I'm Scotch-Irish. I can't help it. I was outside for 4 hours last Thursday, and this sunburn is just awful.

I did okay putting some vaseline on it. I have an aloe plant, too, that has been helping.

But my dumb ass just decided to put mentholated Vicks on it.

DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR SUNBURN!

Why on God's green Earth would you think that was a good idea. That stuff burns your nose just smelling it. :))

My daughter hates me when I use it on her.

Go take a shower, quick!! :)

Have you tried tea? Supposedly this works but I've never tried it. I burn very easily and rarely go out without slopping on a bunch of sunscreen and I have been pretty lucky and not burned for years. Now that I've said that I'll probably forget tomorrow and go out without sunblock and burn like the dickens.

Believe it or not I was told to put good old prep. H on sunburns. Sounds better than vicks.
I was also told by my Dr. to put Prep. H on scars that they will soften up and
eventfully go away. I tried this on one I had on my noise now you could hardly see the scar.

I was doing some looking around just now, and that was one of the commercial products they said to use.

Apparently it works.

It works. Tea Bags soaked in ice water and then dabbed on the sunburnt areas,

Works wonders.

btw:

Don't make the same mistake twice.

After you've gotten burned, it takes three to six months for your skin to return to normal, says Dr. Schreiber. "When you get a sunburn and the top layer of skin peels off, the newly exposed skin is more sensitive than ever. That means you'll burn even faster than you did before if you're not careful."

Take a lesson from this redheaded Scot, VINEGAR is the answer to your sunburn.

As soon as you know you're sunburned, take Ibuprofen to help reduce the inflammation. Then soak washcloths or kitchen towels in apple cider vinegar with a little cool water. Wring them out and lay them on the sunburned areas. Keep re-dipping in vinegar and re-applying as the cloths dry out. The vinegar takes the "heat" out of the burn, it helps remove the soreness and will prevent peeling.

I've got 54 year of sunburns under my belt and I've tried it ALL. My son is also a redhead so this method is proven by two generations!

BTW, SPF70 is your best friend, along with wearing a white t-shirt and hat between the hours of 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Buy a new bottle of sunscreen every year as it becomes less effective as it gets older.

I have aloe lotion that I use when I get burnt, and it works great.

this first generation Irish girl agrees with the Scot! - vinegar is the way to go - all I have to do is think about the sun and I get a burn - Ibuprofern and vinegar is the way to go - feel better soon -

I always buy either the green or blue Banana Boat gel...and put it in the fridge. Not only is it extremely soothing, but it prevents peeling.

Vinegar works like a charm.

I put on the sun screen 30 minutes before going out for a swim. It gives the sunscreen a chance to sink into the skin and work more effectively.

Good advice about rotating the sunscreen out every year. I was unaware that it lost potency as it aged in the medicine cabinet.

Yeah... the dolt! Everyone knows you should use Ben Gay, not Vicks. :snooty:

Old home remedies of tea and vinegar aside, NascarGirl2448 is correct... aloe vera is the most proven "natural" remedy for sunburn. If you can find an aloe lotion with vitamin E in it, that works best.

:)) :))

Thanks guys. I will try these tips this week when I have to be outside.

And yeah, it's turned into a thick, deeply wrinkled patch of brown...I wouldn't even call it skin.

Lesson learned. :shifty:

When I have to start an IV on someone who's spent their life either working or playing outdoors, it's like trying to stick the needle through tough, old leather. I've actually had it 'bounce off', the skin was so tough.

I was sunburnt bad about 5 years ago, hot burn turned real itchy, got desperate and had nothing else to put on it. Sprayed Pam on my back, horrible idea. Turned the itch into a raging burning itchy mess!

Figured it'd put some greese on the itch and give me some relief....boy was I wrong. My best friend back in high school was headed to the beach and wanted to get a really good tan.

So she slathered herself in crisco shortening. Yeah. You read that right. Her reasoning was since it does such a good job frying chicken...

She found out why it does so well; SHE was fried too.

That happened to me a couple of years ago...it was unbearable because the itching was almost an internal thing. The only thing that relaxed me at all was dousing myself in buttermilk.

Worst experiece I have had...and that comes from someone who has had sun poisoning about 7 times.
