Hey everyone, I'm new to these forums. I was trying to find a job in this tough economy. So, I posted up that I needed work for the weekends on craigslist and an employer contacted me back. I sent back a resume and a cover letter. In my resume I included my experiences with the University at Albany College Republicans because I felt that they were important to secure the job. The response that I received was, "Aww Jim, Ya had me right up until I read the word REPUBLICAN!"

Is this even legal? It may be, but it is unethical. I was wondering if any of you knew where I could send a copy of the email exchange to let people know about the hiring practices of this business.

Putting political associations in a resume is bad news unless you are applying for a position in a political party.

I second that. Not sure why you even put that on there. Employers are not required to ask you a slew of things including age, gender, race, political affiliations, etc.

Burden's on you, so far as I know.

I agree with the others that putting your political affiliation on the resume is not wise.

On the other hand, what the employer did was unethical. Unless you have some poltical statment on your resume.

If it's a big corporation you might have a legal case. If it's a mom/pop shop chuck it up to a learning experience.

Did you answer this guy?

You might want to hang on to the correspondance for a while.

I agree. Probably a bad idea putting that in there. I would never do that.

Putting your religion or your political party on a resume is not standard procedure.

Hmmm....

Unfortunately for him, but good for employers if it is a right to work state he has no case.

They can hire or fire for a good reason, bad reason, any reason or no reason as long as it is not illegal i.e. Chapter VII

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. §2000e
prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
http://eeoa.army.pentagon.mil/web/legal_auth/laws.htm

Political affiliation is not a protected category. Of course you also can't hire/fire based on Disability due to Americans with Disability Act and there is some job protecion for employees in a workplace with over 50 employees under Family Medical Leave Act when they qualify (after one year with at least 1250 hours)

Drop the political reference in your resume would be my suggestion. If I aw a college Dem I may unconsciously move them to a lower position.

This reminds me of all those "SingleDad" threads right after the election.

"The University at Albany College Republicans is a group of like-minded students working to promote the basic ideas and principles of the Republican Party both on campus and in their communities."

I would pose this to the above group and see what their like-minded response on employer rights is/are.

YES....to protect our freedoms from Liberal , Leftist, Socialist Nazis whose only reason for living is to destroy this great country by "social reform"....destroying our capitalist way of life and by attempting to implement marxist ideology when it has failed in every nation that has employed it. We need private ownership of guns and a loyal and educated/intelligent military to protect America from the Liberal Left.

Not for anything....if I was an employer and I read a resume and a guy or gal touted being LIBERAL in their political views...I would not ever interview them but throw their resume in the trash or use it for toilet paper...even better.

If you're in New York State, you could have a discrimination suit on your hands:

http://www.labor.state.ny.us/agencyinfo/moa/pdf/element2/E2%20-%20Orange%20Works%20-%20Summary%20of%20Nondiscrimination%20Training.pdf

Political affiliation is protected under NY state law.

One of my biggest pains is a lib we have working in MN.

He was Bush bashing for 8 years! He constantly complains about the benfits even though he only pays $96 bucks a month for family PPO!

He's upset that although he lives in Minneapolis, there aren't alot of facilities and doctors in network in Madison, WI where his daughter goes to college!

I'm checking with my benefits broker to see if we can offer out of state employees the money we would pay for them to get their own damed coverage. He had the nerve to tell me his wife's plan is better but he would have to pay $800!

WHINER!

Why can't he put down that he worked in a Republican group? If it shows that he has community involvement and was productive in that group. Some employers want to know if you group and leadership skills. i was in the Black Student Union one time, should I not put that down?

EVERY job I've ever applied for asks about groups and activities you were involved with in school. I would have put it there too, if I had been involved with such an organization.

What's more distrubing is that you expected nothing but serious responses from Craigslist. Perhaps you'll have better luck on in a Yahoo chatroom.

You don't brag about being a Republican on a job resume. You get the job, do it well, exceed expectations and prove it after you've been hired.

I would.
There's a good possibility of that.

I've never placed my political leanings on my resume...even when I volunteered for Representative Rogers campaign, I just choose not to list it. There are plenty of other things I can list on there...That's just good common sense IMO.

And if that was the employers reason all they had to say is, "We've chose another candidate." or something to that effect.

Any employer with any sense about them wouldn't come out and say that, they've opened the door to a possible lawsuit.

Of course, I guess the employer could just be an idiot...When I was working for the Military Commissary at Ft. McClellan, I was also the Music Minister at my church. We were closed on Sunday, and my Meat Market Mgr. had made it a point that I wouldn't work past 4 on Wednesday afternoons because of my church responsibilities. He left and while we were waiting for a new mgr. to come in the store manager was making our schedules...She scheduled me to work until 6. I went to her and explained the situation, and that one of the other employees was willing to swap with me, she said, "That's not my problem. I've got a store to run and when I schedule someone I expect them to be here."

I walked over to the file hanger on the wall where we kept the EEO complaint forms and said, "Do you really want to go that route?"

She immediately changed the schedule.

Now, would I have really done that? Probably not, but she got a little refresher course in courtesy and common sense.
