I don't know about a Mac... but windows will autostretch wallpaper images.

The native size of the one I sent was .. 1440px × 960px

There's an option to fit images to the screen in OS X change background.

I just happened to have Photoshop open. ;)

I think the clear visual of the "Shockwave" shows the Immense power these events give off...

The "shockwave" effect is likely simply the evaporation of the clouds by the hot air from the blast. i.e. It is the opposite effect of the condensation atop the ash column as it enters the very cold stratosphere.
