View Full Version : So who does Eminem belong to?

July 1st, 2009, 1:24 am
Jamie Foxx said at the BET awards that Michael Jackson was the property of the black race was shared like, you guessed it, a piece of property.

As much as I can't stand the inability of SOME to drop the race issue and let the world go in the direction it wants to, I am curious as to what will happen to Eminem when he passes (god willing many years from now). Do whites get to claim HIM? Did we share Eminem (Marshall Mathers) with other races? What about any white performer?

And if we are going to treat "icons" as property like Mr. Foxx seems to be doing, why do we need to be sensitive to how that piece of property is remembered? When my last car broke down, I did remember the time it successfully drove me to North Carolina and back, but I remember more the big rust spot on the front passenger wheel well.

You mean Jamie Foxx?

When whites have a long history of oppression in this country and Eminem becomes a milestone in interracial music (for lack of a better term), then yeah.

But how long are we going to let the period of oppression last? It seems like Jamie (thanks for the correction) wants to drag it out till he's gone so that he can go down as a hero to his race. I'm just looking for someone to be a hero for the country or people as a whole and drop the race issue. Really? When will we be done? I mean we have a black president for god sakes (not a very good one, but still).

And MJ is infamous for breaking racial boundaries in the 80s. Need I remind you that MTV didn't want to put on a black dude?

Translation: Being the victim of past racism becomes a legitimate entitlement for perpetual future racism on the part of the genetic descendants of those victims.

It's like being an abused child......it gives one the right to continue to be a victim and even victimize others because it's not your fault......hey you were a victim in the past!

Someone else can have Eminem.........i've got no use for him.........if I wanted a white punk with delusions of grandeur i'd pull a bait car down to the local trailer park and catch 20 of them.

Personally I was going to hold out for Halle Berry but to each their own. I was even willing to throw in Brittany Spears whole family to "sweeten" the deal.

I have trouble believing that your post is accurate. The 7 minute Thriller video ran endlessly on MTV when the album topped the charts..........I remember being a teenager trying to tune in to see my rock heroes & getting frustrated that Michael Jackson was on MTV again.

Let's not forget that this same period in the 80's was also when the Cosby Show was America's favorite family.

Although I don't like the way Foxx said it, I think I understand what he was actually getting at.

I think he was trying to say that African Americans should take ownership of MJ because of what he accomplished. Meaning they should look at him as a infuencial member of thier race/culture. They should remember him as a black entertainer who achieved so much and helped bridge the gap between White music and Black music. They should take ownership in him in the fact that HE was one of THEM and he will always be an icon for thier culture.

I think in reality it is how many white americans view Lincoln, we take owneship of him because he was a white man who helped end slavery. We are proud that a member of our race accomplished such a task, when we are told that White people don't do anything for Black people we have visions of Lincoln and use such references as a defense. WE take owndership of Lincoln as a member of our race and culture and I don't think many White people believe that to be racist.

I think the main point Foxx was trying to make is that African Americans should accept MJ for what he accomplished as a member of thier race and culture just as they do for MLK.

Personally I don't take "ownership" of anyone based on the color of their skin. Do you keep a little score card in your pocket and everytime a white person does something cool, you check off a box? "Yeah, score one for the white folks!!"

Do people really live in that kind of world? I know I don't and I don't know anyone who does.

But how did it get there to play incessantly?

http://eightiesclub.tripod.com/id127.htm

Nevertheless, all involved with Thriller knew that getting MTV to play Michael Jackson videos was anything but a sure thing. The reason was simple: In the channel's first eighteen months, as it had become a cult hit among white suburban teenagers all over America, it had played only a handful of clips by black artists. From Bob Pittman's and everyone else at MTV's point of view, it was simply a matter of format. Ever since the MTV flag was planted in the moon during the summer of 1981, the channel had positioned itself as a rock and roll station. And because only a few black acts -- Tina Turner, Prince, Joan Armatrading, the Bus Boys -- played what most people called rock and roll anymore, only a few had their clips played on the network. For Pittman, programming head Les Garland, and the rest of them, the situation was no different from radio, where few album rock stations played many black artists.

But that argument didn't fly with everyone. MTV's original head of talent and artist relations, Carolyn Baker, who was black, had questioned why the definition of music had to be so narrow, as had a few others. What's more, as MTV received more and more press attention, a growing number of journalists and music critics and black artists really began to slam the network for its segregated view of music.

Despite the inability of Rick James and other black artists to get their clips on the air, in January Michael Jackson and Epic went ahead and made videos for the two singles they had just released

But we didn't share Lincoln! Nor did we share FDR and his misguided theory that giving people whatever they want is a way to harbor success! I think it's okay to be proud of your race, but shouldn't we be more proud to be AMERICANS???

let's overlook some truths here because it is so convenient to do so.… he went to extreme lengths to erase his blackness. he would not even father his own biological children their skin would be black....chooses white sperm donors and surrogates. marries two white women...all this created a lot of trash talk about him from his own people. blacks gets ****ed about this kind of stuff. i hear it straight from their mouths. black women go ballistic when one of their brothers marries or dates a white woman. they see it as betrayal to their race. huge number of blacks believe whites should not be allowed to adopt black children believing they alone can only raise them in a black culture. Whatever that is……can’t even say “white culture” …..wonder if that is thinking about these white kids being denied a white culture upbringing? of course it is only whites that are racists!

I've never been the biggest fan, but I respect Eminem's talent.
