I may be insulin resistant and never be able to stuff myself with pizza again :(
But, that doesn't mean I can't talk about pizza.
What is the best pizza?
The best pizza at a sit down place (but I haven't had one since I left Idaho in 1980) came from Godfathers.
Best in Ohio? Rotolos is the best pizza.
Best delivery pizza? Pappa Johns.

To this day, the best pizza I ever had was at a place near Indiana University in Bloomington called Ivanhoe's. That was in the late 70's and I have no idea if it is still there.

Yeah, the college kids always know the best pizza.
That's why when I would schedule meetings for the Chairman (of a graduate program at OSU) and his students, the students always insisted on Rotolos pizza.
College kids always know. I got some myself one time and realized they were right!

Papa John’s Pizza is my current favorite.
My favorite from the past has to be Godfathers. They went kaput except for the original in Omaha, Nebraska.
Another Omaha favorite is Pefferoni’s Pizza who is famous for their wheat crust. Papa John’s came out with a wheat crust not long ago so, that just adds more reason to love ‘em.

Best delivery would have to be LaRosa's. Too bad they're not out here.

A local shop you never heard of, makes the best pizza I have ever bought.
It's run by a very erratic old Italian man.
He reported a robbery once. When the police arrived, he told them he was just checking their response time. He paid a big fine over that.
The best pizza is one I grill over wood, in my back yard.
If you ever try one, you may not ever buy another one.

I like Godfather's (managed one before) and I like Papa John's. We get pizza once a week from a local place. Good pizza, great deal. 18" 2 topper plus cheese sticks for $18. Feeds my family dinner plus a snack the next day. Another local place has the best white garlic pizza I have ever tasted. They don't use pizza sauce, they use a garlic butter sauce. I top it was sausage, mushrooms, onions and cheese and LOVE IT. Both local places we frequent are ran by true Italians. The one owner just became a US citizen this past year. It doesn't get more authentic than that folks.

There is a chain out here called Round Table that also has great pizza. They did a special edition pizza called the "Mama Zella's" that was fantastic.

They're in Texas.
You can probably go to their website and see where they're located.
I don't like it. The sauce is sweet like ketchup.

I figure they must be a national chain, because I see their commercials on TV, but they are not here in California... at least not in the parts of the state I'm familiar with.

The best Pizza I think I ever had was at the Capricciosa at Papallion's, Levico, Trentino, Italy.
Maybe it was the best. There were several others that could be said to be as good.
Never had a US pizza that ever came close.

Deep dish from Giordano's or Edwardo's. Uno's is a close second.
Back in the late 70's - early 80's, Pizza Hut was really, really good. Now its just crap.

When I was 14, I quit the paper route and got a "real" job working at Leonardo's Pizza. It was a little 15-foot-wide stall in a strip shopping center. Leonardo was actually a little Polish guy named Fran. We made pizzas that were better than anything I've had since.
Fresh scratch-made dough every day, all veggies were freshly chopped, he made his own recipe of Italian sausage fresh, and we did some really crazy good combos like lobster/smoked oyster.
To give you an idea of how long ago that was, the hit songs that were playing on the radio as I worked included Sounds Of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle and Flowers On The Wall by the Statler Brothers.

Lou, have you ever tried the Pilsbury Pizza crust in the dairy section, next to the biscuits? That is the only crust I use when making homemade pizza. As far as the rest goes, the most common mistake people make is using too much sauce on a pizza when they make it at home.

Well I'm certainly not going to suggest that Oklahoma has better pizza than a NYC or Chicago do, but if you're ever in Oklahoma City or Tulsa and have a hankering for pizza, go to Hide-A-Way pizza. It's really very good!

I used to go to Papa Murphy's, which is a place where you get pizza that you bake at home, but now I go to...... get ready....... WalMart to get bake at home pizza! I usually get a sausage pizza, and then add my own other toppings, and they come out great. :D

I don't know if they have it anymore, but Shotgun Sam's Pizza Palace off La Fortune Blvd, (in Tulsa, OK) was GREAT.
I miss 'em. For some reason, everytime I hear "Joy to the World" (Three Dog Night's version, you know "Jeremiah was a bullfrog.") I think of Shotgun Sams. I guess because that song was a big hit in OK in 1970/71 (it was written by Hoyt Axton who was like the Patron Saint of OK) and they played it a lot at Shotgun Sam's.
I miss that place. 'sniff. :(

Back in the "good old days" before my Mom got so damn concerned about fat and cholestorol and became a health nut (dammit) she used to make the BEST homemade donuts, using refrigerator biscuit dough.
She would cut a hole in the center of each biscuit, dip them in plain old sugar or cinnamin sugar and them deep fry them. OH MY GOODNESS, THEY WERE GOOD!
I haven't had one of those since and I sure can't enjoy one now with my cholestrol and health problems. :(

In the 1970's.... Valentino's pizza from the original place in Lincoln NE.
Beau Jo's originial place in Idaho Springs Colorado. They used to have a pizza called 20 miles of bad road. Great stuff.
I agree the old Godfathers was good also.

When I was going to grad school in Berkeley, you could get a slice & a coke for $2.00 from Blondie's Pizza. Not sure if it was the cost or the taste but I have fond memories of that place. :D

The best pizza on the East Coast is at a little outfit called Mack and Manco's - they're in Ocean City and Somers Point, NJ. On weekends in summer, people line up for an hour just to get into the place.

the best corporate wise is Pizza Hut.
demolishes the others
however, the best pizza I have ever eaten is at a small independent pizza shop about 50 miles from Orlando fla
Dunno if it's still there on US 1, about 15 miles north of Titusville
named "Valentinos"
Italian owned, and they are old school.
They make pizza that you could DIE eating.
I mean, after eating their pizza, there's nothing left to experience.
:))
They have a pizza that they make that is huge, and square in a pan.
it comes out in 2 pans-- each half is enormous-- about 2 feet by 3 feet-
and thick with toppings.
It feeds about 10 adult people..........
or me.

I was thinking it was something like Chucky Cheese.
