On the cash for klunkers program ... People are not getting a handout from the government. They are being allowed to keep up to $4500 of THEIR OWN MONEY! What's wrong with that?? I like anyone in government that allows me to keep more of my OWN money. What's not in line with conservative ideals here? The Republican scoundrels that had the reigns for the last 8 years wouldn't let me buy a car AND keep more of my own money while doing so. Heck, it's not just cars ... Obama is letting me keep $1500 more of my own money because I needed a new heat pump for my house. By opting for a high efficiency unit I qualify for a $1500 tax break due to legislation Obama enacted in February! So I am already $1500 to the good under Obama! And my roof needs new shingles in the Fall ... Another $1500! Need a new hot water heater? Go with high efficiency unit and get to keep more of your own money!

These liberals are more conservative than the Bush bunch EVER WAS!!

WHERE DO YOU THINK THAT $1500 COMES FROM! you say you get to keep your money, but do you really.

the taxpayers. Obama has no money of his own to give you.

I suggest reading up on taxes, the life and times of the government has no money without taxpayers.

so enjoy your new stuff, on the USA taxpayers.

geez, where did you go to school? oh that's right....

How many tax breaks until you start getting back more than you put in?

Yes.

Well, the money I am saving on my heat pump is a Tax Credit. Which means that's $1500 less I will have to pay in Federal Income Taxes next year.

I'm all about paying less in Federal taxes.

Thank you Obama!

How many tax breaks until you start getting back more than you put in?

That will never happen in my situation. I earn too much money.

Although, I suppose if I were too big to fail, like GM, AIG, Fannie, Freddie et. al. I might actually qualify for some bail out money!

As it stands, I'm satisfied with simply lowering my annual tax bill. Whodda thunk it would have to take electing liberals for me to catch a break ...

Hey Yeeha, I would NOT be counting those tax credits before tax day. You are basing your write offs based on the tax laws that barry inherited. I would not be one bit surprised if he doesn't have to change all of those nasty codes due to the mess that was left to him.

Their own money? Really? So you are saying this program only applies to those who actually pay taxes?

I don't think Liberals will ever figure out where Government hand outs come from, but I'll tell you one thing for certain... there is going to be a big demand for junkers just before this program goes into effect. ;)

Cash for Clunkers is a Social Engineering project designed to force people out of family cars, trucks, and SUV's, and into the 35 MPG microcars that the feds now demand from Ford (which is lobbying for $2/litre gas to ensure purchases of the Focus, Fiesta, and Ka) and Japan, Inc (which cheered the President's green car standards), plus Mercedes (home of the Smart).

Copy European Socialism is the philosophy of today's liberals. I didn't vote for any of them yet we're being treated to this ideal.

I heard Hannity say the same thing on the radio yesterday. Only problem with that notion is that in order to receive the rebate the clunker has to have been owned and registered for at least the one year prior to the trade in.

Also, I really don't see the incentive for dealers to take these transaction, because there is no trade in value for the clunkers. By the letter of the law the clunkers have to be destroyed. The dealers are just being used as garbage men to clean up the streets. I highly doubt this program will be very successful.

So even though this program has seen auto sales boosted in other countries it will fail in the US?

Yes heaven forbid a young car enthusiast take one of these so called "clunkers" and learn to restore it to it's original beauty.

NO. WE. MUST. DESTROY.

Hope Jay Leno knows what a bad person he is since he owns many old evil cars.

Cars that are even ten years old now often need a computer to fix them. Many areas now also do not allow for people to work on their cars in the neighbourhood.

Countries that have already adopted this have seen anywhere from a 10-50 percent jump in car sales, thus keeping people working and feeding the economy

In the USA (as it is NOW) Americans CAN work on their own cars in their driveways. And fixing up old cars DOES keep places like Schuck's, Kragen, and Pep Boys up and running as people buy parts and do the repairs.

Not everywhere, certain towns have bylaws and there are also neighbourhood associations in other places

The law does not keep a person from restoring a car if they wish too, but if that is not you thing this would be a good time to replace a car. But in the end the main purpose of this bill is to keep the auto industry going and all that is associated with auto manufacturing. It is too bad they did the bailouts instead of doing this first with either a larger incentive or combo of tax cuts and incentives like China did

Lets look at what the 'Cash for Clunkers' really entails at this point shall we?

http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/?gclid=CJybisilmZsCFRFWagod_B7Bpg

From the above site:

Senators Harry Reid, Dick Durbin and Debbie Stabenow spoke on behalf of the Cash for Clunkers Bill. Republican Senators tried to cut the measure from the Wartime Spending Bill but they were NOT successful. Cash for Clunkers program will stay as part of the wartime spending bill.

Green Light for Cash For Clunkers – The wartime spending bill will go to President to Sign.

According to one version, consumers would have to trade in cars and trucks for a new fuel-efficient vehicle that delivers additional fuel savings of between 2 and 10 miles per gallon, depending on the type of vehicle purchased. According to a recent Edmunds.com article this table will aide consumers in knowing what cars would qualify for the program.

Alright...lets break it down. You have a mini van..it's 5 to 8 years old. It gets about 18 in city and 20 or so on highway. As the registered owner of the vehicle you can now ask /request a voucher from the government to go out and purchase any car..not just micro cars...not just new cars...but any car...and that new/new used car must exceed 2 miles more per gallon and up from our old car.

With that scenerio laid out..and it will be the majority scenario's in America..how is this doing anything for the economy? The government is going to 'pay' or give an incentive to take on new debt? That doesn't make any sense in this day in age of economic upheaval to take on new debt for any household..even if it is to prop up the auto industry. Income requirements? There aren't any...so poor and wealthy alike can take advantage of the open Obama piggy bank.

Many have touted this bill as a way to begin implementing a standardized national higher EPA/emission standards. The way the bill currently reads..you can buy a two year old hummer as long as it gets 2 more miles to 10 miles more per gallon then the current car your driving. Make any sense on fuel standards when it's a gas guzzling pig of a car? Hmmmmm. ? The bill , also as it reads currently, does nothing for the glut of cars that need to be moved by Ford, Gm etc. in order to prop up our failing auto industry.

This is smoke and mirrors folks...plan and simple. It's a sophomoric macro economics scheme that will fall flat on it's face in the first quarters of it's conception and implementation.

One last thought...why is this put into a War Time spending Bill? Is congress so lazy that it can't create stand on it's own legislation for this specific program?...or where they hoping to hide the legislation within a larger bill praying no one would notice?

Take you car in lately. when I do they hook it up to a computer

Seeing as it is usually citizens who go to town meetings to move for these bylaws because there are tired of seeing people's car in pieces all over the front yard while they are being worked on, it should be those people who you complain about.

They put this in a wartime spending bill to push the agenda through this bill. Remember two years ago one of the economy-killers, the minimum wage hikes, were pushed through a wartime spending bill.

Just got a call from my sister (an avid leftie in San Fran). She says we must get rid of our office trucks so she can buy herself a tiny car. Says it qualifies, and she'll even use every number crunching and emotional aspect (the truck is a half MPG too much to qualify) that she will do anything to take our truck and give it to the feds for crushing.

Liberals have no logic. I'm a taxpayer and I'm not happy this "cash for clunkers" is using MY money to let get people into microcars. How can you do business in one?
