There is a physiological reason for doing so... When human infants are born, they are first inoculated with intestinal and bucchal microflora from their mother's vagina. As such, they lack the means of establishing an adaptive immune response, since they've never encountered bacteria before!
There are two evolutionary adaptations to this set-back:
1. Breastmilk supplies the infant with antibodies. This gives the child a "jump-start" so his/her immune system is protected in its infancy.
2. "Mouthing" and "licking" provides the child with outside bacterial cultures. It's pretty disgusting, but this is the way that children acquire more bacteria to populate their systems. With Mom's antibodies coursing through them, they can afford to be a little bit risky. Having said that, this is why children are havens for disease

Interesting.
What happens to the cesarean kids?
My mom related a story when her oldest was just born. She asked the doctor when it was ok to stop boiling the bottles (olden days). He told her "Oh about the time he starts licking the floor".

First child - the pacifier gets sterilized if it even comes within 2 feet of the floor.
Second child - the pacifier gets rinsed off in the sink if it falls on the floor
Third and subsequent children - the pacifier may get brushed off if in fact it landed in anything disgusting.

The kids have to fight the dogs over what falls on the floor.
