View Full Version : Does anyone know anything about swine flu?

The 11 year old didn't want to eat breakfast this morning. Wouldn't hardly eat dinner.

The kid doesn't have school tommorow (voting day in Ohio ) She wanted to stay up, but went to sleep at about 7:00.

She has a 101 temperature. By coincidence, I don't feel so hot either. Muscle aches that are spreading, 99 temperature (which means I'm not dying).

So, okay with me, I don't care. I figure flu and I won't die.

But my kid? All of a sudden, it's an "emergency" and of course the first thing I think is "CRAP, I hope it's not swine flu."

Has anyone had it/know someone who did? I'm not getting very satisfactory answers from Web MD and the like on the exact symptoms. I just want to know if I should be concerned.

I'll most likely take the kid to the doctor anyway (while Mom as usual suffers :)) )

Just wondering if anyone has any information I doin't have.

Swine flu symptoms are no different than what we think of as regular flu symptoms.

My opinion would be to isolate yourselves and call your doctor in the morning.

Our local news had one recovering victim on...it sounds like just a particularly potent bout of the flu, but not necessarily more dangerous.

Agreed.

The message we are getting here (Australia) is that the H1N1 (swine flu) appears to be no more threatening than the annual infections which visit all of us.

However, even 'regular' flu shouldn't be sneezed at (sorry, couldn't resist!). Several hundred thousand die each year worldwide from the flu.

Treat the symptoms, see a doc.

Whatever bug you've got, it's best to avoid spreading it to others.

If you want to go to the doctor, call ahead and let them know you might have H1N1. They'll make special arrangements to limit contact with other patients and get you treated a little more quickly.

Other than that, the rest and fluids is what typically does it.

Hope you both feel better!!

Sorry to hear, Sam.

Visit your doctor tomorrow and and hope you all get well soon!

This version of the H1N1 influenza virus seemingly does cause gastro-intestinal discomfort, so these could easily be symptoms of such a thing.

Just a couple of things to check:
1. Is your child's neck feeling "stiff" or hard to move?
2. Is your child averse to bright lights?
3. Is your child feeling incredibly lethargic?

I'm not an MD, so definitely get a pediatrician on the phone, and make sure that both of you get time off to spend at home. Contact with other people would DEFINITELY not be a good idea!

I hope you both feel much better soon!

She's complaining of stomache ache this morning.

I had the stiff neck yesterday. She hasn't complained about muscle aches.

She's sleeping A LOT.

She scared the hell out of us last night. She got up in the middle of the night crying her eyes out. Said, she couldn't sleep (despite the fact she went to bed at 7:00 last night and slept the whole night) and that it was my fault because I wouldn't let her change the wheel. :eh:

Well we realized she was talking in her sleep. And soothed her and put her back to bed. She went right back to sleep. This morning she had no memory of it happening. I figured she had done it in her sleep. Really weird.

Her temps normal this morning, but she says her stomach hurts and she still won't eat. I'm calling the doctor as soon as they open.

Ok, this is AGAIN not a full fledged medical opinion, but it doesn't appear to be meningitis from what you told me. I would still describe all that you just told me to a doctor as soon as you're physically able. They have a FAR better diagnostic array of tests than I can perform over the internet.

Yeah, she already has an appointment for today. Thank you.

You're welcome. In the meantime, monitor her temperature every so often, give her soup and ginger ale if her stomach is feeling queasy and have her get lots of bed rest.

It's also important that she drinks alot of fluids (yourself as well!). Gatorade, or pedilite (I think that's the name of the brand...) are two excellent choices for drinks for her. Both hydrate far better than carbonated beverages, and will restore some electrolytes.

Cold compresses can alleviate some of the symptoms of fatigue and heat from a fever, though I would not advise a cold shower/bath. Tepid water for both of you when you bathe.

Hope you all are feeling better after going to the doctor and getting a Dx and maybe an Rx.

Let us know what's up.

Back from the doctor. She says it is NOT swine flu. The kid just has the normal flu. She's already feeling better.

Scratch off one more parent going over the deep end when it comes to their kid.

Thanks for everyone's concern.

I would call the doctor, don't diagnose yourself over the internet. You might find out you have lupus.
