This one has pre and post performance interviews and the full song. It is a truly amazing performance. No matter what, Susan Boyle's life is about to change in very big and hopefully very positive ways, there is just no putting that cat back in the bag.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY
But this little six year old girl gives her a run for the money with a stunning rendition of "Somewhere over the rainbow" that would make Judy Garland proud and reduced Amanda Holden to tears.

The cynicism of music marketing. One must have youth, beauty AND a voice to be a package. You must have fashion sense and an ability to move it. Right? For the most part, it's unfortunately right. We never have the opportunity to see anyone else that may have extraordinary talent because they lack a piece of the total picture.
So I load it up this am to see if I still felt the same way about this woman that I did yesterday. I turn it on, she starts to sing, and tears start streaming down my face.
I read about her yesterday and the song choice is not only perfect for her voice, but for her story. And the more I read about her story, the more that I want her to win. Not about the competition, but in life, somehow.
She touches a nerve. And considering the reaction that she's having (her video on youtube has now surpassed five million views), I'm not alone in that sentiment.

No offense, but I don't see why people get so worked up about singers. I would much rather see a virtuoso musician play something on an actual instrument than watch some singer sing a simplistic and predictable Broadway song.
I think mastering an instrument (playing rock/pop music isn't mastering anything) requires FAR FAR more developed/learned skill than singing. To put it simply, singing is more about lucking out in the gene pool than working hard when compared to playing an instrument. Some of my favorite musicians such as Virgil Donati practice 10+ hours a day to be able to pull off some of their material. I mean, these musicians are playing things in odd and shifting meters, playing in multiple time signatures simultaneously, and using a really diverse and complex set of chords and scales. And they do it all flawlessly, meaning they can often track a CD quality take on the first attempt, unlike the VAST VAST majority of pro singers.
I have yet to hear a singer (excluding those who sing while playing an instrument) do anything comparable to that as far as skill is concerned, they aren't even in the same league in my mind. It seems if you have decent pitch, can project your voice and hit high notes, and make a decent song choice, that is all you need as a singer.
PS - I know people here will respond with subjective nonsense such as "music isn't a sport etc, it is about emotion etc". My response is, technique, creativity and emotion aren't mutually exclusive when it comes to music. I prefer musicians who excel at every aspect of music.

Her performance was breathtaking, and I love seeing people who were previously unknown sparkle.
The judges reactions were awful.
Oh my gosh, she's not young, and pretty, but she has a TALENT, amazing!

The song itself, and the rendition were beautiful however. I love the song, and I love what she brought to it.

Which is utterly ridiculous, but I think the tide is slowly shifting (this is, I think, part of the reason the Indie music scene has started growing). When I attend a concert, or buy a CD, I couldn't care less how the artist looks.

true. me too i got that preconceived notion before i heard susan boyle sing. i thought it was going to end up like how that chinese guy from american idol ended up.
but now it got me curious... i'm hoping susan boyle would sing 'Memory' from 'Cats' next time in britain's got talent which was sung by Elaine Paige during her stint as Grizabella.

Susan Boyle brought me lots of good memories when Cats and Les Miserables were still around lol. too bad the only play worth watching in broadway now is Phantom of the Opera.
i hope with susan boyle, the musicals that i really like such as Cats, Les Miserables, and even Beauty and the Beast would return in Broadway. the other plays are mediocre at best.

thinking about it... now with a renewed interest sparked by Susan Boyle with her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream, hopefully some of the great Broadway plays would return.
I would pretty much like to see Susan Boyle play Grizabella in the return of 'Cats' in Broadway. if Susan Boyle was able to pull off I Dreamed a Dream, with coaching and training, Susan Boyle, imho, can have a better rendition. these plays that would return like Les Miserables and Cats would have in their interests to cast Susan Boyle and more people would be interested in seeing these musicals. God I hope Les Miserables and Cats return.... i miss them.

Ok, it will require 3 applications (technically only 2, one is just an add-on) to do it, but it isn't too hard.
1) Download and install the Mozilla Firefox browser if you haven't already, here is the link
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
2) Download the "DownloadHelper" extension for firefox. Basically, open up Firefox and click on the "add to firefox" button on the following webpage...
http://www.downloadhelper.net/install.php
After it is installed, when you watch the movie on Youtube in firefox, you will have a little icon you can click on to save the .flv file to your hard drive. Note: You usually won't see download progress until the movie is fully loaded or you close your browser.
3) Download Goldwave to convert the .flv file into an .mp3. Basically, once you have Goldwave installed, open up the .flv file you just downloaded. Once it is open, you can "save as" .mp3 to your hard drive. From there it should be easy to get it on your IPOD.

Interesting editorial on the whole thing in The Guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/apr/16/britains-got-talent-susan-boyle
Tanya Gold asks "Is Susan Boyle ugly? Or are we?"
Why are we so shocked when "ugly" women can do things, rather than sitting at home weeping and wishing they were somebody else? Men are allowed to be ugly and talented. Alan Sugar looks like a burst bag of flour. Gordon Ramsay has a dried-up riverbed for a face. Justin Lee Collins looks like Cousin It from The Addams Family. Graham Norton is a baboon in mascara. I could go on. But a woman has to have the bright, empty beauty of a toy - or get off the screen. We don't want to look at you. Except on the news, where you can weep because some awful personal tragedy has befallen you.

You are totally off base if you think I require someone to wear makeup "to match your (my) preferences"? News flash - I never wear makeup myself and even when I was younger I used very little makeup. My point was that if Ms. Boyle wishes to become a performer, perhaps even be in a musical show, she will of course not look the same as she does now. All performers wear makeup when on the stage because of the intense lighting.

No kidding. Someone showed me a clip of this on their laptop - and I thought it was a joke video and some sort of special effects with her mouth matching the music. (started the the clip after she already started singing).
But now - I am a Susan Boyle fan.
There will be hell to pay if Britains Got Talent is not simulcasted in the United States. I never gave a damn for any episode of American Idol, and in fact, never watched more then 5 minutes of any episode, and I never will in the future - but this particular woman and the initial expectations conditioned into viewers make this special. If it is not simulcasted, I will have to hunt down torrent files of the show. I will watch this years season of Britains Got Talent no matter what.
I have counted over 37.5 million youtube clip views.

Of course. My voice teacher and I have talked about makeup and I've used makeup in some photo ops I've had with others, such as Ann Coulter, because of the bright lights. The makeup deadens the lights of even flashes, which is crucial.
You look at Chris Wallace of Fox News and see how much makeup he wears on-air.
But one more thing caught me "after further review" -- singers are not to be amplified! That's another rule I seemingly need to remember! That, of course, comes from experience of working with live musicians at a lesson with my teacher!
As for broadcast information, you should call RTL, the German television network that owns the Got Talent, Idols/X Factor, Family Feud/Fortunes, and The Price Is Right franchises. I don't know if you'd ask Drew to have her as a "theme" for a Showcase on Price, but what would you think if Drew had Susan as a Showcase theme . . . trip to Britain, Les Miz tickets, and a Mini? Drew might even be thinking of such a Showcase with her, considering what we've seen him do with Price's showcases.

Your friend at work is wrong, there is nothing stopping you from downloading the videos from youtube and converting them. In fact, if you watched the video you already have a copy of the file on your hard drive in the internet cache. It just isn't very convenient to find and get to.
I have countless videos from youtube on my hard drive that I can watch and convert etc. I even tested it on this specific video and I am 100% sure it works.
1) If you can't open the .flv file directly, it is probably because you don't have a .flv player. The open source (meaning free) VLC player will do the job. Here is a link...
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
2) Goldwave, the program I talked about previously, will open the .flv files as well, but only the audio portion. Open up goldwave first. Once it is open, click on "file" menu on the top left and click "open" and select the .flv file in question. After you have the file audio opened up in goldwave, you can click "file" and then "save as". The "save as type" drop down menu will allow you to choose a file format such as .mp3.

Ya, that works too. I used it in the past but prefer downloadhelper because it takes fewer clicks to save the file. Also, dh seems to have a larger list of sites it is compatible with ( at least when I last used keepvid).

 Sure and You are wrong on every level. I have played piano for 27 years, guitar for 17 years, drums for 16 year and Brass for 25 years and playing an instrument takes a lot of practice. Not everyone can sing either and takes alot of time to perfect it and sorry but very few are born with it. Most of the crap on the radio is fixed in studio but I'm guessing you know this. You think this lady just woke up one day sounding like that? I don't think so Tim. She has SKILL and just as much as any musician. If you think singing is an easy skill, go on there and compete.

Susan Boyle was absolutely brilliant I agree, watching it Saturday I was like many who judged her for the way she looked, learnt my lesson there.
How about these guys, I know it's not singing but again when I first them I thought Oh they're to overweight to dance.

I loved her singing, but these two dancing was absolutely hysterical if you have ever seen Michael Flatly dancing. Once again the Brits way outdo America with their shows. I wish American Idol was more like Britains Got Talent.

 Sure and You are wrong on every level.
You addressed none of the points I made with anything substantive. Your only attempt at an actual argument was a fallacious appeal to authority (yourself).
I have played piano for 27 years, guitar for 17 years, drums for 16 year and Brass for 25 years and playing an instrument takes a lot of practice.
1) I know people who have played an instrument for numerous years and flat out suck, so I really could care less how long you have played instrument X. A lot of people never push themselves or practice properly and get stuck in a rut. Someone like Keith Richards is a fine example, years and years of professional experience and he is still a horrible musician who has the most basic understanding of music theory.
2) Even if you are the best musician in the world, you have to provide reasons why my arguments are wrong to refute them. You failed to do that. You could start by showing me a vocalist who is capable of singing in two distinct time signatures simultaneously, or possibly a vocalist who is able to employ metric modulation into their performance.
Not everyone can sing either and takes alot of time to perfect it and sorry but very few are born with it.
Not everyone can sing because they weren't born with the right vocal chords etc. Some people will never be able to sing well no matter how much effort or training. With an instrument, it is possible to achieve some success even if you weren't born with musical gifts.
Hard work impresses me much more than genetic gifts.
Most of the crap on the radio is fixed in studio but I'm guessing you know this.
I don't listen to music on the radio, I prefer classical, jazz, fusion, and progressive music etc. Most of the musicians I listen to don't cheat in the studio either, especially considering the small budget they have and the way it is recorded. I have also seen many of my favorite musicians at clinics where they were playing without a backing track or effects, and they still performed flawlessly.
You think this lady just woke up one day sounding like that? I don't think so Tim. She has SKILL and just as much as any musician.
1) She has skill, but not enough to deserve the amount of praise she has received imo. For example, if an equally skilled musician played the vocal part she sang on a violin, no one would have gone crazy. In fact, they probably would have been bored because the exact same peace of music would sound simplistic and repetitive when played with a violin. My point is, if you throw in human vocals people always think more of the performance than they should.
2) By saying "She has SKILL and just as much as any musician" you are implying she is the best musician in the world. She would have to be if she had just as much skill as anyone. That is something I find laughable, I don't even think most of her fans would say she is the best in the world.
If you think singing is an easy skill, go on there and compete.
That is an ad hominem, I don't have to be a singer or even a musician (even though I am) to make legitimate criticisms about singers. Again, I think singing is an innate skill that doesn't require much acquired skill when compared to mastering an instrument. Innate talent isn't that impressive to me, I am more of a fan of people who worked harder to achieve their talent.

So in other words, your opinion means nothing. I think you know very little about music and it's funny. :boohoo: please tell me you're 13 years old.You addressed none of the points I made with anything substantive. My apologies. I took your tone to be going a different direction. Yes of course, everyone on stage wears makeup. I have some shots of myself in pretty heavy stage makeup, it's odd stuff to see close up.No problem. The written word is often difficult to interpret as opposed to actual speech.
