LOS ANGELES – Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.

Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side, family spokesman Dan Watt said. She had cancer, Watt said, declining to give further details.

Maude was a spin-off from All in the Family.

Her first appearance on "All in the Family" was hilarious. She bossed around bossy Archie. He had the runs, so she gave him "cream of wheat with cheese - it's light but it binds".

I think she was a Lesbian.

RIP

She was actually very funny, and a good actress.

(Yes - I still say "actress.")

R.I.P. Ms. Arthur, who I'm sure was a fine actress who took too many masculinity jokes for no good reason.

Still, Maude was a terribly overrated character and show that served little excuse other than for Norman Lear way to combine liberal preachiness with female sassiness and pile on his father by proxy, Archie Bunker.

I loved the back and forth between her and Carrol O'Connor on All in the Family. Some of the best written T.V. ever. Rest in Peace Bea.

Loved All in the Family, loved Maude, too for the above reasons. The interaction was priceless.

God bless, Bea. Thank you for everything.

Why wont you watch All In The Family?

I knew overbearing browbeating bigots.

I knew ditsy cow towing apologetic wives.

I knew bleeding heart kumbayah whiners.

These sort of people were not pleasant to be around in real life and I just never had any desire to watch their worst character traits showcased on TV.

I had no problems with the actors except for perhaps their doing too good a job.

I also hate the Honeymooners show for some of the same reasons.

It is just ugly TV to me on a personal level.

Hard for me to explain.

Why do you think that?

Maybe not.

Arthur was married twice, first to Robert Alan Aurthur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Alan_Aurthur), a screenwriter, television, and film producer and director, whose surname she took and kept (though with a modified spelling), and second to director Gene Saks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Saks) from 1950 to 1978 with whom she adopted two sons, Matthew (born July 14, 1961), an actor, and Daniel (born May 8, 1964), a set designer.

All adoptions, huh? I wonder if those guys found her sexy?

She was very active with the homosexual community as a supporter..

It was the last TV sitcom that ever had me rolling on the floor. It was NOT PC and NEVER could get on the air today. It was iconoclastic and fearless.

Unlike "Seinfeld" the people were not hateful, not entirely. Even bigot Archie loved Edith a lot.

Maybe you like self-important smug liberal MASH.
