We went to San Diego last December and everyone was talking about how they wanted to go to In-N-Out Burger because it was so good, and I was skeptical, well I proved myself wrong, I went not once but twice, it was that good, even worth the $50 cab ride it took to get there(but I went with a few other guys and we split the fare).

So I have to say In-N-Out Burger, too bad its only in California, Arizona, and Nevada.

As for something I can get around here in Texas, Whataburger is good but expensive. I prefer Jack in the Box honestly. Whataburger tastes better but Jack in the Box has better bang for the buck.

McDonalds isn't bad but I don't consider their burgers real... they taste good though

If we're talking strictly burgers, I think McDonald's double quarter pounder is pretty good. I used to like Hardees but there aren't any around here, so it's been a long time since I've had their food.

As far as fast food sandwiches in general goes, there's a local chain called Spangles that has really good sourdough sandwiches.

Wendy's tries to hard for the female weight loss demographic though... which is why their portions are much smaller and their prices are higher. Have you seen the Double Stack or Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger the meat patties on those are razor thin.

There's a local chain we have in Alabama...I think they're also in Georgia and Mississippi...Jack's...It's a really good burger.

As far as national chains go...I'd have to go with Hardee's/Carl Jr....but they're expensive...

Out of the big 3 I have to choose Wendy's.

The junior bacon cheeseburger used to be really good. But now it's pitiful. Like a white castle burger only not as good.

Those are on their budget menu...A Bacon Cheeseburger or a 1/2 lb Double Stack are just as big as the ones you get at Burger King...You wanna talk about small, have you looked at the 2 all beef patties on the Big Mac lately?

I like Wendy's single with cheese. I also like Hardee's Jr. Thickburger and with their beer battered onion rings..mmmmmm. If I eat at McDonald's, I want a McRib, not real crazy about their burgers. Burger King microwaves everything any more, so I don't eat there very often. For something a little different, I like an Olga Burger at Olga's. Their burger is on flatbread with lettuce, tomato, onion and their Olga sauce (which is actually plain yogurt). Love it.

I like Burger King.I could be wrong but I think BK pre-cooks their meat and simply warms it up when you order. For me the best burger is a Tommy's burger (only in Los Angeles) smothered in their own secret recipe chili. Second best is Pink's hot dogs (also have burgers) also with their own secret recipe chili. Problem is as much as IU like these burgers I only eat them when I know I can take the rest of the day off with indigestion. Love the taste, hate the end result.

I understand that.

We've got a local place called "The Rocket"...best burgers I've ever eaten...they've got one called the Whataburger...It's about 2 lbs of meat and then all the trimmings...Sits on the plate about six inches high...if you can finish the whole thing it's free...I've always had to take half of it home...and like you said, the after effects suck.

Welcome back D.

Two pounds? No problem. Unless the bun is huge. I eat at least two pounds of burgers whenever I grill them at home.

The best FF Burgers are at Backyard Burgers. I don't know if they are veverywhere or not but there are several here.

We use to have a Backyard Burgers here...I liked them...closed down about a year ago though...a lot of the fast food chains in town have, in preparation for our new bypass...that was suppose to be completed 3 years ago. But that's a topic for another thread.

Well, to answer the OP I've been to a few In-N-Out burgers. There are several here in the Phoenix area and I'll agree, they're fantastic pure burgers without a whole lot of muss and fuss, but last month I was in Grand Junction, CO and got a taste of SmashBurger.

In-N-Out doesn't play around with many options, but Smashburger does have the options yet keeps the same concept. Sure, you can get a grilled chicken sandwich, and sure, you can order beer or wine, and fast food just met no-nonsense menu that includes things that people really want, and not some milquetoast happy meal.

http://www.smashburger.com/

We don't have smashburger here in Phoenix yet. Until we do, In-N-Out is the preferred method of clogging my arteries.

In my hometown, population 2,100, there's a place called the Corn Coach, named after their famous corn dogs. They operate out of a remodeled Airstream camper with a plywood addition. Seating for about 10 people, if you're skinny.

Order the "Piggy Puff", a 1/2 lb hand formed monster, made from locally raised angus beef. Comes complete with enough onion rings to clog the arteries of your grandchildren's children. Oh, and a side of cole slaw.

Dayum good eatin'.

Hands down I do have to say that In-N-Out has the best burgers. All the time, anytime. I like mine "protein style".

As for Tommy's, it has to be the one on the corner of Beverly and Rampart in LA. The others really do taste the same just without the atmosphere.

White Castle is highly overrated. Equal to the "Bag of Burgers" from Dick's in Spokane, Wa. (Had too many "BoB's" during sons Jr. hockey days.)

Steak 'n Shake does have great food. My son was at a hockey camp in Springfield a few years ago and there was one next to our hotel. We ate there everyday for a week. YUM!

The Hardies in Minot, ND is just plain GROSS!

As for Milkshakes, Big Bun in Boise, Id has the best milkshakes ever. Followed by Westside Drive In also in Boise, Id.
Westside does have great Patty Melts!

yep, was going to mention this. There's also a Grill '57 in garner that is basically the same premise. Those are some darn good burgers. Talk about a gut bomb delight.
When Hardees revamped their burgers a few years back I thought they were excellent for fast food. To me MacDonalds ranks the worst of the big 3. The best thing they've got going is fries and ther filet o' fish sammich. So simple yet it crushed all the other guys' fish sammiches.
I got a friend a hot dog from a Fat Burger in Vegas but unfortunately I was not hungry at the time. They smelled great and I've heard they are some good burgers too.

Not sure about elsewhere, but at the Whataburgers in TX you can at least get jalapenos on your hamburger. Any joint that doesn't offer that option is second rate.

And, anyone who thinks chili on a hamburger is "wrong" should just stick to tofu and not try to participate in the world of American Classic Foods.

The Whataburgers here have the jalapenos too but where they lose me is the diced onions. If you're going to put onions on a burger, it needs to be a man-onion slice, not some pickle-relish wannabe. I'm going to have bad breath anyway so lay on the onion in a good whole slab.

And, anyone who thinks chili on a hamburger is "wrong" should just stick to tofu and not try to participate in the world of American Classic Foods.

The slice of cheese is required, and should be placed between the chili and the bun.
That keeps the chili from disintegrating the bun before you can finish the burger.

When I was pregnant with my 15 year old, I CRAVED White Castle Belly Bombers with cheese and definately with their horseradish mustard. I kept trying to tell everyone it wasn't all her hair that gave me heartburn, it was my diet. Taco Bell was another thing I couldn't get enough of. The greasier, the spicier, the better. In seven pregnancies, I never had a problem with morning sickness, but I had heartburn that could put an elephant down.

Just to add: The frozen White Castles are no where near as good as the fresh ones.

Haven't seen a Whataburger in 5 1/2 years.

The Sonic Cheese Burger with jalapenos in Texas was pretty good as well but they royally suck here in Illinois, I don't know why but they do?

Chili on a hamburger is good, real good if it is flaming hot spicy chili.

I have picked up White Castle burgers for my mother who dearly loves them when I have gone to the real world, but to this day I have never eaten one myself, they smell bad to me.

Know why?
The secret ingredient in the meat is a little bit of liver.

White Castles is one of those things that you either LOVE them or HATE them, there is no inbetween. I happen to love them. Now the funny thing is, I CRAVED them when I was pregnant with Kayla, but couldn't even stand the smell of them when I was pregnant with Caleb. I am glad that I went back to lovin them after I had him.

"Ding-dong! May I interject for a second? As a Burger Shack employee for the past three years, if there's one thing I've learned, it's that if you're craving White Castle, the burgers here just don't cut it. In fact, just thinking about those tender little White Castle burgers with those little, itty-bitty grilled onions that just explode in your mouth like flavor crystals every time you bite into one... just makes me want to burn this ************ down. Come on, Pookie, let's burn this ************ down! Come on, Pookie! Let's burn it, Pookie! Let's burn this ************ down! Let's burn it down! Let's burn it! So you guys maybe should just suck it up and go to White Castle."

I hate them although I have never eaten one.

I had to roll the windows down in my car because of the smell of the nasty things.

My mother was willing to share but I declined. :silenced:

I did have a really good buffalo burger in Oklahoma City, it wasn't at a fast food joint, but it was good.

White Castles burgers were my favorite when I was young. Of course there was no such thing as McDonald or Burger King back then. :frown:

White Castles were 20 for $1 and dad used to bring home 40 them every Friday night.

Man.... that sure brings back the memories. "Buy 'em by the sack" wasn't just a slogan..... it was a necessity. :D

When I was stationed at Minot AFB ND I use to go to the Hardees across the airport all the time to get the monster bacon cheesburger. The sandwich was more shaped like a 6 inch sub it seemed than a round normal burger. It was heavenly to eat but of course bad for my health lol. Now that I am back home in North Carolina I like a local chain which is called Cookout.
