Talk about a Nanny State on Steroids...

MONTREAL — Anyone who has ridden an escalator and bothered to pay attention has seen – and likely ignored – little signs suggesting riders hold the grimy handrail. In Montreal's subway system, the friendly advice seems to have taken on the force of law, backed by a $100 fine.

Bela Kosoian, a 38-year-old mother of two, says when she didn't hold the handrail Wednesday she was cuffed, dragged into a small holding cell and fined.

“It was horrible, disgusting behaviour [by police],” said Ms. Kosoian, a 38-year-old student of international law. “I did nothing wrong. They should go find the guys who stole my tires off the balcony.”

I'm all for safety, but fining people for not using a handrail on an escalator is freakin ridiculous. I can't imagine the mindset of a people that would allow this type of non-sense to take place in their lives.

And yet I fear that very same mindset, like an infectious disease is finding its way into my country.

Idiots in charge of idiot-proofing the world.

The old joke about the mattress police isn't such a stretch anymore, is it?

Follow the money. People not holding handrails MIGHT lose balance, fall and get hurt. Canada has "free" national health care, but paying for it isn't cheap. Look for this type of fascism in your nearest department store if "free" health care comes to America.

This woman is a criminal. She should be arrested and have a whole slew of charges pressed against her. This is inexcusable in a civilized society.

Fortunately, soon we will know about all of these deviants and be able to bring them to justice because we'll have a civilian national security force that is just as powerful, just as strong and just as well funded as our military.

If she was in a wheelchair I could see why this would be a serious matter. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ndx_IdlUQU

This is what you get when your fuzz departments turn from 'serve and protect' to 'fine and arrest'. When departments have citation and arrest quotas to meet. When more arrests means more overtime, which means more pay. When cops adopt a us vs. them mentality. When protecting the state from its people becomes a priority and protecting the people from their state becomes neglected.

Get used to it. People don't believe in police corruption until it happens to them.

You know that if you give up your guns and all claim to the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, you'll be much safer, right?

Sometimes you get lucky and draw the special officer. I got the special officer once, right at my home.

Never argue with a officer. I tried to tell one that I was the home owner when he asked me why I was in my front yard loading things into my truck on a Sunday afternoon.

He did not want to hear that.

Ok, I'm pretty sure the story would have mentioned it if she was in a wheelchair.

That being said, that's probably the funniest video I've ever seen. :))

The transit people will probably want the charges withdrawn and the news up shows the police are little embarassed by the whole thing

The best thing about escalators is that they can never break.

They can only become stairs.

I think I was on that same escalator. Very frustrating.
