June 17 (Bloomberg) -- It’s a plot better suited for a John Le Carre (http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=John%0ALe+Carre&site=wnews&client=wnews&proxystylesheet=wnews&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&filter=p&getfields=wnnis&sort=date:D:S:d1) novel.
Two Japanese men are detained in Italy after allegedly attempting to take $134 billion worth of U.S. bonds over the border into Switzerland. Details are maddeningly sketchy, so naturally the global rumor mill is kicking into high gear.
Let’s assume for a moment that these U.S. bonds are real. That would make a mockery of Japanese Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano (http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Kaoru%0AYosano&site=wnews&client=wnews&proxystylesheet=wnews&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&filter=p&getfields=wnnis&sort=date:D:S:d1)’s “absolutely unshakable” confidence in the credibility of the U.S. dollar. Yosano would have some explaining to do about Japan’s $686 billion of U.S. debt if more of these suitcase capers come to light.

...

It would be terrible news for the White House. Other than the U.S., China or Japan, no other nation could theoretically move those amounts. In the absence of clear explanations coming from the Treasury, conspiracy theories are filling the void. Very interesting if the bonds are legit.

Can you blame them...
I dump US securities too..
As long as the US continues to try to print
their way out of this recession look for more of this kind of stuff to happen...
Get your money now while it is actually worth something...

Either way... as Glenn pointed out... it is not good. And either way, a government must be behind it. If they are real, there are only four countries that own more value in US bonds than the amount confiscated; if they are fake, it could be one of any number of countries... but North Korea is a prime suspect.
