Swine flu a smoke screen or the real deal, Pandemic or Pantomime?

Greetings all,

I am battling to figure this one out. Is the Swine flu that is emerging from Mexico the real deal; meaning the start of a global pandemic that can wipe out millions of people. Or is it a minor virus that has been blown out of proportion by governments for political objectives; for example to distract attention away from other events such as the economy and the torture scandal?

For me two factors will suggest that it is the start of a real global Pandemic and not a minor variant that has caused deaths in Mexico. One, if the death toll rapidly increases in Mexico to thousands, and two if fatalities emerge from swine flu in western countries even after medication has been given.

I guess they have a different way of welcoming new guests in your town. In my town we welcome them in a non-aggressive manner, and show them kindness.

Smoke screen. Until I see the amount of deaths increasing as more vectors(people) spread it around from one to two people and on and on to their friends. Intill, I see that then this is nothing more then a minor virus. Also it can be treated. The world is freaking out over something that can be stopped.

The thing that confuses me is is on one hand the WHO through the media is reporting that this outbreak has the potential to be a world wide pandemic and on the other hand is claiming that there is no need to restrict movement of people to affected areas becuase the flu can not be contained. Surely, rational dictates that limiting the movement of people to affected areas will slow the spread of swine flu. Furthermore, considering the WHO's claim that a 'swine flu vaccine could be ready between four to six months' it makes more sense to limit movement and thus slow the spread of the flu. What is going on are we all be duped?

They do, but global Pandemics have also occurred.

No, one of the signs you look for is that the overall amount of vectors(people) are increasing. See One person spreads it to 10 people and each one of those people spreads it to 10 more people, and on and on. A healthy Pandemic virus is NOT going to decrease its cases over the last 3 days from 140+ to 115 cases. It is not going to go down, at the very least a Pandemic is going to double if not tripple.

Also this viruses effectiveness of killing people out side of Mexico is also not what a Pandemic makes.

Obama is a idiot and is playing with fire. Yes there is a chance that this could go all the way if it changed into a more effective/deadly, in which it can do so. Obama could get millions killed, but I would say it is less then 1 and 15 that this virus will do so. He should be closing the borders and taking steps just in case. Worst case or not.

Good point, something I never considered thank you. And it does suggest this is not a major incident. However, on the other hand it could be the case that the Mexicans are suppressing the true numbers.

Cav if it a break man. Not one of those topics is a Poll to see if people consider Swine flu a real threat or not. Man who rocked your boat?
