A Maine East High School teacher was held in lieu of $50,000 bail Monday after she was charged with sexual abuse during an eight-month affair with an underage former student.

Jennifer Espinosa, 38, of Park Ridge appeared in Bond Court in Skokie charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart in a news release.

Espinosa, a science and special education teacher, allegedly told police she had an eight-month relationship with the 16-year-old boy, who was expelled from the school in September. The teen is an alleged gang member, according to the release.

The teacher told police she "loves" the boy, the release said.

Espinosa was arrested after sheriff's police picked her up Saturday evening at the Golf Terrace Apartments in the 9600 block of North Golf Terrace in Des Plaines. They were patrolling the area because of reports of recent gang and drug activity, according to the release.

I know some good teachers, but these sex abuse cases are giving teaching a bad name. What are schools doing to ensure they don't have bad teachers abusing children? Apparently not enough.

That lady has some serious issues. And yes, I agree that good teachers get a bad 'rap' a lot of the time, because of dysfunctional people like this teacher.

lol

Apparently this kid was a gang member......so the NEA might say it was just self-esteem building and gang out reach.

What is it about the teaching profession that attracts these kind of people? Are they just losers with no self-esteem looking for power over others?

Could be, I do not know. I do however think we let kids be teachers and that is a huge mistake. I think after you get your teaching 'degree' *cough*, you should have to spend at least five years working some non civil job, like road construction or what ever, that way you actually know how the world works before you become a system blip. Mr. M is/was a teacher. He also owned a ski resort, and has done a good many other things. I would love to see teachers of his quality. In fact I would pull teeth to get them.

Where the hell were these teachers when I was in high school a few years ago?

Unless you've been in the shoes of a teacher, you really are in no position to judge her.

(That was sarcasm for those that don't recognize it.)

That line only works if sleeping with the students is a job related task........for example

'When accusing a police officer of unreasonable force, you really don't have a clue what reasonable or unreasonable is unless you've actually had to use force on someone'.

or

'Unless you've been in combat, you really don't have much frame of reference to judge whether a soldier should have fired back or held his composure when he was being shot at'

See the difference?

I don't have to walk in a teachers shoes to know how NOT to sleep with children. It's like a police officer being accused of robbing a bank.......it has nothing to do with his job as a police officer EXCEPT he happened to be one....his job isn't robbing banks, and we're not critiquing the manner in which he is performing his job.

Now, if the subject were teacher burnout or how tough it is at an inner-city school......that line would definitely work! When being sarcastic you have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples and not apples to bowling balls. ;)

According to this

http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/001737.html

There are 6.1 million teachers. This would represent a city somewhat more than LA and less than NYC.

How many are doing naughty things with students? 15? 20? 100?

Use the math the teachers taught you and figure out that in any given population there are going to be some bad apples and I (personally) think teachers have far fewer than you'd find anyplace else.

Actually, there is no difference. The teacher was in a position of authority over the student. She abused that authority by engaging in a sexual relationship with him.

Police officers are in a position of authority over those they arrest. In the Alabama case on another thread, they abused their authority by beating a suspect who had been thrown from a vehicle and was unconcious.

I don't have to be a teacher or a police officer to think that both were wrong.

Stop making sense, you'll confuse him.

I am not saying that she was ugly enough to stop a locomotive, but, I put a copy of her picture on the local railroad track and a train derailed. Coincidence?

Uh, no genius, the teachers job was not to sleep with the student......not even close.....the police officers job IS to arrest individuals, AND use force when necessary.

If the best you have is 'They both had power' it's a silly argument.....as, unlike making an arrest, SLEEPING WITH THE STUDENT is not a job function of a teacher.

That's analogous, AGAIN, to the Police Officer robbing a bank......I don't condone officers robbing banks, or stealing, or committing such crimes. They should go to prison....

....but that's not what you guys spend most of your time critiquing......it's usually about officer so-and-so pulling someone over and writing them a ticket, and you thought he was rude, or deputy this chasing someone when you don't think he should have, or officer such-and-such hitting a resisting suspect, and you disagreed with how he did it.........

We aren't critiquing the manner in which the teacher slept with the student, as you are critiquing the manner in which an arrest was conducted......you KNOW this, you just don't LIKE this. ;)

That boy will be messed up for life and will continue to try to get into every girl he meets pants.. Luckly it's a female teacher who will get probation. If it were a male teacher, he would get the electric chair.

:)) To your first sentence. Amazingly accurate for just about any boy, whether he was molested by his teacher or not.

As for the rest, that hits as pretty accurate as well.
