I don't really care, but it is kind of interesting how this issue seems to be completely glossed over by the media.
Imagine if Bush were a smoker and had just put forward the same sweeping regulations of the industry?

I dont think it is glossed over, the President made his comments about trying to quit quite public, there is no story. Now if the President tried to make out he was a non smoker that would be different.

The anti-smoking campaign is fairly non-partisan, Cav. I know that the local ALA chapter head around these parts was a conservative Christian, for the longest time. In fact, typing only anecdotally - most of the anti-smoking crusaders I've met have been holiness and Nazarene type Christians.

I could be wrong, because I don't spend a lot of time in federal buildings...but isn't it just against the rules to smoke INSIDE them?
Obama can still light up in the Rose Garden, can't he?

Almost all Federal Buildings are now non smoking period.
The ones that have smoking areas now have a little fenced box or area the size of a jail cell off in one corner of the property way in hell removed from anything.
No I do not think he should smoke in the Rose Garden, hell that might effect the Rose's. Why should his smoking area be any more comfortable then what his soldiers have to live with? I could care less that he actually smokes, that might actuallly be the one thing I like about him. The entire smoking charade by the left though just ****es me off in general...what a crock of ****.

The only place troops get basically free reign to smoke is in a war zone...imagine that.
State side smoking areas are just exactly what I described.

Guys still smoke on military property, around here. They just "field dress" their cigarettes afterward. The ban inside buildings makes sense, all the same. As much as I think mary-jane should be legal - I also think a ban on it inside government buildings is completely non-invasive and surprisingly acceptable.

Reminds me of a political cartoon about 'Nam. It shows a grunt sitting at the bottom of a foxhole with bullets whizzing over his head. In the dialogue balloon, it shows what he's reading - the Surgeon's General brand new mandatory Warning on his pack of smokes.

He has discussed it publicly before, and one thing I don't think he needs to be accountable for his is success in quitting smoking.

Umm, do you know who the VP is? I'd say it's important if he is smoking, his chances of dying go way up and with Joe in the number two spot I find that increased risk too much to bear.
And had this been a conservative who smoked the press would have hammered it non-stop until people held their nose every time they saw a photo of the dirty smoker.

I know in Indiana it was the reps who got it done - led by various Church's backing.
Anyone interested in the historical debate and not dishonest liberal bashing should read: For Your Own Good: The Anti-Smoking Crusade and the Tyranny of Public Health (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684871157/theindepeende-20)
It goes into the current & historical facts of the crusade against smoking & the underlying issues it presents.

I agree that there is no story here, but if it had been Bush, that wouldn't matter to the press. I can even hear the questions in the press conference about how the President could support such changes when he himself is a smoker, moral equivilancy, do as I say-not as I do, etc. etc. We'd even see stories on the impact on children of the President's actions.
It would be on the front page.
Now with Obama, all he has to do is say he is "struggling" with it and there is a collective "oh, OK" from the media.

Good point about Biden! However, I doubt Obama has much chance to smoke. No one has pictures of him smoking (although if his lapdog media could get them, they'd probably not do so). So if he sneaks them, my guess is he is not smoking enough that it will threaten his remaining years as POTUS.
Wish you wouldn't have mentioned Biden - right behind him is Pelosi. What a downer!
