View Full Version : On every issue there's plenty of perspectives, but is there a TRUE one?

This is a question of truth and ideology, not about left or right.
On any issue that arises, everyone seems to have a different perspective. When we watch the news, we are hearing stories, and those stories are always a little different depending on who is telling the story.
The question is: do you believe there is in fact a true perspective, or "the correct story" on any given issue? Or is it simply a whole bunch of different interpretations, none of them being "true"
Now, you may have standards by which you choose to believe one interpretation vs another, but do you believe that any interpretation is inherently true?

Take the history of anything as an example, 5 people may witness an event, and each have a different account of what happened.
Do you believe that one of them must be correct?
Do you believe that none of them would be correct but there is still a correct account (even if people do not or cannot give it)
Do you believe there is no correct history and all history is interpretation and there is nothing else to be called true outside of our own interpretations? (that is, that everything is relative and there is no such thing as truth in the absolute, or objective sense)

I'm open-minded when it comes to most things. There are very few issues where I'm steadfast.
Because the world is so subjective.

I think that's best, but do you think there is an actual "correct" or "true" stance, interpretation, or understanding of reality?
Or do you think all we have is subjective interpretations and everything is relative without an actual basis for "truth"

The latter.
Siddhartha Gautama once said:
"All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else. "

I think this is one of the most fundamental questions when looking at accounts of history (such as the news we all read, listen to, or watch) or exchange viewpoints in any discussion.

Whenever I see a story on the news that I have personal information about, they always get the details wrong.
It's logical to assume they get all stories a bit wrong, not just the ones I'm familiar with.

Depends on how in depth you care to research the topic.
A hearsay conclusion can never be substituted for factual information, unless ones goal is to never be more than a storyteller.

Mine.
If everyone else would just listen to what I have to say, about everything then they would know that I am the only one that knows the truth.
And, that's a fact.

The question is: is there such a thing as "factual information" or "the true story"
That's both, does anyone have the true story, and also, is there such a thing as truth, or do we all simply have different interpretations and truth is purely relative.

The Bible is a good example of this.
In the gospels of the new testament, there are 4 very different versions of the same story.

The reason I am the way I am is because of this, govt. rules, regulations and laws are based on the opinions of mortals yet once they are law are cast in stone with little or no wiggle room, I prefer the free market just for that reason, live free or die.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. Facts are stubborn things. Interpretations of fact are relative.
Personally, I don't believe in the whole Aristotlean "true essence" line of thinking, but that doesn't mean there aren't concrete facts to base things off of.

Everyone is pretty much full of ****.
The expression is: Everyone is pretty much full of **** except you and me... and between the two of us, I'm not so sure about you. ;)
