This isn't a crazy notion. It's quite common in Austria, and Germany.

Heretical countries all!

Seriously though, a bunny tree sounds so weird to me. Almost like the proverbial jack-o-lope in Texas.

Does the tree grow bunnies or do they climb up their to nest and lay eggs like a bird, or what?

Sounds interesting.

I don't know exactly why anyone started hanging eggs from trees. It seems to be a common practice in Germanic countries since they also are the originators of decorating x-mas trees.

However, you are right in calling parts of it heretic.

The Bunny and eggs ritualized in our celebration of easter have origins from pagan religions celebrating fertility in the spring that were present long before christianity was present in Europe.

It's commonly assumed that Christians actually mixed the two together to get pagans to also celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

And lets face it. Christians don't have anything against making babies.

Well, the ones of us who will still be around in a couple of centuries dont.
