The Sportsman's Warehouse in Alaska only has 20% of hand guns left!
And very little or NO ammo left!

Maybe we put guns in our Easter Baskets these days? :))

The Sportsman's Warehouse in Fairbanks still has a fair selection of handguns and long guns, but they have essentially been out of ammunition and reloading components since late October. They do get small random selection shipments in about once a week, but it is gone within hours of hitting the shelf. All they have on the shelves is shotgun ammo, high-end personal protection & hunting ammo and a few odd caliber bullets, a little shotgun powder and shotgun primers. I have been buying my bullets from Midway, but ammo, powder and primers is a real problem for us up here.

It is no wonder that the parent company is going bankrupt... they could be making a fortune if they would properly stock their stores. The discouraging lack of shooting supplies keeps a lot of customers out of the store who would be buying other stuff too.

Ammo in Virginia is harder to come by.

I had to get my 30-06 ammo at a Walmart after trying at several places and I got the last three boxes.

Sportsman's warehouse is closing or selling off 38 stores, including the two in my state of Wi.

ETA: They are not discounting any guns, nor amo. Thy plan to ship what is left to remaining stores when the store close-outs end at the end of April.

We were in Wal-Mart last night buying fishing supplies and looked at their ammo selection while we were there. They only had two boxes of ammo for handguns; both were Winchester .357 SIG. Almost all of their shotgun ammo was 12 gauge, but they did have some 410 shells for my son's gun that he uses to kill snakes. The guy in sporting goods said they sell the handgun ammo as fast as they put it on the shelf.

Supply lagging behind demand. I hope.

I remember reading online that gun sales soared nationwide after Obama took office (but "illegally," John? Care to back that up?). I think anybody could have predicted that outcome, particularly in a state like Alaska that's particularly focused on gun rights.

You buy things you want before they become scarce. When a guy enters office who leans toward gun control (whether or not it'll actually happen), you might get that rifle you've been putting off :). It's perfectly human.

The SW nearest me has been low on ammo and other related items since at least the first of the year do to the chains financial problems. Last time I was in they only had ammo for oddball calibers, had two pounds of gun powder and no bullets in any popular calibers or weights.

You are correct. Shortages perpetuate shortages. When the rush last fall wiped out ammunition inventories, people seeing the empty shelves said to themselves... "I better buy up everything I can whenever I get the chance." Some people are buying hugh amounts of ammo... far beyond what they previously would have ever considered necessary simply because there is an apparent shortage.

Take for instance this notice I got from CMP a couple of days ago:

.30-06 M2 BALL PURCHASE LIMITS ESTABLISHED. Effective immediately, CMP is setting a purchase limit for items 407-CAN (.30-06 M2 Ball, HXP, clipped, in spam cans) and 407DCAN (.30-06 M2 Ball, clipped, in .30 cal ammo can). The new purchase limit is total of 10 cans of HXP ammo per year, per customer, regardless of item numbers ordered.

Ten cans of clipped 30-06 ammo is 1920 rounds. Hardly anyone shoots that much 30-06 in a year, yet they would not be setting a limit if some customers were not buying more than that.

It is no wonder that Obama has been honored as Employee of the Month at most gun/ammo stores since last November. ;)

You are right that SW's financial problems are affecting their low and sporadic inventory, but the problem is much more wide spread... ammo and components are hard to come by everywhere in all stores... even on-line outlets like Midway.

I do hope though, that after SW reorganizes that things will begin to recover as far as their stores specifically are concerned. We have been told that "our" store is not being closed and that inventory from the closing stores will be distributed to the remaing stores. They also say that reorganization will free up cash to begin building up inventory again.

But the abnormal demand is making it very hard on ammo manufacturers... I have read that they are double shifting at most plants and still cannot keep up.

On a side note... one of the other phenomenon resulting from empty ammo shelves is that people are shooting less because they are afraid of depleting their supply when it is not clear whether it can be replaced. I definitely fit into that category. I had plenty of ammo and components on hand last fall when this all started and I have barely fired a round since.
