View Full Version : Toledo... ticketing people for parking in their own driveways.

I guess it's illegal in Toledo for people to have unpaved driveways and actually park in them????? Sounds to me like the city is just looking for a way to get more money.

----------------------------------------
Although not outlined in the city charter, a city memo has allowed workers with the city of Toledo’s Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor to issue parking citations to citizens.

It was learned over the weekend that Susan Frederick, acting commissioner with streets, bridges and harbor, fined several motorists for parking in their driveways on Holland-Sylvania near Dorr Street.

"I've lived here 43 years and last Thursday we had our 44th wedding anniversary," said Charles Robertson, who received a parking violation. "I got a present from the city. Isn't that nice?"

Residents' vehicles were parked on a turn-around portion of their driveway in front of their property, something they need to safely get out of their drive on Holland-Sylvania, which, at times, can be busy.

Megan Robson, spokesperson for Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, released a statement to the media Monday evening.

Thank God I don't live there!! Does anyone in Toledo not have anything better to do?

From the text of the article sounds like some neighbors did not want illegally parked vehicles on their street. The city issued fines and now the ticketed folks are ticked off, just like the folks on the television show "Parking Wars".

My driveway isn't paved either!! Luckily our town isn't that stupid. I guess that's one of the advantages of living in the country on the outskirts of town.

Technically, I live in the Burbs. Reality, I live within 5 miles of a half dozen horse farms, an egg farm, and many many acres of crops. I wouldn't move any closer to the city. Just not my style.

This is what happens when a town grows up around people who were essentially in undeveloped areas and the new people and businesses that have come in want the old original dwellers to come into alignment with them.

Like it or not they aren't living in the country anymore.

Should their gravel driveways be grandfathered?

Should the new people not then be allowed to park on their yard off the pavement without ticketing if the need arises?

This not just a case of "stupid officials" or "a money grab", it is growing pains and it is always going to look like the little guy is getting picked on when rules get enforced that weren't enforced before.

I love your area, you don't have to go very far from the towns and city (Buffalo) to be in the "country". I also believe you have the best fishing in the country in western NY. I have fished Lake Erie, Niagara river and Lake Ontario all in the same day. I did get a ticket in the Town of Tonawanda while in my driveway before though, but it was for not having a registration sticker on my windshield.

Any officer who would actually write such a ticket needs <Snipped>.

Great bass, trout, pike, salmon fishing. Lakes creeks rivers and ponds. If it weren't for the weather, which really isn't so bad, and the taxes, it would be perfect. Tonawanda cops will get you every time. :))

Well put, but I think there is still a revenue stream issue here. Living in a transitional community, there is often conflict between old timers and new guys. Our town made a master plan in 05. It changes constantly. Right now there is an issue with a grocery store chain needing a bigger store and wanted to relocate where they'd have to rezone property. Constant conflict between growth and town character.

Did anyone read the linked story about the policy change and the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association President statement?

This article was linked within the orignal:

City workers to issue tickets? (http://www.foxtoledo.com/dpp/news/local/wupw_City_workers_to_issue_tickets_061209)

But he had other advice if you spot a person in plain clothes leaving a citation on your property.

“If you see someone on your property without a uniform who's writing a parking tag, he's impersonating a police officer,” he said. “And because we're so short, use the proper force necessary to detain that person until a police crew can respond.”

Will the city go in and give these people another ticket in the near future? I once got two speeding tickets in one week(guilty as charged).:naughty: Can the city just keep going back and giving ticket after ticket until they pave their driveway? Also could these residents get a bag of concrete and just slop a rectangle of concrete right on the ground just big enough for their car? But then maybe they would need a building permit to do even that. That's one of the reasons that I live back a long lane, almost a mile long. No neighbors, no elected officials and no noise. Our lane and the area in front of the house and barn is paved. But my husband parks his truck beside the barn in the gravel. Oh no! I'd better watch out for the parking police. They would be greeted by four large dogs and one that bites tires.(we've had to purchase about ahalf dozen new tires for people).

Are these police officers giving these tickets out, or the govt agency responsible for this sort of thing?

After a resident called to complain about illegally parked cars Frederick responded and found violations and left citations, while in the neighborhood another resident asked her to come down his street and there she issued more.

It was learned over the weekend that Susan Frederick, acting commissioner with streets, bridges and harbor, fined several motorists for parking in their driveways on Holland-Sylvania near Dorr Street.

Now the police union is threatening to take legal action against Frederick and the city because they say Frederick is not authorized to give tickets and only the police should be doing that.

No kidding. Someone neighbor called and complained about the way their neighbors were parking on their own property?

I've had neighbors like that. We have about a 500 gallon pond in our back yard. The idiot next door said that the pond is a flood hazard... that this flood hazard brought down the value of her house. She called the police and the city over and over about this. On several occasions she and her daughter would sneak into our yard when we were not here and empty our pond. They killed hundreds of dollars worth of fancy gold fish and koy.

Just about every neighborhood has a nut causing problems for everyone.

What a bitch (not you BTW, your nut case neighbor). I don't think I could stand living next to someone like that. I would have bought a cheap game camera and installed it aimed toward the pond and got her vandalism on film for the world and the police to see.

People who do that kind of **** **** me off. They have no idea how hard someone has worked for something or how long they may have had to save to make it happen.
