Who's idea was this.....

Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes????

:eh:

Why do I have the feeling that Jeremy Brett is doing summersaults in his grave.

Downey is a wonderful actor, but if there was ever a character where physical type absolutely matters, it's Sherlock Holmes. The casting and the material have been thrashed back and forth on the IMDB boards since this was announced - it looks fairly entertaining, but real Sherlockians will have their knickers in a twist.

Robert Downey Jr is an outstanding actor...he won an Oscar for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the early 90's.

He was nominated for an Oscar but did not win for 1992's Chaplin
He is still one of his generations best actors IMO.

So because he won an academy award portraying a black and blind music icon, that makes him qualified to play Sinatra? In order for Scorsese and Foxx to pull this off, wouldn't the entire viewing audience need to be blind?

if Jamie Foxx is allowed to play Frank Sinatra, then when the first Obama movie is made, I think he should be portrayed by by Alfred E Neuman.

I don't buy it.

I think DiCaprio's a shoo-in if he can sing it.

I thought the Foxx as Sinatra story had been debunked.

Not arguing that Downey isn't a good actor, but the Holmes role seems an odd fit. Holmes has been traditionally portrayed as a rather flat character without much in the way of emotion or action. It is all cerebral, and stiff/stuffy. Jeremy Brett inhabitied that role well. Downey's acting talents to me lie in another direction.

I also heard rumors that they are releasing a new Three Stooges movie next year. It's supposed to be about the early careers of the three. But, when I heard the stars were going to be Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, and Benitio Del Toro. No thank you!

Yes, that is a really difficult casting to understand!

I always wished they would make a "Land of the Lost" movie. But once I saw the ****tard they cast in it you cannot pay me to go.

Holmes could be quite emotional. Watson - the Canon's principle chronicler - commented on those "hidden fires". Watson also observes that Holmes was "always in training" - remember, Holmes was a fencer and boxer with knowledge of Asian forms of wrestling (called "baritsu" in the Canon). He was also an impressive distance runner and had enough physical strength to straighten an iron poker with his bare hands in "The Speckled Band".
There was a very good book about the Granada series and Brett's take on Holmes, called "Bending the Willow", by David Stuart Davies.
