Many fanatic Socialists love to boast about Socialism working well in tiny nations, such as Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark. The interesting thing is that they NEVER can present Socialism Success stories in larger nations.
WHY?
Because Socialism, like Monarchy, only works well and without tyranny when you have a small community, such as a nuclear family, or a religious commune, or small nations that barely number a few million members of a narrow ethnic group. When you begin to have large heterogeneous groups of people, reciprocity and altruism breaks down under the natural weight of everyone looking out for his/her own. Without reciprocity and altruism, the natural outcome is chaos and "law of the jungle".
This is where American Capitalism is the only natural antidote to social breakdown with tyranny minimized, by empowering its individual citizens such that they can defend their interests in a non-violent way. The only other alternative to the social breakdown brought about by heterogeneity is State Tyranny, which often follows logically from Socialism or Monarchic Feudalism. By the way, Socialism is just a new name to Monarchic Feudalism, as can be seen in its fringes, such as North Korea, Mao's China, Syria, and other Socialist Utopias, but that is another topic.
The fact is that Socialism does not function well in large communities, such as large nations having more than 10 million citizens, particularly nations where the ethnic majority numbers less than 80%. The only way for Socialism to function in large heterogeneous nations, or even as small as Cuba, is by running a State Tyranny, where there is no multi-party system, and no freedom of speech, or even freedom of religion. With State Tyranny, power is centralized, and restricted, and members of the elite have access to all the benefits, exploiting the masses as if cattle.
