I only got through once when he was local in NY and they made my call part of the commercial for his show.
The trick is you have to try to judge when a call will end and time your call to get through 7 seconds before you hear the current end on the radio.

Current end?
Yes, you have to get a sense for when the current call will end and hit dial so that you call goes through when the current call ends.
I got through to Rush once but the screener, not James, would not let me through.
I wanted to ask Rush "If Terri Shiavo were anything other than a white Christian woman; if she were a black female Muslim, if she was a Holocaust survivor, would she have been put to death like she was?"

It's luck or not. I've gotten through to radio stations a few times. I don't ever call in.
Actually, since we mention it, I have a 100% success rate.
Once accidentally got on Bill Press.

You could easily get through to an Air America show.
