I have family with England staying with me and we have the local fox morning news show on, they have just pointed out that the last 30 minutes has not been news at all but commercials for local business masquerading as a news story

A local bar doing pilates sessions - lots of information of how you can contact them and a local pool offering swimming tips - lots of information how you can contact them.

I have never really thought about this before but its true local news is really just a collection of commercials with the occasional real news story interspersed.

Thankfully I can still get real news from BBC America

Eh... Slow news day.

Whatta ya gonna do, go rob a bank and film it? There are some days you gotta fill it up with something. If features are all you have, that's all you have.

...local...

Here in order to help you better understand the situation I removed the words that were cluttering your post so we can get to the real issue your family "with" England is having with how things are done on this side of the pond.

We are a very large diverse nation encompassing four time zones just in the contiguous states.

We have hundreds, perhaps thousands, of "local" Television programming markets sprinkled all across the continent.

All these stations are competing for viewers and by golly "local" market programming just has a tendency to reflect "local" businesses with "local" interest story themes because the "locals" kind of like it that way.

It also, if one pays attention, happens that more of these types of pieces get aired around Holidays, this is due to multiple reasons.

Holiday themed stories are quite prevalent at these times, I.E. water safety piece done at the local water park.

Lighter themed stories are also shown because lots of people don't want "heavy" news first thing in the morning, or around their holiday plans and activities.

But we do have options for national and world news if that is what we so desire, including the most righteous BBC News on cable or satellite. :)

So your family "with" England appears to not have an understanding of how we do things here thus the problem lies with a situational misunderstanding and not some flaw in our ointment.

There was a time where the balance of news stories were mandated to have positive news as well as negative news. Over time the rules were relaxed to a real time remote reporting in your face style. My, how technology has evolved. I believe it's all in the marketing of the news.

I'm all for watch California car chases. :))
