Well, sometimes.
Anyways, that's the hook. Since I enjoy film, and since we are gladly a film culture (which keeps our books important) - I thought, hey - why not a personal favorite thing-a-ma-jig.
Top 10 movies of the last ten years:
Best 5 comedies, ever.
Best 5 sci-fi movies, ever.
Best 5 dramas, ever.
Top 5 (and only 5) movies of all time.
No categories allowed for horror, romantic comedy or buddy flicks. Don't even try it.
Mine - (and my lists are weighted towards the modern film epoch, because I personally loathe the stage-on-camera style of the 1940s-1970s).
Top 10 movies of the last ten years:
1. American Beauty
2. Serenity
3. The Professional
4. Layer Cake
5. House of Flying Daggers
6. The 13th Warrior
7. The Incredibles
8. Chocolat
9. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
10. The Matrix (a very weak 10th; I wavered on this, considering instead Gladiator, The Prestige and Master and Commander).
Best 5 comedies, ever:
1. Monty Python and The Holy Grail
2. The Hangover. It was that good.
3. Life of Brian.
4. The Gods Must Be Crazy.
5. Little Miss Sunshine.

The Gods Must Be Crazy is along my type of humor. That bottle falling from the sky was quite fun to follow to the end of the earth.
I enjoyed the "I see dead people..." movie, The Sixth Sense as well as The Prestige, both for their twists in what we thought we knew but didn't know.
Cult classics (imo) are the Kill Bill I and II movies, still put my hands on my hips, Rocky Horror Picture Show*, the original Planet of the Apes and Psycho. *the ONLY movie I'll watch that has Susan Surandumb in it.
Movie I felt betrayed by the most (in book form too): The DaVinci Code (Dan Brown ripped this entire blood line theory off, and he is as true to symbolism as a Cheerio is to a halo).
Childhood movies I loved that I still adore: The Wizard of Oz, The Red Balloon
Entertainment: Enjoy Ben Hur (I'm a Charlton Heston fan too, of sorts), The Ten Commandments, the extended versions of all The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Mostly I enjoy watching documentaries.

The problem with these type of lists, is that there are so many movies that are actually on an even par with the ones on my list. I love Monty Python movies, but I made my comedy list by remembering back to the first time I saw each movie and how much I laughed at the time. The one exception was "Joe Dirt"... that movie actually gets funnier each time I watch it.

I concur. And there's the matter of movies which cross genres - like American Beauty. It's dark comedy and drama at once, which is why I kept it off the drama and comedy lists, but still consider it the greatest movie ever made.

A great example of the subjectiveness of the cinema, as I hated that movie. :eh:

I have to call a foul, "The Professional", if it is the one I think it is, with Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman and Jean Reno, was released in 1994, too old for the top ten of the last ten years list. Sorry to nit pick here.

It's not all subjective. Does anyone think Biodome was a good movie? Even Pauly Shore (who's actually made a fairly clever film called Paul Shore Is Dead)?

It's part of the "whoops typo" comment in my edit. I'd originally set it up as "last twenty years" but wanted to narrow the category. Thanks for the catch.

That is interesting you should say that. I, personally (in my opinion), thought the movie quite plastic and full of air.
As Lester put it:
"I guess I could be really ****ed off about what happened to me...but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst...and then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain. And I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life. You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday."

If "Platoon" is your top movie of all time, how can it not also be your top drama of all time? I don't get it.
I was looking for a way to fit more movies in, when I ran out of space in the drama section they just got moved to best all time.

Hard Candy was a superior film (along with another release out in the same period, Brick), but it's scope is too narrow for greatness, IMHO.
"Brick" was a good film too, I agree, really loved the disturbing nature of "Hard Candy". I would be remiss if I did not agree with your choice of "Layer Cake". Just when you thought he made it out of the grind....

I'm not the biggest Western fan....so if I like it, it goes in my top ten list :))
I personally think that is Val Kilmer's best performance.
I also want to add Young Guns.

I absolutely love movies, and can talk about them all day, but I also absolutely loath trying to put them into lists, so I feel left out here.
Tried to rank my DVD collection once, but only got a fraction of the way through, and got bored and stopped.
So I'll just list (in no particular order) some of the ones already mentioned here:
Some of that I love:
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle (plenty of 'remember that?' scenes)
Tombstone (Russell and Kilmer at their peaks)
The Dark Knight (Ledger stole the show)
Hard Candy (Good lord, practically a horror movie)
Groundhog Day (Fun to watch over, and over, and over...)
The Prestige (A movie that makes you think long after you watch it)
The Green Mile (The best adaptation of a King novel)
Back to the Future (Best trilogy ever)
Joe Dirt (My favorite comedy of all time)
Some that I hate:
Monty Python (just can't get into Python)
Sweeney Todd (if I knew it was a musical I wouldn't have wasted my time)
Citizen Kane (I just don't see what's so special)
High Fidelity (Love Cusack, just not in this)
Noises Off (Absolutely hated it.)
Donnie Darko (Love time travel, but this was just too bizarre.)
Some that I think are good but are overrated:
Blade Runner (Good scifi, but why the cult following?)
Shawshank Redemption (It's good, but people really go overboard with it)
The Godfather (Never was into the whole mafia thing)
Casablanca (Just seemed flat to me. I didn't care about the characters)
Little Miss Sunshine (The 'fun' ending didn't overcome the total disfunctionalness for me.)
Just my two cents.

Snags...I'm with ya on the Python.
But then again...I deteste British humor.
I also agree about Citizen Kane...how that continually ranks as number 1 Movie of All Time leaves me baffled.

I do also want to give Stand By me an honorable mention....one of the best coming of age stories ever, and River Phoenix was amazing and had such promise.
