MEXICO CITY — A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.
It might already be too late to contain the outbreak, a prominent U.S. pandemic flu expert said late Friday.

Given how quickly flu can spread around the globe, if these are the first signs of a pandemic, then there are probably cases incubating around the world already, said Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota.

In Mexico City, "literally hundreds and thousands of travelers come in and out every day," Osterholm said. "You'd have to believe there's been more unrecognized transmission that's occurred."

More legal Americans will visit Mexico and come back that may spread this disease than Mexicans who cross illegally into the U.S.

Most illegal immigrants living and working in the U.S. do not travel back and forth into Mexico.

Knowing who enters or leaves our borders can not possibly affect the spread of diseases unless there is a way to test for diseases carried at our checkpoints, something we don't currently do.

Controlling which people have a legal basis for being in one area or not has little to do with the spread of diseases. Why would someone think that it does anyway?

Every person who enters the country (including returning Americans) should be quarantined for 6 months. Also if you visit or live in any border state and wish to travel to the inner states you must do a 30 day quarantine at an inner checkpoint and validation facility.

Not shut down. But heavily screened. I really don't expect much else from the open borders crowd. They didn't care when they were bringing across drug-resistant tuberculosis and whatever other diseases that are prevalent in that country across the border. Why should this be any different?

This administration is more concerned with demonizing military veterans who have served this country faithfully, than addressing the illegal alien criminal and health issues that are the actual threat to this country.

Those idiots would rather listen in on my phone calls than pay attention to the unidentified individuals pouring into this country.
