So yesterday my wife was out front and she found a tiny 1-2 week old kitten that was crying for it's mom which I think the mom left him. So she brings him inside and I'm like. Oh No. I don't want another cat. So this thing is crying to all heaven and then she gives it to me and it calms down. trys to nurse on my arm. So we get some formula "Not a good idea but we have nothing else and we'll get stuff for it today" and I use a syringe and feed it and it loved it. After it ate it curls up on my lap and falls asleep. I get a box and make a nice comfy spot for him and he slept all night.

Why is it that when you don't want an animal they seem to want to attach themselves to you. Anyone want a baby kitten?

There's kitten formula available at Petsmart or Petco, it's more appropriate than baby formula. (You may be able to get it from the Humane Society at a cheaper price, I don't know.)

I'd take it, but hubby would kill me.

Do you have a heating pad wrapped in a towel in the box? (Or some other way for the kitten to keep warm?) They can't really regulate their temperature at that age. So the heating pad needs to be on one side and there needs to be a non-heated spot on the other side. It's a lot of work, it'll need to be fed every few hours--they're more work than an infant without a mama cat around. If you have a food scale, check his weight. Check again tonight to make sure he's not losing weight.

Ah how sweet Notz.

We have raised a few very young kittens over the years. One of the best cats I've ever had was a feral newborn that was left without a mom because she had been trapped.

The kitten formula is a must. While your wife is going to the pet shop today, she may want to consider a bottle. It will make feeding the kitten much simpler.

Also, they have a great deal of trouble regulating their body temperature when they are very young. A heating pad (that doesn't automatically shut off) or a hot water bottle tucked under a towel will help keep the little guy warm and toasty.

We have always made them a little home inside a pet carrier. They seem to feel safer that way. They realize that everything in the world is much bigger than them so they do appreciate having a safe place to hide out and get some sleep.

Good luck with your new found friend.

Kitties instinctively know who to suck up to. :))

They are a lot of work.

When I found Mouki last year, about four to five weeks old, he wouldn't settle down in a box I made up for him with fresh soft towels after I would feed him.

Even though he was crashing in my hand when I would put him down in the box he would begin screaming again.

That went on longer than I care to remember then it finally hit me what it was, when I picked him up and held him close he immediately quieted.

I took my shirt off and laid it out nest like on top of the towels and placed him in the middle and he went right to sleep.

The smell of my shirt was comforting to him.

My rescue kitty from last year in September is now nearly as big as the 7 year old cats we have.

He is yin and yang with a bullet.

He is either up on my chest in my arms quietly snuggled under my chin or down on the floor ripping my ankle to shreds, then BAM off like greased lightning down the hall to seek his next victim.

I just hope nobody drops off any strays this year and that the garage cats have smal litters.

Good luck with your little kitty!

My dad was just like you when mom found a baby kitten on the road last summer. He didn't want another cat either, but has now accepted that this kitten is part of the family, and he and the dog are best friends. Although I think dad's gonna kill him if he sets the house alarm off at 4 am again, but that's a whole other story.

You might be able to get kitten formula from your vet. I don't know if yours sells it or not but we got that kind of stuff from the vet, along with medicine and other things our kitty needed. Doesn't sound like its old enough to eat even the wet kitten food, but that's what we started our kitten out on. Talking to the vet would be your best bet though.

Our thanks to you guys for taking care of the kitten. It's always refreshing and encouraging to learn there's still some kindness in this world and that not everyone is a selfish barbarian.

We have seven cats. We recently took in a starving stray mama cat and her three little waifs.

Also don't forget that if the kitten is really young, and wasnt with the mother for very long you might have to help it "learn" to go potty. Momma cats do this by licking the area in question, but you can take a warm rag or a cottonball and gingerly wipe it across its business end to produce the same effect.

Kind of like the old "sticking your hand in warm water" gag! LOL

Wal Mart carries kitten formula.

Ours gave me free non needle syringes and large droppers for feeding Mouki.

Iv had to 'stimulate' many a kitten that way, after the momma rejected them...

its not really that bad, /Iv even helped momma cats, 'birth' their babies, many, many mommas over the years/
one cat I helped had 8 kittens, it took 12 hours for her to birth them all;
