View Full Version : You've got 30,000 bucks... Which modern sports car would you buy?

If you had about 30,000 dollars, which modern sports car/coupe would you buy? My choices would be...

1. Nissan 370Z: The Z is, in many ways, the best sports car ever made. The nameplate's rich history is rivaled only by cars like the Chevy Corvette, the Porsche 911, or the BMW M3. It has, for it's entire history, offered heart stopping performance in line with a Corvette or a 911 at a fraction of the cost. From 240Z till the new 370Z, the Fairlady (it's Japanese name) is easily the one to beat. For 30 grand, this thing is a steal; 320+ horsepower from a 3.7L V6, race inspired suspension, attractive, retro exterior and a decently luxurious interior. It's the performance that matters with this car; it achieve a .99g on the skid, which was once the real of multi-hundred thousand dollar super cars.

2. Chevrolet Camaro V6 LT2: It may not be as quick or have the gravity defying manueverability of the Z, but the Camaro V6 is an American take on the classic Japanese style of design. Highly engineered and using a relatively small displacement DOHC engine with a independent rear suspension, this beast has nothing in common with the old American muscle car it shares it's name with, and that's frankly for the best. Well balanced, strong performance, and a gorgeous exterior, the new Camaro V6 is a beast.

3. BMW 128i: The slowest of my choices, but the one with the most luxury and refinement. It may not be nearly as quick in the straights as the Camaro or the rediculous 370Z, but it can keep up in the corners and offers that BMW refinement that the others can't match.

4. Mustang GT: Not a Mustang fan, but I understand a good value when I see it. A voracious 4.6L SOHC V8 pumps out a rather underwhelming 315 horsepower, but it has a great 325 ft. lb of low end torque that pushes this 'stang off the line faster than any other of my choices. It's a shame that the V6 model is so terrible. The GT, despite the limitations (live-axle, underwhelming high end power, etc) is a great choice. It's also rediculous off the line; 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. Much quicker than the Camaro or the Bimmer (which have 6+ 0-60 times) and still beats the Z (0-60 in 5.1 seconds) the only problem is handling, where it falters behind the others. Especially the rediculous Z.

If it can be purchased (new) for $30,000, it is not on my list.

That said, I like all of the cars in the OP... to which I would add the new (retro) Dodge Charger and the Chrysler Crossfire... assuming of course, they can be had for under $30k.

I have a subaru. 2005 with catback borla custom exhaust, awd, its sweet.

Being in NY, I need something nice, quick, and something that could get me through the winter.

No brainer. I paid just over 30,000 for it fully loaded.

I bought it new, had it for quite a few years now, very reliable.

Well, I fall back on my statement that no car under $30k would show up on my list of favorite sports cars, including loaded models of the ones listed in the OP... I think the OP needs to change that to at least $50k... preferably $100k. ;)

Last month my family met in Delaware for a wedding. My uncle drives a late model Corvette. His tire got gashed on the interstate somewhere and cost him over $500 for a new one. Hell, I thought $216 for a new tire for the wife's VW Beetle was bad enough.

I used to own a '70 Camaro (damn, I wish I had not sold that car...) and think Chevy did a pretty good job with the retro '68. But I think both Ford and Dodge did a better job styling wise with their retro Mustang and Charger.

As far as the new Dodge Chargers, the GA State Patrol is buying them exclusively now for highway patrol, as are a lot the Traffic units in the local metro area, over the Crown Vics that are ubiquitous in GA law enforcement. Cobb County used to buy Camaros for their traffic units, but I think they're reconsidering.

The Avalanche is a good truck. It's very unique, which is why it's a good truck.

The only trucks that are/were similar is the Honda Ridgeline, which doesn't have the pullin' power, and the ol' Subaru Baja, which offered excellent fuel economy and had the handling of an AWD sports sedan, but could tow crap.

I've thought about buying a 2003-2005 Avalanche when I get out of college. I'd buy it over a Silverado or a Sierra; they tow more, but I only tow 4-wheelers and the occational trailers that weigh only 4000 pounds.

If I don't get that, I'll get another Frontier. That's a great truck; it's been to hell and back and it's still runnin strong. I'm going to try to get a 2006 Nismo Off-Road Frontier; 10.1 inches of ground clearance.

The Thunderbird 2-Seaters were a beaut. The late 60 eras were pretty, too. But don't underestimate the 90s era T-Birds. Those were some seriously quick and nice cars for their day. Had an independent rear suspension with RWD, which was a rarity in the early 90s for an American vehicle. Most American vehicles with RWD had a live axle at that time.

Too bad the final generation was so disappointing. Looked nice on the outside, but it was slow and had a crap interior compared to a BMW Z3 or Z4.

Why not purchase a 2005 or 2006 Pontiac GTO? They have the LS2 V-8 putting out 400 hp and 400 lb-ft torque. The automatics can do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, and the manuals in 4.7. The 1/4 time is in the low to mid 13's, and they only cost around $20,000 now.

As for the OP...already had a Camaro....traded it in for an SUV about 2 years ago.....and I would not choose the other options...I would just save up some more money and get a Caddy.

The Camaro in the OP is NOT what you had two years ago...

You did the right thing Samm, if everyone that owned a GM product would have done that years ago, there would not be a problem with junk on the road...:))

If everyone who owned a GM product would have sold their old car and bought a new GM product, only GM products would be on the road. More "classic" GM muscle cars are still running (and running well) than the junk that Ford put out in the 60s.

No argument. There is only one true late 60's muscle car....

If it was not built by MOPAR, then it just did not hit the mark...

Or you could get a Challenger R/T, they're pretty sweeeeeeeet.

The challenger is a sweet ride, it'd be between that or the camaro. Don't really care for the stangs much.

MOPARs were fast (in a straight line)... and for the most part great looking, but their chassis were junk. GM built a much better, more reliable product.

just $30,000 not much of a spors car for that, id either use that money and the money I would get selling my current cadillac cts-v, for a new 2009 cts-v, or buy a nother used cts-v same as mine but in black, and use the little bit left over for some modifications for that and my transam.

It's also what killed the air-cooled Boxer engines of Volkswagen and Porsche.

Well, partially with Porsche. The reason they went to liquid cooled motors was increased performance possibilities; but the rediculous environmental laws in the US were certainly an influence with killing off one of the best engines ever made.

My favorite motors:

1. Porsche Boxer 6-Cylinder Air-Cooled
2. BMW Inline-6
3. Chevrolet Small Block V8 (particularly the 350ci)
4. Nissan VG30TT DOHC (the engine that powered the Z32 Fairlady Z Turbo, known to Americans as the 300ZX Turbo)
5. Nissan VQ series motor (thing won Ward's Best engine for 10 years straight)

Challengers are definately pretty.

But they're the slowest out of the three Ponies. The Camaro is the fastest; 0-60 in 4.6 second, the 'stang is second at 4.9. Challenger RTs are around 5.3 or so.

Define "modern"

http://www.4101rvworld.com/images/57tbird/57tbird.jpg

Style over horsepower.

That 1957 T-Bird is my all time favorite car, but since the OP said "modern", I'll choose the Pontiac Solstice.

Nice car, but in no size, shape or form does it qualify as a sports car and it is a damn sight more expensive than $30,000. Try again... ;)

The Solstice has looks, but they lack performance, except for the top level GXP trim. That thing is ridiculous in the straight-line.

I'm more of a Miata fan myself. My favorite little roadster, though, is the 2000 through 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyders.

Yeah, I was basing my choice purely on aesthetics. Nothing a supercharger wouldn't fix.

I've always wanted to get a 1990-94 Nissan 300ZX TT and rebuild it. Upgrade the engine, swap out the rear suspension, just rebuild it from the ground up and turn it into a 700 hp monster that can outdrag any of the local muscle rebuilds.

Nothing like the sound of a twin-turbo V6 lol.

I've always liked those. A couple of friends had them growing up, fun little rides. I was reading some magazine where they built the hell out of the bottom end of a supra engine and pushed enough turbo to it to crank out 1000 hp. Scary:eek: cause that's a little car.

The first car I bought was a '75 280Z. The 75 was the last Z car to not be saddled with the emissions control hardware, which in the 70s didn't work all that well and just robbed you of power and economy.

That car was some serious fun.

already am getting my sports car. Going to cost more than 30k, but that is because of the options.

09 Platinum Grey Nissan 370z.
Changed out the Nav for an aftermarket and put in a new exhaust so far.
