Mark,
Please tell us exactly why General Colin Powell, Iraq War Hero, then Darling of the Republican Party, passed on the opportunity to even seek the nomination? If I recall, General Powell's popularity was sky high at this time. Why did he bow out in favor of an aging Senator Robert Dole? Give us the real reason he passed or was passed over at this historic moment. I think that the answer to his current waffling and political incoherence may be found in this sequence of events.

Because his wife was afraid for his safety.

As a black woman I feel compelled to state that Colin Powell would never run for president or be the real first black president, in my opinion. Simply, because then he would have to be pinned down on what he actually believes in. He has never shared with us, the American people what his core values are. I'm confident General Powell will never run for the highest executive office in the world. Even if this office has been depleted at this present time. Therefore I digress.

Because his wife was afraid for his safety.
I remember it was because his wife suffers from some kind of mental/emotional type problems. I don't remember exactly what it was, but I think she suffers from depression. So I admire the man for doing what was best for his beloved wife. I wish some of the other politicians would have such high character. If he had run for President, his wife would have been under the spotlight, and vulnerable to massive attacks by the liberal press, the same way Sarah Palin has been attacked. Powell was not willing to allow his wife to become the subject of their vile nastiness, risking a possible worsening of her health. For this, I admire Powell immensely.
