulfilling the "intellectual choices" progressively minded "judges" make for you and future humans. Ranting is not allowed--it's considered evidence of genuine and organic neurotransmitter ability which calls for permanent straight-jacketing. Robot mentality is civil obedience.

Okay, I went back to the link and got the next sentence (copied below). So you think that this discovery will be HELD in place? There are many throughout the WORLD who would pay, steal, kill even, to get this and CREATE an army of slaves to do their bidding. I don't see how this sentence changes anything, imo. Other than creating optimism in those who believe that any government KEEPS secrets which are held (or not held) in place by HUMANS.

They stressed that the sperm, developed from stem cells with XY chromosomes (male), would not be used for fertility treatment, as this is prohibited by British law and in any case is not their main interest.

Surprisingly, we are in partial agreement, but NOT in the way that you think!

Social implications of our modification of the human genome would be too costly to withstand. We, as humans, already display bias based on such slight allelic differences as an increase in melanin content of one's skin! Imagine if we genetically engineered humans with different leg structure?

Ultimately, we should leave the majority of our combined germ line alone.

Soon sperm and eggs will be sold next to the cans of genetically altered creamed corn.

Hardly. I do expect a big rush for "designer" babies, but that would be a very very very stupid decision on the part of the parents.

To parents foolish enough to desire genetically engineered children:
No, you are not entitled to the "perfect" baby. Yes, you are actually modifying our cumulative germ line, and yes, you are putting us at risk for pandemics in the future (homogeneity of genetic information makes it easier for viral/bacterial pandemics).
