View Full Version : Gamers thread #172 LOTR online

I lost count on how many threads we had before, but figured I would start one myself.

I found myself getting bored with multi-boxing WoW, you can only level so may toons before the runs ... well they run together.

So I tried at the suggestion of a friend, LOTR Online, and I must say I was surprised at the lore involved. Much more involved then I could imagine, as I had to go back to the books and say, well I'll be damned, that landmark was there.

Does anyone else here play LOTR, and if so, anyone on Brandywine?

Only had the game for about a week, but so far my Dwarf Guardian is at 22 Roshamboin is his name.

Look me up if you are, or post here, and I'll add you to the friends list.

Would be nice to have a small group from the forums here.

I was considering it.

Seems well polished. I enjoyed the free trial.

Easily one of the best MMO games out there right now. The classes are great, the servers are very stable, and the community as a whole is helpful and mature. You will not find all of immature tripe that is found in the forums of WoW. This game come highly recommended for gamers and lovers of books as well. Lore-Master btw is badass!

Nice to know my own observations are shared. The community there is great.

I almost started a Lore-Master , but was so used to being the standard Tank role. I might have to re-think it now, as you are not the first to suggest it.

I am usually range magic when I play MMOs. :)) Do you have any suggestions for tanks? I have a Rune-Master 17, a Minstrel 19, and 51 Lore-Master. Sadly we are not on the same server. :(

LOL well for WOW, I could write a book on tanking, but with LOTR, not that much.

I do know that my instant aggro grabs come in very handy when pulling off the healers, but that is pretty much true for any MMORPG.

To be honest, For most games, one can run with just two classes, Tank and heals. The ranged DPS or any DPS for that matter helps the fights go faster, and of course there are situations that very much call for them.

What I do know as far as the guardian class, and my low level, is get as many deeds done as you can, esp. Class deeds. Things like head butt (yeah I know coming from a butthead.) helps when disarmed.

A friend of mine, who is a 39 hunter took me into a zone the other day, that was high 30's. (I'll hit tier 5 Prospecting before I hit lvl 30 I fear.), and he was collecting bandannas from these rogues.

I had to back off some, as I was stealing his aggro. (he is a hunter no less.) No it wasn't because of my level either, I would wait for him to attack, then go in, and boom , mobs loved me.

Get the best quest armor and heavy shield you can find. Right now I stack Morale and in combat Morale regeneration. Always protect the healer, even if you loose aggro from mob two to a DPS, keep the mobs off the healer.

Now like I said, With WoW, I can go into much more depth, but with LOTR, Heck I'm still learning.

I'd love to try LOTR to see if I would enjoy it. I couldn't get into WoW, but maybe I can get into LOTR since I'm such a big fan of the books and movies.

They have a free trial you can download.

It is my understanding that the landscape, cities and lore are very true to the books.

This week they are selling Mines of Moria for 10 bucks. Digitial download of course.

Add to that 10 bucks per month.

I really hope this is not taken as a promotion, but as information. If It is the former , I apologize right off the bat.

LOL hoobeedoo, You might be right.

Tank = the guy who holds aggro.
Heal = The guy who heals the party (mostly the tank if he does his job right.)
DPS = Damage per second.

Aggro = MAking sure the enemy focuses on you, and you alone, leaving every one else alone.

Others that I didn't mention.

CC = Crowd control, at times one might need to Sheep, confuse, make the mob attack there own, etc. etc.

DOT = Damage over time.

Most fights in a MMORPG are like this. The tank rushes in, grabs aggro Given my satcon, It takes me a few more seconds to make sure, no one else gets hit.

The main healer will concentrate on me, the tank. Helps keep me standing, so the DPS who does more damage , can take the bad guys out.

Many DPS classes also have another thing going on, called buffs, or debuffs.

These are situational +'s or -'s to ones abilities.

The game looks beautiful, but I have a long-standing dislike for pay-to-play games and this has affected my experiences with MMOs. Comes with the territory of being a broke college student, I guess. Still, I'd take the visuals of LOTR over WOWs any day.

I played WoW for many years and have characters on many servers but i switched to LOTRO when it first came out and have now played solidly for over a year.

3 60's on Gladden server. We have the best Kin out there - Legacy.

I like LOTRO because the story is solid and the community in my opinion is much better than WoW. WoW is a great game, don't get me wrong but I really love LOTRO. The bookline from Shadows of Angmar was just superior and the quests were awesome. The community is generally helpful, especially to new players and it's pretty easy to find groups.

LOTRO is more about the journey than the destination (although the Mines of Moria did definitely tilt more to end game stuff - a mistake in my opinion..)

But overall it's jut great.

Most difficult class to learn? - I would say Captain. But an awesome class once you learn it.
Most fun class? - Burglar. What a hoot. They are the best at the solo game in my opinion and their skills really shine in all aspects of the game and their debuffing of mobs is the best bar none.
Most needed class? - I would say still the Minstrel. All around the healer of choice and fun as heck to play also.
Massive damage output? - champion. Great at aoe and fun for just slicing through stuff
tanking?- Guardian. Still a strong glass and great to have in small groups as well as raids. They can take a ton of damage and still stand. I love havinga guard to heal when i'm healing on my minstrel.
Multitasking your thing? - Loremaster. Can be a difficult class to learn and it's sort of hard to solo with them at first, but man they are very needed
in groups because they are the "assist King" when it comes to helping out the group.
Single target dps? - hunter is still the king here. Good class to learn on and very much needed. Fun to just burn em down.
The two remaining classes are the Warden and Rune keeper. Right now Runekeepers are right up there with Champs in DPS and are a heck of a versatile class because they can also heal. Great class (but to me lore breaking but that's another issue). The Warden is also awesome and although not high on the DPS chart their ability to heal over time and put up damage over time is great. And besides as spear wielders they are just a blast to play.

Anyway, that's my take on the toons. See you in game!

Oh. and Hobbits FTW! :)

Hey, I have a question for you folks here...

I play WoW, and would like to try LOTRO. If in uninstall WoW but keep my account current with them, can I re-install the game later if I don't like LOTRO, without losing may char or stats?

How much is LOTRO/month?

Yes, you can do that. Even if you cancel WoW for a few months and then go back, your characters will still be there.

Uninstalling WoW will not cancel your account though, you will still be changed unless you go to their site and cancel.

I bought the boxed version of LOTRO for $19.99, first month was free. Month to month I think it is $15.99 but they have a 3 month deal for about $30 bucks, thats what I went with.

No worries Hoobee, it's in the works....

Ok, so finals will be over in about three days for me and I have a question....

I love MMOs... I played WoW ever since Molten COre days but I eventually had to stop due to time ( GG engineering major )

Well when I had down time I'd play a few games here and there mostly puzzle games but nothing really holds my interest and trying to keep up with my RPG appetite is SO expensive.

Long story short I'm looking for an MMO that I can play casually.

Has WoW taken a more casual turn, and is that my way to go?

Also, any tips on time mangement?

I have not - I'll look into it. Thanks.

And I'm also weird in why I like a game. I like MMOs for the fact that it never really ends and that I am done with the game when I feel like it - not when you kill the final boss (i.e. Final Fantasy). When I kill a giant or a dragon I plan on getting ready for the next bigger, badder guy to come along :3 and I like the immersion that comes along with MMOs.

WoW has started to cater to the casual gamer a bit more than they have been. They have quite a few 5/10/20 man instances that can be done. Of course they still have the full on 40 man content as well if you have the time.

There isn't one. That's it. There are several fun higher level ones as well. The "well-travelled" one you get in Moria for jumping down the well that goes from Chamber of Crossroads and goes all the way to the bottom of the zone in Waterworks. If you survive without dying you get that title. Also, there is "ridge racer" which you get in Eregion for finding your way along the mountain tops of that zone. Both are great titles.

Oh and also if you do the various quests in the shire inns you get "shire brewmaster". I use that title a lot..
