MOMBASA, Kenya - U.S. forces freed an American ship captain and killed three of his captors Sunday in a daring rescue that ended a five-day standoff between the world's most powerful navy and Somali pirates in a lifeboat far off the Horn of Africa.

Capt. Richard Phillips was in "imminent danger" of being killed before snipers shot the pirates in an operation authorized by President Barack Obama, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said.

He said the pirates were armed with AK-47s and small-caliber pistols and were pointing the rifles at the captain when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge gave the order to open fire.

Got to hand it to those snipers, hitting a target ia covered boat floating on choppy waters.

Today is another day to feel proud of being an American.

Personally I think they should have immediately freed the 4th poor repressed economically disadvantaged youth (pirate). They should have zip tied his hands shoved him over board and given him a chance to swim the several hundred miles back to shore.

Our navy should attack and destroy the bases these pirates are operating from and stop reacting to their moves.

Get pro-active and save lives.

BTW, a friend who should know told me that Maerkle denied the crewmen the right to carry arms due to the INSURANCE for guns being too steep. It is cheaper to have ransom insurance instead and so they told the crew that they could not bear arems in these dangerous straights.

That is an example of how insurance companies can determine social behavior and why it troubles me so much that the Feds control AIG.

That is bad voodoo.

The lifeboat was under tow by the Destroyer (reportedly to move it out of choppy water that was making life on board miserable) and it was only about 30-35 yards from the stern. The pirates had to have exposed themselves or the snipers would not have been able to shoot them in the head. The fourth pirate was on-board the Destroyer seeking medical help for his injured hand (injured by the Captain during the hijacking of the Alabama.)

Still... a good days work.

Interesting details, none of which diminish the amazing work of our Navy Seals, no?
