I thought the poor wouldn't have to pay taxes or have their taxes increased.

Why with all the billions of dollars pouring into the states from the federal level, I'd think they'd be cutting taxes!

Wouldn't it be smarter to just have the government collect your check and then in return they provide you with some basic clothes, basic housing, and a bicycle?

PA is 6%, and has been shifting blue for past few elections. I'm just surprised that MA was 5%. Something in the 8%-10% range would probably fit them better, based on what I have seen from their politics.

Ask Mitt Romney what he thinks the sales tax should be there. Make sure you have a recent poll of MA citizens on what they believe to show him before asking the question.

But if I am not mistaken, Texas does not have a income tax either. It is more like a fair tax type system. In Illinois, you have a governor proposing increasing the income tax from 3% to 4.5% with a minimum of a 6.25% sales tax on general merchandise. In some areas up north, like Chicago, the sales tax is 9.25% on general merchandise. Don't even get me started on gasoline and cigarette taxes in this state.

I hear ya. NJ taxes are heavy too...but salaries are much higher. I lived in FL for a while and there was no income tax. Not bad, but I'm making double in NJ what I made down there.

All & all though, taxes suck ass and the politi-bitches need to learn how to stop spending so much. Slash slash slash.

A 25% jump in the base rate of taxation is not the same as a raw 25% jump.

Its crazy. Our schmuck, Jon Corzine, lied to get into office by saying he would reduce property taxes by 30% over his "first" term. The sales tax went from 6 to 7 % and we're still "broke".

Oh...and my property taxes went up.

I miss that no income tax down there... :)

No, we have no income tax in texas... sales tax is 8 1/4% most places, some places less...What I will say, Texas is a conservative state pretty much...there is money in the bank at this time and the housing crisis hasn't hurt us like so many places...our unemployement rate was the lowest in the country a couple months ago. don't know about now. I do know that 70% of the job growth in the US in 2008 was in Texas.

Texas has money in the bank and Texans have money in their pockets. We don't pay state income tax. I'll take a higher sales tax any day of the year.

We have money in our pockets, thank you. Sales tax is not that much higher than other states -and overall taxes are certainly much, much lower than average for those who pay state income tax plus state sales tax.

I think, if its like here in Georgia, property taxes are local. I would dare say, those taxes would likely be highest in Democrat districts as opposed to Conservative or Moderate districts........ which are growing fewer each year because of stinkin northern leftist relocating to the south.

agreed.
Seven states choose to impose no income tax. These states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Additionally, New Hampshire and Tennessee limit their state income taxes to dividends and interest income only.
