I found this on another forum, and would like to see more discussion on it, plus I think monkeys are cute. They're not my ancestors but they are cute. What do you make of it?
Great apes laugh like humans when they are tickled, claim scientists, in a study that suggests the origins of laughter can be traced back more than 16 million years.

They sound nothing alike and the zoo officials were not laughing either when they caught me in the cage checking to see if this was true

You are correct, they aren't your ancestors. But their ancestors and your ancestors, specifically your mortal ancestors, are the same.
I'm wondering why this is in the Religion Forum?
Excellent question.

makes you wonder what evolutionary roles that laughter reaction played.
what's the benefit of laughing when tickled?

There must be other examples of common ancestry, where one species turns out to be almost infinitely more intelligent than the other. Right?

I'm not seeing it. Sorry.
Maybe evolution can't explain the tremendous gap in intelligence between animals and humans.

Ummm, yes it can actually....
The evolution of the human intelligence has provided us with a survival advantage - one that we couldn't achieve by mere physical strength, speed, etc....

And what explains the lack of a gap in the intelligence between animals and some humans?
Besides, I don't think you understand what I implied in my first post.

Of course there is difference of opinion as to which specie is infinitely more intelligent than the other.

seriously... how many times do you have to be told on this forum that evolution DOES NOT state that they are your ancestor... it states that you SHARE a common ancestor. are you purposely ignoring that? if so, why?

My point is that evolution can't explain WHY humans are the only ones to have such an advantage.
Don't you think it's just a little odd humans are so much more advanced? The closest thing to humans is what... feces chucking apes? Something isn't making sense here.

So what was the common ancestor?
You ever think that you've mistaken a common ancestor for... I dunno... a common creator?

Assume that chimps and humans have a common ancestor.
The chimp and the human may have differences in opinion which specie has the higher intelligence. (and there are individual cases where I would not take sides)

There were other species of humans (i.e. Neanderthal) that coexisted, but over time, some died, others mingled together forming new species.

Most recent evidence indicates the last 2 hominid species to co-exist were Neanderthal and Cro-magnum. (I think man or hominid would be correct than human assuming Homo-Sapian is the only human specie)
There is a question as to whether Neanderthal and Cro-magnum intermarried.
It is quite possible that Neanderthal had a greater intelligence but was at a physical disadvantage to Cro-magnum that caused them to be displaced by Cro-magnum(us)

You could ask the same question about why, say, the cheetah is so much faster than most other animals.
Fact is, its speed gives it a survival advantage.
Fact is, the development of hominid intelligence gives these primates a survival advantage.

We have ZERO evidence for a common creator.......!

Tread carefully there
Technically, Cro magnun was not a species. The Cro Magnuns were modern homo sapiens - same speceis as us. Cro magnun refers to the caves near modern day Les Eyszies (sp?) France where they dwelt and left their amazing rock art (BTW, if you are ever in the Les Eyszies area I highly recommend a visit, its well worth the time.
(I think man or hominid would be correct than human assuming Homo-Sapian is the only human specie)
I'm not sure that there is a convention there, but it seems to this observer that the emerging trend is to use "MAN" to refer to modern humans (homo sapiens sapines), while hominid refers man-like species such as Neanderthal, Homo-Habilis, Ergaster, Australopithecus, etc.

Assuming amino acids developed in a primoridal sea. There is evidence that amino acids and other organic compounds exist in deep space gas clouds.

Why would it be any kind of a nail?
Did you ever read Contact (or see the movie?). It wasn't a sci-fi story about aliens. It was a philosophical exploration of how people would react to contact with another advanced race. In the book, contact with the aliens provided validation for both sides that what they believed was correct, the religious saw affirmation of God, their God, not necessarily the one God, the athiests saw affirmation of the the lack of a God.

Young Earth creationism would probably lose some support. Assuming the aliens are older than us.

Now when I say aliens, I'm not talking microscopic life. I mean something like these guys:

That's the kind of alien I'm talking about. Not microscopic life or a flying spaghetti monster.

Most likely, if aliens were discovered, the religions would continue to exist for the most part, just change. Fundamentalist Christianity has certainly dropped since the evolution became accepted.

Leaving aside the fact that man IS an ape, I presume what you meant was that you can see large differences between man and the OTHER apes...yes?
Well, let's start of with the fact that the human genome is around 98% compatible with our closest hominid relative, the chimpanzee.
Do anything for you...?

Fundamentalist Christianity has certainly dropped since the evolution became accepted.
There are however many sects of Christianity for which evolution does not present any challenges, and some which even find evolution to be agreeable to some of their doctrines.

Yes, that was my point. As with evolution, if aliens were discovered, the literal interpretation would be mostly thrown out.

No. It is evidence of potential Common Ancestry though. Evidence of the Theory of Evolution would involve the distribution of alleles in a population based on selective pressures.
This is simply the presence of similar behavioral traits in two different species.
