View Full Version : What goals have you set for yourself in 2009?

What personal goals have you made in 2009? If you have made goals for yourself, have you seen positive results (in whatever way) to that end?
Often times, we are apt to set lofty goals for ourselves. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. At the same time, if we are not careful, we can view the end result as unattainable, because we look to the end, instead of seeing each step of our journey for the opportunity that it is, an opportunity to grow, instead of opportunity to fail.
It doesn't matter if others may view your personal goals as inconsequential or superficial. What matters, is how you see yourself in relation to those goals.
The hardest step to take is the first one, in my opinion.

spend less time in Hansterland...
especially in the wee hours of the morning...
when I seem to get myself into the most trouble...
lol...

Spend less time in Hansterland... lol...
lol And how is that working out for you Bill? Why do you feel a need to do that? Is it a matter of balance?

It's definately a matter of balence, BGG...
All of the time I spend in here represents time I could have (and probably should have) spent with my family, or at work, or sleeping, or doing any of a number of the many mundane tasks that require my attention...
On the other hand...
In my younger days, I used to hang out in bars after a hard day's work
and shoot the breeze for hours with my fellow bar denizens...
Spending time here in Hansterland reminds of nothing so much as that...
I no longer hang out in bars.
but I still work hard and, at the end of the day,
I think I deserve being able to spend time in here with my Hansterland buddies.

Makes sense to me. :)

The first step is the most difficult indeed! (Cue "Put one Foot in Front of the Other".) The first step, for me was deciding that alcohol no longer had a place in my life. I have since developed an intense and authentic appreciation of all of God's blessings. It may sound simple but it has been one of the greatest experiences I have had in life.
I pray God blesses you on your personal journey with your goals. Care to share?

1) To not over-analyze so much. I have made great headway as it were in this department. I am happy with the progress I have made, but I am still not were I think I can and should be. It is a daily process, in my opinion. I have a very analytical mind and it can get me into trouble at times.
2) One of the goals that I have always wanted to fulfill, and one that many have encouraged me to do over the years, is slowly coming to fruition. When I have fulfilled that goal, I will share it. :)
Congrats to you on accomplishing an important goal in your life AM :) Thank you for taking the time to share. :)

Thank you for sharing, BGG. We may have something in common in #1. I tend to over analyze myself...my words and actions and how they may be perceived by others. It is a bad habit that serves no useful purpose and I have to STOP.
All the very best to you! I hope you can share your success in due time! I hope it is a day I am on board to read it!

Thank you for the kind words AM. I am too hard on myself sometimes. And as such, I can spend unnecessary time pontificating over my own actions or lack thereof. I get frustrated with myself, when I say or do stupid things in the "moment" as it were, when I know better. lol I don't try to be perfect. In my opinion, there is only one person who is. However, I don't ever want to get to the place in my life ever again, where I take things for granted, in whatever way. I believe we have all been guilty of that before. Complacency can creep into a persons mind and heart. And before they know it, they are going through the motions for the sake of going through the motions, because they have become "habit" or expected of them. I don't want my passion for life and love and all things in between, to ever become a "habit." And that is why I strive to do the very best I can each day. And I fail every day at one point or another. I get back up, dust myself off, try and laugh at myself when I can, and keep moving forward.
In a nutshell, I want to be the very best person I can be for me first and foremost. I want to be the best partner I can be when I am in a relationship. I want to be the best statesmen I can be for my country.

That is simply part of the human condition but as long as the complacency is not overwhelming or found in all parts of out life.
I don't want my passion for life and love and all things in between, to ever become a "habit."
Passions become a habit? Not sure what that means BGG?

I doubt many who want to be the worst they can be. lol I think most people want to be the best at themselves but I always say talk is cheap.
Many talk about what they want, but how many simply go and do it or do what needs to be done to change the course?
My only real goal at this time is to start to study photography. I am not a goal maker. I know life is too unpredictable. At least mine is.

We all have various passions ( read: interests ). I don't want to be one that goes through the motion, without that fire in my heart and soul, in whatever way. I am not suggesting that we should be an inferno all the time. lol There is a place and time for that. But I think we should be cognizant of that fire, and how very special it is to each and every one of us.

BGG,if its a true passion no one needs to remind you of it. If you are doing some "going through the motions" then whatever it is is likely not a passion for you.
Passions often consume us in various ways. We have limited controls. A true passion does not hide in the shadows.

Maybe to spend more time with my kids and not be so emotional about some things.

Since we are born of imperfection, I believe some of our passions can waiver at times, for whatever reason. It could be due to turmoil around us, that shifts our focus, whether right or wrong, or some kind of inner growth struggle, that can leave us reassessing our passions, and the proper balance thereof. I am basically talking about balance.

Passions may have to be delayed for life reasons but they never die...at least for me.
If complacency has stolen someone's passion I question if they were even passions in the first place.
My unrealized passions are still very much alive and firey.

passion is like a smoldering ember just awaiting the moment to burst into flame, I guess that is why it is sometimes called undying passion, it is something deep within that remains awake and awaits the spark of love
