View Full Version : Steppenwolf Lyrics More Relevant Now Than Ever?

A post in WP brought some memories back from music in my youth.
It reminded me of the Steppenwolf song Monster which was a very topical protest song at the time but now it almost seems more prescient to our current situation.
What do you think?
In particular it is the last two movements (?) of the song that I find intriguing.
(Suicide)
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'
Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching
(America)
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

More relevant than ever.
It seems that people see the direction we are headed but the bulk of them are only concerned with what it is they feel they will profit from the "change."
They only look at what they think is profit without bothering to consider the cost.

I guess that was a factor I hadn't considered?
Anyone that could actually remember the late 60's and early 70's.

I fear we swerved onto the road to hell with FDR policies then were firmly traveling down it with LBJ, "The Great Society" was an ignored warning sign for us that the bridge was out ahead, and now with BHO we just might drive off that bridge into the chasm of final economic doom.

Can someone tell me who was in power when those lyrics were written? Was it a Republican administration or a Democrat one because I'm sure those lyrics were EVEN more relevant at the time.....

Nixon
More relevant?
Nope. Although Nixon is not on my list of favorite Presidents by any stretch of the imagination...the lyrics are more relevant than ever with Obama the idiot in chief in office.
He is bankrupting this country with a quickness and it's being done at the cost of our freedom.
What a shame for this country that the average citizen is too busy chewing the cuds while trying to figure out how they can profit from the latest "stimulus" giveaway to even begin to consider the cost of the "giveaway."

The local conservative talk show host, Jim Quinn, has been using that excerpt from the song to start off his show for about 15 years now.

"ball of confusion" by the temptations has been relevant since it was written......
1, 2... 1, 2, 3, 4, Ow!
People moving out, people moving in. Why, because of the color of their skin.
Run, run, run but you sure can't hide.
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
Vote for me and I'll set you free.
Rap on, brother, rap on.
Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the...(preacher.)
And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the...(teacher.)
Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration,
Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation.
Ball of confusion. Oh yeah, that's what the world is today. Woo, hey, hey.
The sale of pills are at an all time high.
Young folks walking round with their heads in the sky.
The cities ablaze in the summer time.
And oh, the beat goes on.
Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul.
Shooting rockets to the moon, kids growing up too soon.
Politicians say more taxes will solve everything.
And the band played on.
So, round and around and around we go.
Where the world's headed, nobody knows.
[Instrumental]
Oh, great googalooga, can't you hear me talking to you.
Just a ball of confusion.
Oh yeah, that's what the world is today.
Woo, hey, hey.
Fear in the air, tension everywhere.
Unemployment rising fast, the Beatles new record's a gas.
And the only safe place to live is on an Indian reservation.
And the band played on.
Eve of destruction, tax deduction, city inspectors, bill collectors,
Mod clothes in demand, population out of hand, suicide, too many bills,
Hippies moving to the hills. People all over the world are shouting, 'End the war.'
And the band played on.
[Instrumental]
Great googalooga, can't you hear me talking to you.
Sayin'... ball of confusion.
That's what the world is today, hey, hey.
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya.
Sayin'... ball of confusion.
That's what the world is today, hey, hey.
Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya.
Sayin'... ball of confusion.

Richard Nixon had only been in office a few months when it was released.
LBJ had been VP then President before that.

Well I can't speak for what the US was like back then but someone was moved to write those lyrics so I think they WERE relevant back then....
And by the way Obama has only been in office for a matter of a few months and you've ALREADY decided he's an idiot?.....
A bigger idiot than his predecessor?.....
Now isn't that stretching credibility way beyond breaking point?........

Can anyone tell me what this one means?
Lump sat alone in a boggy marsh, totally motionless except for her heart.
Mud flowed up into lump's pajamas, she totally confused all the passing piranhas.
She's lump she's lump she's in my head.
She's lump shea lump she might be dead.
Lump lingered last in line for brains and the one she got was sort of rotten and insane.
Small things so sad that birds could land, is lump fast asleep or rocking out with the band?.....
And is it relevant?:)

Oddly enough that song was written and performed by "The Presidents of the United States of America"

America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
This reminds me of the the poem "Footprints in the Sand": "The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand, is when I carried you."
"America" ie., the Constitution, IS here for us.
WE the People are responsible to see that it is followed correctly by our leaders. Thus making America here for us!

Yes sadly for America a few idiots made her relevant. :))

America's strength has always been its people.
Remember we threw off the yoke of England before we had our Constitution.
If the people don't act we are doomed.

Back then, the songs were pretty much "anti" all government, regardless of political party and were also "anti" war - Vietnam.
So, your analogy, while interesting isn't relevent to this particular "past."
