View Full Version : The Disney Renaissance (1989-1999)

I'm 18, so I was lucky to grow up during what has since been called the "Renaissance" of Disney. From the late '70s to the late '80s, Disney hit a rut, both in the quality of and critical reception to their animated films, but starting with the release of the Little Mermaid in 1989, at it's height in 1994 with the release of the Lion King and ending with Tarzan in 1999, Disney produced around 10 or so animated features back to back which rank up with their best ever; After 1999, the quality of their films began to slide again and (IMO) hasn't recovered since.
So if anyone, young or old, wants to fondly remember the Disney Renaissance, post here.
Disney Renaissance films:
The Little Mermaid- 1989
Rescuers Down Under- 1990
Beauty and the Beast- 1991
Aladdin- 1992
The Lion King- 1994--Highest grossing picture of 1994
Pocahantas- 1995
The Hunchback of Notre Dame--1996
Hercules--1997
Mulan--1998
Tarzan--1999

Hard to focus on that time period, considering that I was born in 1961 and was born about 1 1/2 hr drive from Anaheim! LOL
I've got pictures that my mother took of the Matterhorn being built, if that gives you a clue.
I remember parking right near the orignal front gates, walking in for FREE and buying books of tickets for five bucks.
Damn, I'm old!
(Great Moments with Mr Lincoln was an "A" ticket and the Matterhorn was an "E".)

Eh, there were a couple of good 80s Disney movies like ...
The Fox and the Hound
Black Cauldron
But I guess I'm biased seeing as how that was my childhood decade.
May not have the cool Disney movies but we rocked it hard with Transformers and Nintendo ! lol

As a parent whose kids were growing up in that period, I saw most of those movies REPEATEDLY, ad naseum. I hear the theme to "The Lion King" or "Beauty and The Beast" and I have the urge to head for the range and alleviate "stress". I have truly come to despise those movies due to shear repeatition. The only exception is "Aladdin", probably due to Robin Williams.

I am 30, so I was enjoying the peak of the Renaissance.
LOVE Disney......and my faves are Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid.
Of course I am also a huge fan of Classic Disney....oh hell, I love most Disney!
Although...I never liked Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Mulan.
And seriously.....I really wish they would release The Song of the South on DVD......

There is a certain point where your brain turns off. Where you just can't stand it one more minute. I reached it a few years ago.
Turns out, there are worse things than 'children's programming'. There is your children getting a bit older and finding more adult programming.
Recently awoke to my seven year old giving me a dissertation about Area 51 and UFOs. He's discovered the History Channel and turns it on at dawn.

That is my favorite song of any Disney movie...EVER!!!
The whole last verse...LOVE it!
Be our guest! Be our guest!
Our command is your request
It's been years since we've had anybody here
And we're obsessed
With your meal, with your ease
Yes, indeed, we aim to please
While the candlelight's still glowing
Let us help you, We'll keep going
Course by course, one by one
'Til you shout, "Enough! I'm done!"
Then we'll sing you off to sleep as you digest
Tonight you'll prop your feet up
But for now, let's eat up
Be our guest!
Be our guest!
Be our guest!
Please, be our guest!

I have The Song of the South on DVD. It's horrible quality because it's part of a 500 Disney/cartoon movie collection that my husband picked up in Iraq for my daughter. Let's just say we can watch a Disney movie a day for a long time! At least I love Disney and I look forward to our nightly movie than she does.

LOL yes. I still have a book of tickets in the backroom (no E tickets though we used those of course). I liked the old Disney, rather than the new Disney. I suspect it has a lot to do with my age, nostalgia and all. I loved going to Disneyland as a kid and the whole atmosphere. Now those movies, yeah. I am sick of them also. My daughter and son both grew up watching The Little Mermaid ad nauseum. I got to where I had to get out of the house and go to the grocery store so I wouldn't have to listen to the darn dialogue LOL.

Unfortunately they never will release Song of the South on DVD...as it's not PC.
My mom's husband has a huge movie collection of over 1700...a lot of them are classic Disney, and he does have Song of the South, which he burnt a copy of for us.
I remember being 4 or 5 years old when Disney re-released SotS at the theater and my mom taking my sister and me to see it...That is one of Disney's greatest films ever...
Alladin is about the only one from the time when you and I were growing up that I really care for.

Love the OLD Disney. Have never made it to DisneyWorld, it's the original for me.
I'm sure that I could watch some of that stuff again...someday...My daughter's obsession with it at a young age has created some PTSD that is going to take awhile for me to get over! :))
As to the store? Omg. More than once my husband walked in the door and I had my keys in my hand. "What do you need to get?"

If you're PC you'll despise it...all that racist slave lingo that Uncle Remus is talking about Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Bear..and Da Tar Baby...
Give me a frickin' break....
I've got the book of Uncle Remus stories that my mother use to read to me, she gave it to us after our twins were born...someone else bought the "new and improved" version for us too...It took all the life out of it...Brother Bear and Brother Rabbit and the Child Made of Fossil Fuels...WTH!!!

I have four children, ages 15 to 2. We own all the Disney movies, from the Fantasia to whatever the last one was to come out on DVD, and have watched them a number of times. My daughter grew up on Winnie the Pooh. My younger ones each have their favorites. Caleb, Cars of course. I think I have seen it at least 100 times since it came out. Kirsten (4) is going through a Peter Pan period. Corinne (2) loves anything "Princess". She does sit and watch Beauty and the Beast. I am trying really hard to think of one of their movies that makes me want to claw my eyes out, and right now I cannot think of any. I guess, since we have such a large collection, we don't really watch one over and over again.
Besides Disney, we also have every Veggie Tales, Larry Boy, 3-2-1 Penguines also. My daughter also has every Shirley Temple video, including her biography one. Those are all on VHS though. I am a sucker when it comes to collections. Once they hook me on one, I usually end up purchasing them all. I don't know for sure how many movies we have, I started counting once and gave up. I know that we have 2 6x4' book cases full of Disney kids movies, another built-in book case that is so full, we started putting the VHS movies in two rows on each shelf to make room for the DVDs we have purchased, and those we are having to stack up and down because we have run out of room. I could probably make a good chunk of change if I just sold all of our movies and books.

I was always kind of partial to the age when Don Bluth was still an animator at Disney (Robin Hood, Pete's Dragon, etc.). Now that I'm older, I notice that I may be more of a Bluth fan than a Disney fan.

Perhaps, although it didn't scare him. I think it just doesn't have enough cutesy animation (or cars and trucks) to interest him lol. He perked up at the crow scenes, so maybe that's it.
