I just installed Ubuntu running as a dual boot with Vista. Installation was very fast and smooth. Do I need to have adware programs and anti-virus programs on the Ubuntu, such as Webroot etc., like I have on Vista?

I have my questions answered looking at some of the forums.

How do you like the OS?

I like it. It is very stream-lined and much more efficient than Vista, in my opinion. I am seriously considering wiping the HD clean, and just running Ubuntu on this laptop.

Only problems I've run into is driver support, and software. I still run XP but I also have Ubuntu installed on the same partition (yes, the same partition).
There was a time when I was trying to recover files from my second hard drive. No matter what I tried, XP couldn't view the files (there was a mishap before this involving merging of drives ). Ubuntu had no problems viewing it. I just booted into Ubuntu and burned my files to a DVD. Problem solved.

Not really.
There are so few viruses and malware made for Linux.
Also Linux is much more naturally secure than Windows. Although, Vista and 7 are getting better with UAC.

Can't run Photoshop in Ubuntu though  Will be nice not to have to worry about all that crap along with an OS running like it should to begin with.

Can you run Windows apps in Ubuntu?
If you have WINE, you can run most applications without issue.
Some applications actually run better under WINE than in their native environment.

I want to wipe the HD clean and do a clean install of Ubuntu. What is the best way to go about that, seeing how I have a dual boot running? Does the HD need to be formatted a special way?

Download Ultimate Boot Disk for Linux and find FDISK (I forget the specific menu option) and delete all your partitions with it.
Reboot with the Ubuntu installer disk and tell it to use your entire disk for the install.

Ultimate Boot CD is a very handy tool to keep around.
The is one for Windows out there as well but it requires a bit of work to make it since they cannot publish the Windows components with the tools.

Try GIMP
GIMP is awesome, and at a fraction of the disk space.

I will check it out.
The drive has been reformatted and Ubuntu is the only OS on this laptop. All is running well.
Thanks to all for the help.

I'm running CS4 (and have run previous versions) in WINE. Std install and works fine.

I will give it a try. Have you noticed whether it runs better in Linux versus Windows?

I'm pretty sure the Ubuntu CD can format your HD for you and get rid of Windows.

I found gparted on the live cd last night. Used it and all went well. Going to make a cd from the site Hoobee suggested as well. It has a lot of good apps.

It takes under 30 seconds to boot up the computer and log in. I recommend Ubuntu to those Windows users who are tired of Windows but have felt trapped. Download the live-cd version and run Ubuntu off the cd, and take a look at what Ubuntu has to offer.

I've not really noticed much difference - It works well in both.

Do you have CS4 loaded, or CS4 Extended? In searching the forums, it appears that getting it to work in Linux without any problems is a true shot in the dark. From what I have read, there hasn't been much success at all.

You do not need to have adaware programs on your Linux OS. The reason why there are adaware apps for linux is to protect non-Linux computers. Linux does not have the security issues that Windows and Macintosh's have (until Mac's copied the Linux OS.)

I found out that great news last night, when I was researching online. I also found out that I don't have to worry about disk defragmentation anymore.
I installed Banchee a few minutes ago. Took me a few tries before I got it right. Good ole learning curve. lol
