I think you'll find that the City of Champions is Manchester, until last month Manchester United were Champions of England, Champions of Europe and as of November Champions of the World...
But we lost in Rome and now Barcelona are Champions of Europe..........:(...........

In the other thread you said you were in Oklahoma up till at least 06. If you're not from the burgh, they aren't really your team. Your team is the 89ers errr Redhawks. Enjoy triple A baseball.

I finished my military career in OK.
I am originally from Pgh(South Hills area). I came back to Pgh, because there is no place like it. I've been stationed all over the U.S. and nothing like the Burgh. Also got tired of paying $300 for Sunday Ticket. Now I get to be among my fellow Yinz instead of Yall.

I'm hoping that the fact that Mario was one of the greatest players ever, won two Cups, got cancer and retired, came back, then helped buy the Pens out of bankruptcy, returned as an owner/player, then won a third Cup as an owner will end the Mario/Gretzky debate forever.

Gretzky #1 Mario #2 on the ice. I might even put Orr there. Just look at the numbers. Mario has been your best ambassador. He was amazing. But Gretzky, with all his post career foibles, is the best.

And at least he wouldn't have given Paris Hilton a 2nd look, he dated a few Miss Worlds, he had class.......
When I first went to Old Trafford as a 12 year old, George Best was playing although he looked a bit overweight, do you know his age when he last played for United?...
He was only 27, I remember being a paperboy and putting all the papers in my bag. The front page, the back page and nearly every page in the middle was full of the biggest sports story ever...
Of course he went to America and ended up at Fulham but his best days were at United......

Never saw him play live, before my time, but have seen video and read about him. Great player. He'd beat you on the field, beat you at the bar (for which he payed the price, right?) then beat up a cop for good measure.:))

Yeah...you don't live just outside Philly...where we might well have the largest population of front-runners in the entire country (believe me...for every Philly team hat/shirt, I see Steelers/Cowboys/Yankees/Celtics/Lakers gear to match it).
And don't even get me started on some of the *********s I share fandom of the Phils/Eagles/Flyers/Sixers with. If I had a nickel for every idiot I had to convince that McNabb is the best QB we've ever had here, I wouldn't have to work 60 hours a week.

Yeah.
Gretzky is still the greatest player ever...duh.
Say what you will about Lemieux's talent, and being a Flyers fan I have seen it first-hand enough so I don't need any reminders, the simple fact that he did have to stop playing and that he wasn't able to continue his career because of injury leaves the "greatest player ever" debate to one player...Wayne Gretzky. Period.
I, and many others, wish that Mario had been able to play as long as Gretzky to see if they'd have compiled similar numbers. But he didn't. As I've pointed out before...Gretzky has more assists in his career than anyone else has total points. He scored 212 points (including 92 goals) in one season.
Put it this way: On those Oilers teams, you know...the ones that won five Cups in seven years...he was far and away their best player. It wasn't even close, and there were Hall of Famers (Kurri, Messier, etc) on that team.
Lemieux has definitely had the better of it as was as post-career, but let's end it there.

Some people seem to forget, he was on pace to crush Gretzky's numbers when he was forced to reitre. Numbers aren't everything, just watch highlights of Mario and compare to Getzky's. No comparison....Mario had the better skills.

You can't forget something that never happened. Gretzky had 4 count em 4 200 + point seasons. How many did Mario have? Oh yeah, NONE! Count cups, count points per game, count any stat category and Gretzky is #1 over Mario. Seriously, he trails Gretzky by 1100 points. I am a Sabres fan, I am objective. You guys are being homers. Next you'll tell me Samuelsson was a better defenseman than Bobby Orr.

Just to add Hart Trophy wins 8 in a row. 8. 9 in 10 years. The only player to take him in those ten years, Mario, who needed his best season ever to do it. Gretzky hands down.

Numbers definitely aren't everything.
However, some ARE important.
For example...Stanley Cups- Gretzky 5, Lemieux 2
Art Ross Trophies- Gretzky 9 (including 7 straight), Lemieux 6
Hart Trophies- Gretzky 9, Lemieux 3
And to really put things in perspective...above I pointed out that Gretzky's career assist total would lead the NHL in career scoring (1963...Messier is 2nd with 1887 total points). Gretzky also had four SEASONS where his assist total alone would have led the NHL in scoring (one tie), and at least five others where his assist total alone was in the top 5 overall scorers in the NHL.
Put it this way...how many of the 80's Oilers' Hall of Famers would have been there without Gretzky? Messier probably would have had success anywhere. Fuhr? I don't know. One Vezina Trophy (with a 3.43 GAA...boy have times changed)...career save % under 90%. Anderson? Hell no. Kurri? Hell no. Coffey? Possibly...though I wonder how many of his assists were made possible by extra room given because of Gretzky.
Lemieux was an amazingly talented player. Probably the most talented we've ever seen, and possibly the most talented we'll ever see.
Then again...Gale Sayers was the most talented RB a lot of people saw too, and I never see his name listed as "greatest NFL RB".
And I'll also point out that I have no love for the guy...he took two of his Cups off the Flyers, including one against one of the best losing-effort goaltending performances of all time (Hextall actually won the Conn Smythe in '87 despite losing).

Go to Ontario, where Gretzky was born, and see just how much they've honored him and how many streets, complexes, etc. are named after him.
Mario is from Quebec, that's why he's being knighted by Quebec.

Baloney. There's no birthright to a sports team. If you cheer for a team year-in and year-out, then they're your team. No matter where you were born, were raised, or currently live.
If you're talking just about bandwagon fans, then fine. I'll agree. Otherwise, loyal fans are loyal fans wherever they may be found.
