View Full Version : Does This Happen In Other Towns?

My town, Carlyle Illinois, in their infinite stupidity (my opinion) had their 4th of July Fireworks display last Saturday night, the 27th of June.
I believe it is always done on the Saturday night before the 4th.
It just really bugs the heck out of me so I refuse to go watch and refuse to donate to the display fund.
What happened to celebrating the day on the day?
Oh well at lest I can still control our 4th of July cookout and have it on the 4th.

I think they do it to avoid the 4th rush/drunkeness.
They do that around here, but it's not as bad. Mine is on Saturday, though.

Oh, and maybe it's just because of the competition. All the towns having it on the same day, maybe they think splitting the events over a week or so makes them better attended.
But, I mean. Christmas starts in October. I'm okay with having Independence Day last longer. :)

Well...around here the 4th of July weekend is a weekend when many families head up north...and by many..I mean many many.
Having the fireworks a week ahead of time may have something to do with actually wanting people to show up

We have a recreational lake here where they set off the fireworks.
On the 4th of July no matter what day the place is packed with out of town people as well as packed with locals but for some reason they have them on other days with less people?
It also doesn't make sense because collecting donations from the cars coming to watch is one of the main ways they pay for the fireworks.

Our fireworks are jointly hosted by Detroit and Windsor.....they set them off over the Detroit River. It's cool to go on a boat and anchor. It is crazy to try and go downtown.
My brother had tickets to the Tigers Game that night...they left right after the 7th inning stretch so they could get out before the fireworks started......downtown is friggin nuts.

Over a river is good.
I could kick my butt, I lived near Boston for several years but never went to hear the Pops on the 4th....
A million years ago, at least 31years, I went to watch them from the top of the spillway across the lake from the fireworks barge, about a quarter mile away and it was awesome.
It was also on the 4th.

I wish a buck was still silver.
It was back when the country was strong.
Back before Elvis; before the Vietnam war came along.
Before The Beatles and "Yesterday",
When a man could still work, and still would.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?
Are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the Flag or the Liberty bell.
Wish a Ford and a Chevy,
Could still last ten years, like they should.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?
I wish coke was still cola,
And a joint was a bad place to be.
And it was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV.
Before microwave ovens,
When a girl could still cook and still would.
Stop rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell.
Stand up for the Flag and let's all ring the Liberty bell.
Let's make a Ford and a Chevy,
Still last ten years, like they should.
The best of the free life is still yet to come,
The good times ain't over for good.
Seemed like a good time to play some Hag....

That's how we do it here...In our county there are 3 major towns...by major I mean more than 10,000 folks. :)...The way it usually works here is Anniston has it's display on Friday, Oxford on Saturday, Jacksonville on Sunday, this all the week before the 4th...Since the 4th falls on the weekend this year Anniston's will be this Friday, and so on.
Doesn't really matter to me...Oxford always has the best display, but my beer drinking and BBQing is always on Independence Day.

We have a big fireworks display on the lake every year. Well, we have about three lakes in the area and all of them have a big to do. And yes, it's on the 4th.

The towns in our area will have 4th of July fireworks starting as early as tonight and running through Monday.
It is strange, but it's all about trying not to compete and people traveling.

IMHO, your town's idea makes sense EXCEPT when the 4th falls on a Friday, Saturday (this year) or Sunday. Why? If the 4th is on a Monday (for example), everybody needs to go back to work on Tuesday. Fireworks, especially if there is traffic, can make that almost impossible.

Why do cities do this?
It might have something to do with their ability to book (or inability to book) a professional crew to set off the fireworks on the 4th. Who knows, maybe the officials procrastinate contracting a company to do it early enough so the city has to settle for when they are available.
Here the fireworks are done at a football stadium and usually several big name performers are booked to perform as well. Sean has MC-ed the event a couple of times, last year it was Glen Beck. I think he is MC-ing again this year. But when the 4th lands on a Sunday they shift the show to Saturday evening on the 3rd. Because of the size of the stadium show some of the smaller communities in the valley that still do a show shift their show to the night before or the night after.
Since fireworks are legal here I'm considering just staying home this year, having a nice Bar-B-Que, and lighting my own off in the street for the kids.v

Knowing these inbred penny pinching jerks I would more likely believe that they contract for a discounted day the fireworks company hasn't been able to book.

You know I might agree with that except for the numbers.
We just don't have the numbers.
The entire county only has a little over 36 thousand residents, and the total number of jobs is just a little over 12 thousand for the entire county, my town only has 3400 residents by itself.
The lake and town on summer weekends easily handles 40 thousand visitors and the traffic or more.
I think it is money.

Its the money. How many safety personnel, i.e. police, firefighters, rescue squad...are getting paid double or double time & a half, plus overtime, to work a holiday?
The donations from parking/cars may cover a chunk of the display & the insurance for it...but add in tens of thousands of dollars in OT...
