Tiny and dying but still-powerful stars called pulsars spin like crazy and light up their surroundings, often with ghostly glows.

So it is with PSR B1509-58, which long ago collapsed into a sphere just 12 miles in diameter after running out of fuel.

And what a strange scene this one has created.

In a new image from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, high-energy X-rays emanating from the nebula around PSR B1509-58 have been colored blue to reveal a structure resembling a hand reaching for some eternal red cosmic light.

This is defintely a bit more than seeing Mother Theresa in a bun.

God only has four fingers?

God only has four fingers?

 I was just about to ask the same thing!

Have you ever seen the horsehead nebula?

Pretty eerie, huh?

Also, the horsehead nebula is capable of being viewed in the visible spectrum of electromagnetic radiation; the hand image is composed of artificial colorings of x-ray emissions.

Oh, and both images (horse and hand) could have long ago shifted forms into unrecognizable images. The horsehead nebula is 1500 light years away.

Certainly some of the most captivating images in the universe. It boggles the mind .

Perhaps we could take measurements of the "hand" and see if it matches the same hand that made the Finger Lakes in New York.

I see a man with a snowy white beard wearing a jewel encrusted crown.

Each of those pulsars that are making up the x-ray emissions could be as big as the Earth... on the small scale.

Without the actual data, I'd suspect that the finger lakes are a "wee bit" too small for your theory :D

Are you watching "The Holy Grail" again?

Well then that settles it, it can't be the hand of god.

This is defintely [sic] a bit more than seeing Mother Theresa in a bun.

actually, it is exactly the same thing as seeing Mother Theresa in a bun, or Jesus in my toast, or Ganesh in my Cheerios.

So true. Gets one thinking of so many things. I feel so small.

To me it looks like the hand of King Kong grabbing a Jenny out of the air above the Empire State Building... ;)
