View Full Version : Is it possible to be addicted to staying up late?

Lately I've found myself staying up later and later, checking e-mail, browsing web forums and playing goofy online games. I'm not doing anything in particular, and it's not necessarily a web addiction (I also watch movies and read at night) but it seems difficult for me to talk myself into slowing down enough to go to sleep, particularly when I don't have anything going on the next morning. When I try to go to bed at a reasonable hour my brain is hyperactive and I can't relax enough to nod off.

My question: Do you think it's possible to be addicted to staying up late? Obviously I'm not referring to a chemical addiction but a habit I'm ingraining into my brain. Has anybody else experienced the same thing?

Might just be the "Night Owl" in you. I like to stay up until 2 am (well okay I'm on graveyards right now so I don't get to bed until 7am). For me, the best sleep I get is from 4 am to 9 or 10 am.

Easter Weekend was perfect for me. I didn't get back to my hotel room until 3 am had an hour cool down watching mindless dribble on the tube, then slept perfect from 4 am till noon.

YES, it is an addiction. I suffered from this myself several years back. I used to go on after the 11 o'clock news and stay on for hours. Once I finally realized it (on my own -since I'm not a Dem) I made a conscious effort to stop. It took me several months but I made it.

It's a behavior pattern, and a very unhealthy one. I've gotten caught up in staying up late for the last few years. More recently my health is taking quite a hit from it. I'm trying to break the habit and go to be by 10 every night. I'd hard to break.

While you might not be using the computer all the time to stay up late they contribute greatly to the brain disturbances that cause insomnia. So does watching TV. It's best to turn off the screens (computer or TV), and to put down the books at least 1/2 hour before you want to go to sleep. Take that half hour to do something that calms the brain... like have some sleepytime tea, take a bath, etc.

Other things taht can contribute: Are you drinking anything with cafine after 6pm? this can contribute too. Any lights on at night can keep your body from making melatonine... the chemical that makes you sleepy. If you want to use a night light.. use a red light... that does not disturb sleep.

I have gone to a sleep clinic to help me change my habits... there is a lot of info on the web about how to break this habit.

Depending upon the persons age it could be a completely natural sleep pattern.

Yes, I have the same problem. If I try to go to sleep before 2-4am my mind just keeps racing and racing and I cant get to sleep. So far the Drs have put me on 6 different pills to try to get to sleep. None work after the 1st week.

I am going crazy. I have had insomnia for 11 years, but its only recently became unbearable. I am lost as to what to do.. so are the doctors.

You need to be arrested and sent to treatment for your addiction. In the meantime, you will be subject to asset forfeiture if your addiction has taken place in your home, you will lose your job and your character will be assassinated in the local newspaper.

Thank you and have a nice day.

A few Benadryls or 1 blunt.

Either will put you to sleep within the hour. ;)

A'ight - I'll have to make a concerted effort to go to bed earlier. No computer after midnight oughta help. I'll have to hit a definite bedtime of 1:00 or so and move it back to midnight which is reasonable. I just don't want to waste my time doing stupid stuff on my computer instead of studying, working, dating, etc. I'm not sure what being a Democrat or watching the Daily Show has to do with it ;).

This forum moves very quickly compared to other forums I've visited. It's really, really huge. It's going to take a little effort to stay on top of my conversations :).
