I've never started a thread with a poll ... how does one do it?

When creating a thread, you have the option to create one by checking the appropriate box before clicking the submit button.

I'm pretty sure I wrote "poll", but when I need a "pole", I'll be sure and let you know. ;)

When creating a thread, you have the option to create one by checking the appropriate box before clicking the submit button.

Its not quite that intuitive. After you have opened a New Thread text box page, you have to go down to the bottom of the page and open Additional Options (if it is not already open.) Then after checking the box to Add a Poll and entering how many items you want, you have to click on Submit New Thread in that Additional Options cell. That produces the new text box page with cells into which you write the poll options. Only then do you fill in the general text box with comment about your poll and submit the new thread as normal.

It would be far easier to navigate through if they would change the name of the submit new thread button in the Additional Options cell...
