Today around 3:20 pm I was waiting for Austin to get home from school. I had to run into town as we have been out at my mom's while our shower was getting repaired. On my way home I see a car laying in the ditch with a telephone pole on top of it and my heart just dropped...it was my son's friend.

It seems that these four boys came out to my mom's house dropped off Austin and headed back into town (which was 3 miles away) as they came over the hill into town Doug the driver, lost control and flipped the car which slid into the ditch and toppled the telephone pole onto the car.

They extracted the three boys...Doug and Justin are injured but we think they will be fine. Andrew is critically injured and they don't think that he is going to make it. So if you could all please say prayers for these boys...Austin who is suffering from terrible guilt because he wanted a ride home and I had told him to ride the bus. Doug and Justin in hopes that there injuries are minor and they will be ok. And Andrew...that the Lord will hear our prayers and heal his injuries. He is a wonderful young man with so much potential, a good kid and a great friend to those around him.

Thanks...
Kelly

Hello Mom,

My urgent prayers are there for these Boys. My prayers can't wait for another trip to the Falls in this situation. I've written before of how I believe that God doesn't much care how or where you pray. He just appreciates it when we do. These Boys need these prayers now and they have my heartfelt urgent prayers to the Good Lord.

I hope and pray that God is listening intently and will send His intervention.

Be well Lady,

Jim

PS: Those Boys will be in my urgent prayers again at the Falls later today.

Update on Justin and Andrew...
Justin died 3 times while on Life Flight but was able to make it to Boise where he had emergency surgery for a collapsed lung. He did break every rib and they are now concerned that he might of broken his back. But for now he is stable.
Andrew had surgery on his head in hopes of relieving the pressure. He broke both legs and his back...he is paralyzed from the waist down. The hospital here thought he was brain dead but they did find some activity when they transferred him to Boise...when they wrecked his head became trapped between the seat and the telephone pole they hit so he layed there for an hour before they could get him extracted.
For now there is nothing more we can do except pray and I am thankful for all your prayers....
Take care & God Bless

Where there is life, there is hope == the Hope Who is the Alpha and the Omega, the Resurrection and the LIFE eternal for all whom He cherishes.

We shall continue praying for both Justin and Andrew. The LORD our God created both boys. May He act now to preserve and protect what He Himself began.

How's your own boy holding up? He must now feel guilty or tormented because of his friends -- not his fault. But it could be used to twist his heart all inside out and upside down, so this is also a prayer issue.

 dear Mom. Major  -- you hang in there, too.

Hello MOM,

I did get to the Falls today and I offered up my most urgent prayers for all of these boys to the 'Big Guy'. I can only hope every single one of them makes it through in the best shape they can be in. This is tough stuff needing gentle prayer; so no hollering up at the Heavens today. Just prayer in the best way I know how to do.

Be as well as you can be Lady,

Jim

Good Morning All,
The boys Justin and Andrew made it through surgery...Andrew seems to be holding even though he is still very critical. Justin is in better condition but they just found that he also has a broken collar bone that the first hospital didn't catch.

I have no doubt that the prayers are helping to pull these 2 young men through this. They are loved and missed by the community, but it will be the support and prayers of everyone along with the Dr's and the Lord that will bring them through this.

Thank you all and please, please keep them in your prayers.
God Bless
Kelly

This is the car that the boys were in, they had come out to my mom's house to drop Austin off as our water wasn't working so we were staying out there. The weather was nasty and it was raining...when you come into town from the east there is a dip and 2 spud cellars on the right hand side of the road. The trucks had been in and out all day so the road was covered in mud. Between this and the rain it becomes so dangerous...Doug was coming into town and the car in front of him slowed down. Rather than slam on his brakes he tried going around the car, hit the mud and lost control of the car. The car traveled maybe 50 feet, then it went into the barrow pit and hit a telephone phone. None of the kids were wearing seat belts!:((

Andrew was in back and was trapped with the telephone pole and the seat of the car. Justin was in front in the passenger seat and it literally crushed all his ribs. Doug the driver escaped with only cuts and bruises.

You can see by the picture of the car that it is a miracle that ANY of these boys survived. Andrew is in such bad condition...all we can do is pray that the Lord will heal him. I think sometimes it is so hard for little communities like mine...we have 400 people who live in town. The kids at school are having a pretty rough time of it, they aren't just classmates...they are like family to each other.

Thank you for your prayers...I know that they will help get these boys through this.

Take care & God Bless

WHOA! divine intervention indeed!

Perhaps the kids need to realize that knowing how much they love and need each other is why the LORD moved to prevent these three boys from dying?

That accident was waiting to happen to anyone, anytime -- and now the town knows they've got to clean that up so it won't be nearly the danger it was -- and, because the boys cared enough for Austin to give him a lift, the LORD moved to save their lives instead of letting the fullest horror occur.

It's their love and mutual interdependence that keeps them alive and gives them reason to "keep on keeping on" -- and moves the LORD to protect them all.

 Wow. They are lucky to be alive. We're still praying for them.

And I know what you mean, being a small-town Idaho boy myself. Something happens to one, and it's like it happens to us all.

Any updates on the boys in the hospital? How 'bout Doug? He may have only received scrapes and bruises from the accident, but that's not all he got. He's dealing with a lot of emotional trauma.

We're praying for all of 'em.

Justin had surgery on his spine and they inserted a titanium brace. He also broke his collar bone, he is still on the venilator but he is doing so well they hope to take him off that tomorrow or later this week. He now has only one chest tube rather 3 (I believe). He is also off the moriphine drip and was awake watching tv last night. He is unable to talk due to the tubes but is able to communicate to the Dr's that he isn't in so much pain. His recovery is nothing short of remarkable and I know the prayers are working!

Andrew is still in a coma...the head trauma was so extensive that they don't know what kind of damage that he has suffered. He had surgery yesterday to help relieve the swelling. He has other injuries but for now that is the one that the Dr's are most worried about. I don't know if I mentioned this but Justin and Andrew are cousins...there poor families have been hit twice as hard with all this.

Doug came over last night...after hugging him he got the "I love you but you have got to be more careful lecture!" He is still in shock somewhat I think...I honestly don't believe he can comprehend what kind of injuries these boys have suffered. Even worse is the reception that he will receive from some of the kids. A few who have taken it upon themselves to make his life miserable...however I know that the school will NOT tolerate this kind of behavior. But that doesn't mean that it won't happen when no one is looking. Doug told me that one of the kids said they were going to kick his "butt" for driving so reckless...of course Doug told the kid to bring it on. I asked Doug what he hoped to gain by fighting? I said "Do you think fighting is going to heal your friends?"

By his reaction I think he better understood just how foolish fighting is at this point. Instead they should all concentrate on praying for Justin and Andrew! Doug is 18 now and doesn't seem to realize that means he is going to be held responsible for what he does. Not sure what kind of support he has with his family. But he does have some extended family and friends who will do all that they can to help pull him through this...and hopefully get him on the right track.

My heart aches for these boys and their families. To sit back and wait is so frustrating but I can only hope that they know how much this town loves them and how much the kids at school love them boys!

Thank you for the prayers...every single one is needed!

You are so very right Rhet...if love can heal these boys will be fine! It is by the grace of the Lord that Austin was allowed to make it home...I sat in my truck as they extracted the boys from the car sobbing! Part from fear for those poor children and relief that it was not mine that was being extracted from the wreckage. :((

Sometimes it takes a "wake up" call to get our attention. To remind us how fragile and beautiful this life is...how often we take it for granted!

After all that had went on this last week I was so ready for Monday...ready for a new week. This morning I asked Jamie to go wake up Casey as I let him sleep a little longer...he hasn't been feeling to good. Jamie came in and said "Mom...Casey won't wake up!" I don't know if I can describe to you what I felt for that split second. However, I do believe that based on my reaction I scared poor Chubbs to death!

Casey was fine...in fact he was out like a light snoring softly! Poor Jamie had no clue that saying something like that would cause his mother to literally come "uncorked!" But all is well here now and Casey is tucked into my bed once again sound asleep! Not sure what is wrong, but am thinking that he might of picked of cold.

Am headed to the garage to get stuff ready for a garage sale. I need a new camera and what a better way to buy one! I love spring cleaning...out with all the old musties and in with a clean fresh smelling home!

Hope all is well with you and yours Rhet...

The sweeling in Andrew's brain should be going down by now. His chances of a full recovery increase each day. I am not sure how I missed this thread last Friday but I did. As I read this I am reliving the early days after Mitch's accident. What these families need is alot of prayer and support, and a lot of quick cash. I cannot say what it meant to us to have all our friends and family around us in those first couple weeks. As for Andrew, he just needs time to heal. If he was going to die, he probably already would have done that. I cannot tell you how many young boys and girls I have met since Mitch's accident that have made a full recovery after head trauma from a car wreck. Stay positive around their parents and families. You can make a difference here Kelly. I know the waiting is tough for them, but if they are still waiting then that is good in this case cause the alternative is much worse. Young people are very resilient to brain injuries, much moreso even than a 25 or 30 year old.

I am praying about this kelly

And this is exactly why Doug needs all the love and prayers he can get. He already knows what he did was bad, he's already feeling the guilt. He's in the danger zone already with an unsure foundation with his family and hasn't had much stability "falling through the cracks". So, he needs someone there to help him go through the grieving process (both of his friends are severely injured) and readjust back to normality. Something like this could wake him up enough to readjust where he's going in his life and make him a responsible person.

If you can, work with Doug. If you can't, find someone that can and encourage them to help him.

For Justin and Andrew, they're in capable hands--aside from the Lord's--they're in the hands of these doctors and nurses. We'll pray for their continued improvement.

Oh, yeah.

Doug must NOT become one of the lost souls running around unable to find hope. Prayers redoubling NOW.

If we have anything at all to say about it Doug will NOT fall by the wayside. He is going to live with his grandpa! The best news that I have heard...I am soooooo glad.

The school has been exceedingly good to him and I am thrilled that they forced the issue with his mom about coming back to school. The principal insisted that he come back the day after the accident so that he and the school counselor could talk with Doug. Also it gave his friends a chance to show him just how missed and how loved he is...something I don't think that he realized!

No matter how squeaky the wheel gets...it takes all the kids to make it turn! If nothing else it has drawn them very, very close and taught them a hard lesson on taking one another for granted.

Doug knows that he always has a place to come to...whether it is just to hang out or to live. He was kind enough to put up with my lecture;), but he knew that I was scared and it was all I could do not to lock him and Austin up in the bedroom until they turn 30! For whatever reason my home is constantly filled with kids and it is impossible not to love or worry about them.

Goodnight all...please keep the boys in your prayers and know that all of you are always in mine.
Take care & God Bless

Below is an update from Andrew's mom (she uses a website to post updates at the hospital)...I was so excited, just thought that I would share this with you!

"Wonderful news!!! Andrew's father Joaquin is spending the night with Andrew, and he and the nurse were able to get Andrew to open his eyes partially. By stimulating him. He also said that Andrew squeezed his hand several times. These are all signs of hope and answered prayers. However, he is still in a coma. I believe that it is all the prayers and the good lord giving us a sign. Time will tell. At this point we will take anything that we can get. Our love goes out to each and everyone of you for your continued support. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!"

Update from Justin's site:

Justin had a good night last night. With being taken off the drip morphine and on to oral morphine he sleeps better and stays conscious for long periods. Last night we watched TV together pretty much all night. The new meds allows him to remain awake. He's going through one of his two 2 hour breathing trials right now. They decided not to remove his remaining two chest tubes until tomorrow. Hopefully he will be off the respirator by tomorrow too, but sometime later in the week seems more likely. He is improving quickly now, or so it seems. At least his spirit seems to be better and he is willing to work with the nurses, therapists and doctors. He will probably be very tired after all they plan to do with him today.

Yes!

Not out of the woods yet by a long shot, but stepping that direction.

Prayers doubling up.

Is Doug happy about living with his grandfather?

Here is an update that the family would like to have sent out to all those who have been so kind...your prayers are most definitely helping!
Thank you all...

Good morning all,

Okay here it is, a PRAISE REPORT!!!!! Our God is sooo awesomeJ Andrew (Drew) opened his eyes last night around 8:30pm. My brother Joaquin (Jake) called me all excited with the news. He was going to come back home (California) yesterday with my cousin Michael but thank God he decided to stay another night so he could spend some time alone with Drew. Jake said that he was telling his son how much he loved him when suddenly Drew opened his eyes. Immediately the nurse told Drew he was in a severe car accident but that he and the other boys were going to be okay. Then Jake asked Drew to squeeze his hands 5x if he could understand what was said, and he did! Then just to be sure he repeated it then ran around to the other side and told him to open his hand flat, and he did!! Praise God!! I was calling and texting my family, we were all praising God!! Then late Jake called me to tell me that the nurses called in to the doctor and that they would be turning off the sedative that aided the coma and stop giving him morphine at midnight. So, at midnight my sister, dad and I prayed.

This morning Jake called me to tell me that Drew did his two thumbs up…. Which means he’s coming out of it. So now, they took the breathing tube out and are transitioning him (C-path) to breathe on his own!!!

My brother kept thanking me for praying but I told him it was not just me praying it was Many people praying!! And the list gets longer…! And that it was not the words we prayed it was what we believed that God himself would do!!! He was so amazed how quick God was answering!!!! My father also said he was just praying when I called him with the good news…. He was so excited!!! Praises to our God the grand physician and the King of kings!!!

Anyway, Andrew has much more loops to go through but this was the mountain we were praying to move!!!! Thank you all!!!!!

Please forward this as a Praise Report! God bless

Yes!

Not out of the woods yet by a long shot, but stepping that direction.

Prayers doubling up.

Is Doug happy about living with his grandfather?

Doug is now living with his Grandpa and that is the "best" news!
He isn't very happy about having a "bed time" though!;) Which made me laugh as he didn't have a lot of rules at home! The school has rallied around him and things are going good for him, far better than they have in a while.

Justin is now starting some physical therapy which is very, very painful for him. His lungs are getting stronger and he is now wearing a brace...his back was also broken and they had to fuse part of back together with titanium rods.

He is able to talk now and managed to get the nurses to bring him a Dr. Pepper! I imagine that his recovery will be slow and painful but I just know that it is because of our Savior as well as the prayers of those around the country that has brought him this far!

Andrew still hasn't opened his eyes, but he is able to squeeze his mom and dad's hands when asked a question. Escpecially when they asked him if he wanted a chocolate donut. The Dr's fear that he is suffering from some paralysis...so at this point all we can do is keep praying that he will wake up completely and not lose the use of his legs.

The Dr's are still cautious about his outcome...but they are also amazed at how he is healing! Our combines prayers are helping and the families are so very grateful for each and everyone of them!

You guys are the BEST!!!

Good news all around then.

Poor Doug. Kids need boundaries until they grow wise enough to set those boundaries for themselves.

Way to go, Justin!

And if Andrew knows what a chocolate donut is, he's still here with us and is getting better, cell by cell by cell.

Give them all our love. Prayers continue, dear sister.

And thank you for being our interface with this one, to give us the privilege of sharing the burden of others.

Update from Andrew's mom...

It is now 4:30 Andrew had an MRI @ 12:45, and now is having another along CAT scan. All that I have been told is that they have seen something. We are sitting anxiously waiting to hear the news. I almost feel like I did a week ago, upon getting the initial news. My stomach is turning and all I can think about is my beautiful boy. My first boy! The one that I held all night after giving birth to him. Not knowing what the future held for us other than the love that I had for him the first time that I set my eyes upon him. I want to hold him, in my arms and tell him how much I love him. I want to take all of his pain and suffering away. I wish that we could trade places because seeing him like this is killing me. The only way that I make it through each day is by the Grace of God and his sweet Mercy. I just want my baby back. Yet, I have to remain strong for his other 2 beautiful brothers that miss him soooooooo much. ANDREW COME HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are waiting to hear what the test results are...at this point all we can do it keep praying that Andrew can overcome this.

Update from Justin's mom...

JUSTIN IS DOING BETTER EVERYDAY, HE IS STILL ON THE NUEROLOGY FLOOR TILL HE MOVES TO REHAB BUT THEY WILL DO ALL THE THINGS THEY WOULD DO IN REHAB RIGHT IN THIS ROOM ALSO. HE IS IN ALOT OF PAIN STILL BUT HE DOES BETTER WITH EACH TIME THEY HAVE TO ROLL HIM TO HIS OPPISITE SIDE WHICH IS EVERY 2 HOURS OR SO. HE SAID TO SAY THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY FOR THE PRAYERS AND TO KEEP IT UP AND HE WANTS TO GET BETTER SO HE CAN GO AND GET ANDREW GOING. I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SOOO MUCH TO EVERYBODY ALSO,YOURE PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS HAVE BEEN HEARD I BELIEVE SO LETS JUST KEEP EM UP K, AGAIN THANK YOU.

During these days, when we focus on the LORD's suffering, resurrection and ascension from the grave to destroy death for all eternity, giving to all His creatures the promise of eternal life,

you bet

I'm thinking of Andrew and Justin and trusting the LORD for that promise of Life Renewed, Restored, made abundant in His eternal grace, not just in the future but now, in this present world, too.

Some things just should not be. And Andrew's condition is most assuredly one of them. May the LORD move NOW to restore, to heal, to replenish what has been damaged that Andrew should return to his friends and family, made new, to serve them for years yet to come.

Kelly, how is Austin doing?

Happy Easter Rea!
Austin is doing ok...a little quieter now and seems to have grown up over night. He has talked to Justin and I snuck in and read what he posted...he feels so guilty that he isn't up there with them. But I know that this has certainly given him a huge wake up call. Lord knows that no matter how often I nagged every single time the boys left they never listened...my only hope now is that they will all be more careful after seeing what has happened to their friends.

For the most part Austin is doing ok...we talk about it and thanks to my family and friends he always has someone to talk to. Doug is doing good, better now that he is with his Grandpa...

The Dr's found that he had had a stroke sometime in the last few days, but it doesn't seem to have effected him at all. The only way that they will know is when he is finally breathing on his own which should be here any days as his lungs are doing great!

The Lord has truly blessed this poor family who has been hit with one heartache after another. I can't tell each and every one of you how "grateful" I am for your prayers and support! Although thye will be spending Easter in the hospital away from family I know that they are celebrating Easter and all the blessings that have come their way!

May the Lord watch over and bless each of you my friends...
Happy Easter

Hello Kelly,

All of the Boys were in my Easter prayers at the Falls today and also there yesterday. I know the Good Lord is very busy and I hope I got some words in edgewise. Standing near the edge of that Bridge seemed to me to be the best way of God perhaps hearing my pleas. It is just great to know that all of the Boys are doing much better. They will all remain in my urgent prayers to the Good Lord that they continue to do so.

Be well Lady and a somber yet Happy Easter to you.

Wow, So far today we are off to a wonderful start. Andrew is still pretty groggy. It took some coaxing to get him to wake up. He gave both Mike and I a kiss!!!!!!!! What a wonderful treat.
They removed the breathing machine, and hooked up his food bag. Last night he had a temp of 101, and they are unsure of the cause but this morning it has come back down. All of this is good news.
We are so happy!!!!! We will keep you posted. Thanks for all your prayers.

I just want all of you to know that Andrew's recovery is nothing short of miraculous! More than once the Dr's were certain that he wouldn't pull through this...as with Justin who died 3 times on his way to Boise. But with our prayers and the Lord these 2 boys have come a long way!

It was a wonderful Easter for their families as Easter was the first time that Justin and Andrew were able to see each other.

Whatever you are doing at the falls my friend...it's working! Take care all & God Bless

My heart sings in gratitude to the ONE Who IS!

How is Justin this bright Tuesday afternoon?

And Austin?

Good Afternoon Dear Friend!
Austin is doing great! I woke up this morning with a violent, violent migraine...all I could do was lay in the chair with tears running down my face! Even worse was I was throwing up as the pain was overwhelming...but he brought me cold compresses. Got all the kids ready for school, covered me with a blanket and I was asleep when they left for the bus! Then when he got home he greeted me a big hug and an "I love you" mom...made me feel so good! He is such a good kid...I just love him to death!

Justin is doing great. Although his recovery is extremely painful he is taking it with no complaints and is anxious to get back home to his family and friends! Here is the last update from his Mom on Easter...

HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYBODY AND THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOU ONGOING SUPPORT AND PRAYERS.
JUSTIN IS DOING VERY WELL STILL, HE WAS ABLE TO COME DOWN AND HAVE EASTER DINNER WITH ALL OF HIS FAMILY IN THE CAFATERIA TODAY.
TODAY IS ALSO THE FIRST DAY THAT JUSTIN GOT TO SEE ANDREW, AND OF COURSE IT WAS A NEEDED THING FOR HIM AND HE GOT A GOOD RESPONSE OUT OF ANDREW.
TOMORROW JUSTIN WILL START INTENSE REHAB WITH A PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST. HE WILL BE EXPECTED TO GO AT IT HARD FOR 3 STRAIGHT HOURS. JUSTIN IS STILL VERY DETERMINED AND FIGHTING HARD TO GET OUT OF HERE AND SO HE CAN GO GET ANDREW GOING.
THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYBODY AND MAY YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES HAVE A VERY NICE EASTER. GOD BLESS!!!!

I am awed by his recovery...the Lord has truly blessed these families!

Doug is doing good and the school has been so very good to him! I was thrilled by how the students and teachers rallied...they have been so very supportive of both him and Austin!

Austin's cousin Jason is home on leave from San Diego...they have had such a good time together and he was here to help us celebrate Easter! Jason goes back this week and will probably be deployed to Afganistan here in the next 3-6 months. But for now he is really enjoying the Marines!

Hope all is well with you and that you had a Happy Easter!

Hello Kelly,

The Boys were in my prayers to the 'Big Guy' at the Falls last evening. It is just heartening to know that their progress is going well.

I was at a Pharma Co. I have dealings with on Tuesday and learned that a Young fellow I see there was in a bad car wreck and hurt pretty badly. He was included in my prayers for the 'Boys' and I consider him one of those 'Boys' at least in how he was injured.

I'll know more on Friday, but one thing was certainly interesting just before I was about to leave on Tuesday; a Young Lady whom this 'Boy' is close friends with went running in tears for the phone. I', of course, was thinking of bad news. Thankfully, I dalied a bit and I spoke to her shortly afterwards. It turns out it was the 'Boy' himself that was the caller she was answering. He's hurt preety badly; broken leg, face damage, all of his ribs and bleeding on the brain. But, he was able to talk with her and relate all of this stuff. That is so special; he has the ability to communicate despite his injuries. All is not lost with him and these other 'Boys'. I pray to God that He also takes special notice and continues to get these 'Boys' through these most trying of times.

Jeff is so right; young folks are very elastic and versatile in their healing. Mitch is such a fine example of this. These things, in and of themselves, is a God Sent Grace.

Please be well Lady,

Jim

You are so very right...Justin gets to come home at the end of this week or the beginning of next week! His healing has been incredible...far faster than us or even the Dr's imagined! Andrew was able to sit up in a chair for the first time...he is able to use all of his upper body!

Mitch is what help to give me hope to start with...not only does he have exceptional parents but we were able to witness a "miracle!"
Take care dear friend...stay safe in your travels!

You are so very right...Justin gets to come home at the end of this week or the beginning of next week! His healing has been incredible...far faster than us or even the Dr's imagined! Andrew was able to sit up in a chair for the first time...he is able to use all of his upper body!

Good news about justin but Anderew still has some work it looks like. I have seen many kids these boys age at Shepherd Center that could not move or even talk that are doing great. A good rehab facility will be critical for him. please relay my best to his parents, I know what they are going through. Does he have a site at carepages or caring bridge? If not, maybe you should suggest they start one.

Jeff...
They do have a Caring Bridge page which is wonderful...that is how I get my updates. But thanks for the suggestion...:D! Justin was at school this morning, which thrilled the kids...he has been so driven to get this far as he is just desperate to get back to the hospital and help Andrew out. Here is a current update on Andrew from his Mom...

Good Sunday Morning. I got to see Andrew a little later than normal this morning, as Brendan is back with me. Mike and Chaz went to see Andrew @ 6am, and said that he was resting peacefully. A short while later I went to visit Andrew and he was awake. He looks good.
There are a few things that I feel need to be clarified about Andrew and his improvements. He is not in a coma, but is unable to speak. He answers basic commands, and is unable to write at this time. When awake he will look at you and make eye contact, but most of the time its an expressionless stare. The long term effects are yet to be known. We remain positive, however there are no guarantees. Time will tell. From a mothers perspective I can only pray for a complete recovery, but I am trying to brace myself for the alternatives. Once again time will tell and God knows the outcome.
Andrew also has sensation in his legs, and has apparently moved his toes. Once again I can only pray that this is true, but very possibly it could just be a spasum, and triggered by stimulation. Time will tell what the true extent of his injuries will be.
I want nothing more that to be able to see Andrew play sports, walk, run again. I want him to be able to use the brand new track shoes that I bought. That showed up the day after this awful life altering accident.............
As anyone who knows me personally you know that I am a person who tells it like it is and during this time I am just being honest and realistic. Mike and I thank you for all of your support during this time. We are also thankful that Joaquin is here to visit with Andrew.

I know how far Mitchell has come and I am praying that Andrew will come through this. I am not sure on Andrew's extended treatment right now though but will pass on the information about the Rehab facilities.

Thanks everyone for keeping these boys in your prayers...
Take Care & God Bless

Hello Kelly,

All of the 'Boys' were in my prayers to the Good Lord yesterday at the Falls. The fellow I spoke of at the Pharma Co. appears to be having a rough time of it too. Some of his friends there were hesitant to visit him (His name is Justin; some irony there methinks) because Justin doesn't want them there and they heard he is 'hallucinating'. Hopefully I got through to them that this is a direct result of his brain injury. His best friend (a sweet young woman) wouldn't even talk to me about it. I left her a note with my phone # but she hasn't called. I'll know more on the morrow.

Thanks for the update on Andrew. On the not speaking stuff; his area of speech has probably been affected by the TBI. I was not in a coma either but my speech was nearly non-existent in the 1st few days then graduated to jumbled up nonsensical diatribes. At some point later on, my speech became a host of curse words. This was memorized speech from my hippo-campus which took over because the 'normal' speech part of my brain was injured and didn't have the ability to communicate.

It appears to me (please keep in mind that I have no memory of this whatsoever) that once the bleeding on my brain stopped and the swelling went down; some sort of speech returned. All these things are progressive as the brain tries to recover. It took several months, with the help of a Speech Therapist, to return to any semblance of normalcy; at least as far as speech goes.

The point is; TBI's have progressions depending on how badly the brain was injured. It may take Andrew a great deal of time and healing to get back to his normal self. I have no doubt that this can and does happen and I hope and pray that this will be the case with Andrew. We are witnessing this right now with Mitch's recovery.

If, as Jeff asked also, you could PM the Care-Bridges page on Andrew; I would appreciate that. I wouldn't think of posting anything there but perhaps I may be able to post something here that could be of some help.

Please be well Lady,

Jim

PS: Please let Casey know from me that I consider him one of these 'Boys' also. I'm sure they will all have a heck-uve a hoot a few years down the line when they bare and compare their scars. I once had it out with an ER Doctor years ago who wouldn't give me a smiley face to add to my head collection whilst removing a sist. I had to settle for a lousy X ! Geesh! A smiley face would have been the rage at that time! Please tell Casey I say emphatically; STOP leading with your head! Unless he's happy with a ton of scars! Of this; I speak with the authority of knowing and the infliction of carrying some quite nasty scars all about me bobbling noodle! We all have crosses to carry but they are quite heavy when they are borne by your noggin. They don't get any prettier as you progress through life. But, they are a conversation piece if nothing else. I know this very well also.

Jim...

I believe that my boys have the same outlook on the scar thing...nothing better hearing the guys say "cool" and the girls saying "ohhhh...are you ok?" I didn't know that you had went through all that Jim, it is truly amazing what the human body can withstand.

I am praying that Andrew will recover from this...having watched Mitch and all that he has managed to over come is so inspiring!
I will pm that to ya...

Update from Andrew's mom...

Today at approximately noon our dear Andrew will under go an exploratory surgery of the bladder, to try and find the cause of the pain that he has been going through. With the irrigation of the catheter it has help, but there is still a underlying problem.
Please continue to Pray for Andrew as he has to endure another procedure. As I continue to gather information I will post an update later this afternoon.

Update from Andrew's Mom..

While trying to stay busy .Waiting to hear the outcome of today's surgery I stumbled across something that Andrew wrote.

"Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way."

Wow!!!! How proud I am of this boy. How I love and miss him sooooo much.

Good Evening-I just received a phone call from his father Joaquin, and good news. They went in and fixed the tear in his prostrate which was caused by him pulling out his catheter. He is now resting peacefully. I cant wait to see him tomorrow. I will keep you posted. Thank you for the many Prayers. I know that God is answering them...........

Rhet...I think this is what was making Andrew so uncomfortable and I am praying that this will fix it. Thanks dear friends for the prayers...:hug::hug:

Hello Kelly,

The 'Boys' were in my prayers again yesterday at the Falls and especially Andrew. I am thanking God as I write this that his Surgeon was able to find and repair this problem. Andrew will be in my prayers till he is fully recovered.

Justin, (from the Pharma Co.) is home now. I spoke with that Young Lady who is his best friend and she gave me the update yesterday. Darn good news.

My prayers continue for ALL of the 'Boys'

Be well Lady,

Update from Andrew's Mom...

What an amazing day!!!!!! This is the first time in 2 days since I have seen Andrew. I have new news to confirm. Joaquin has told me that he has seen Andrew move his toes on command. I did not believe him, and told him that it was just spasmus. Much to my dismay I was witness to him moving his toes upon command multiple times. But wait there is more news. His Aunt Jamie was here this morning before I got here and the rehab. nurse was working with Andrew and he wrote his name. Circled Chaz' name that was on a piece of paper along with pointing several items out on the menu. He also is starting to try and speak. Although they say that it can take sometime in doing so he did answer how old he was by mouthing 14. These are all very exciting events. They are very small rays of hope from all of the prayers.
He will be moving to the rehab floor here within the next little while. Remember these are by no means a guarantee that he is out of the woods, but a very good sign.
I could scream with joy right now. He also blew kisses to me and practically grabbed his baby brother Brendan from my hands to hold him......

This is WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL news!!! I can only imagine the excitement that Amber and Mike (Andrew's parents) are feeling right now! Thank you all for your prayers...
Take care & God Bless

Hello Kelly,

There aren't very many things that will move me to tears. This does; and these are very happy tears.

I have no doubt that Andrew was in that 'Holy Place' I've written about in Mitch's thread. I also have no doubt that he was 'called back' through the Grace of God by the undying Love of his Family and the prayers they have 'offered up' to God. I'm sure the Good Lord has also heard our prayers and took them into His accounts also.

I haven't been able to sleep this night and I was about to try and shut it all down. I'm amazingly glad I didn't and I saw your post. This is simply beautiful news and I think I'll be able to shut down and get a peaceful rest knowing that this 'Boy' is still with us and he decided with God's help to come back to his loved ones. AHHHH! Joys are so much sweeter when they are not looked for.

Be well Kelly, and you now have my permission to put your own handkerchief away if you can or even want to. Tears are a great release of all that you have had pent up since this accident. Savor each and every one of them as will I.

Jim

PS: Hopefully, I'll hit the lottery and buy a place nearer to the Falls. I'm tempted to go there right now. Actually, with a much wiser thought, it will have to wait. I'm just so tired and the roads in this neck of the woods can be treacherous and it was snowing a bit when I came back in from my commiserations on the 'Dark Side'. God will definitely have my prayers if only from my pillow which is screaming for my attention.

PSS: Please try to get some much needed rest Yeself. Please?

PSS...I did get some rest my friend~did you? I hope you know that your prayers and kind words mean so much...it is a gift to comfort those in need and you do a wonderful job! The boys are indeed doing better and I "know" that your faithful trips to the "Falls" have helped!

Don't forget to take care of "you" dear friend! We all need time to rest and recharge ourselves...so I am praying that you are taking care of yourself! Here is a current update on Andrew from his Mom...

As of Saturday May 2 Andrew will have been in the hospital for one month. With his intial injuries being a hemotoma, fractured skull, broken neck, spine, along with sever brain damage. Need I mention several other problems along the way.
Yes, he has come a long ways since then, but I have witnessed him for the past several days struggle. He is very FRUSTRATED. Cognetiveley his brain responseds, but he is unable to communicate. He tries to write but it is not legable. He tries to speak, but is unaudible.
I have not updated because there have not been any major changes. Each day he has a busy day from the moment he wakes, until it is time to retire. He is having to re-learn everything. Think about what you do from day to day. Then waking up and not being able to do those things again, physically. Andrew is having to learn everything from sitting, brushing his teeth, to everything you can think of all over again.
This is what Andrew has to endure each day. I continue to remind him that he is a fighter and we will win this battle, but that it will take time and that he needs to listen to the Drs.
We continue to pray and know that God hears our prayers and continues to answer.

Please continue to keep this child in your prayers...him and his family are working so very hard.
His family truly appreciates every prayer you have said for him...
Take care & God Bless

Update on Andrew:

What would you do if you could not eat for over thirty days??????
Andrew ate a one and a half pumpkins pies yesterday along with cream of wheat, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and more pudding. He keeps pointing at the KFC commercials and wants chicken. I keep telling him soon.
He is keeping me busy rubbing and stretching his legs. With each day that passes he is saying more words. Sometimes he has to repeat himself several times. On Friday he kept saying bust, bust, bust, and I asked what??? Bust out! I asked where he wanted to go and he said home. I then asked what he wanted to do when he got home and he said "LIVE".
Yesterday he got real restless so we put him in the wheel chair and went for a stroll around the rehab floor. He can maneuver it really good.
He has become quite demanding!!!!!!
As of today at this time he has eaten 2 large containers of chocolate pudding, and cream of wheat.

Hello Kelly,

Andrew is trying to communicate. Darn good news! It appears that the speech area of his brain is hurt pretty good. He will depend on memorized speech at some point which is stored in the hippocampus. Along with that will be many curse words that are 'memorized' there also.

The following quote is from Mitch's thread and deals with speech issues as well as eating. More great news that the 'Boy' is eating like a champ:

Hello Jeff,

Emma and JennyEliza are smack dab on the mark.

On the 'music' thing: It's has great therapeutic effects. This is where Adam and Mitch's friends can be invaluable. They know his tastes in music, perhaps have been to concerts with Mitch.

Song and lyrics are stored in another part of the brain. It is 'memorized' there if those songs brought Mitch some Joy. 'Memorized' speech is also kept there and don't be surprised that Mitch may utter many cuss words he may have stored there also. The brain will depend on and use whatever is available to 'communicate'.

When Mitch is off the respirator you will find if his speech has been affected by his injury. If it is affected, it's Called Aphasia and there are several different types named after the scientists who discovered those parts of the brain.

Wernicke's aphasia; 'Answers to questions are given fluently but are nonsensical'. QUESTION: "How are you today"? ANSWER: "When? Easy for my river runs black boxes wizzel abata H on when boobies come"

Broca's aphasia. 'Answers to questions are given hesitantly but are sensible. QUESTION: "What is this a picture of (dog barking). ANSWER "D-d-d-Dg. eh, no...d-d damn...p-p pet, yeah, yeah, pet, pet, pet, b-b..makes noise.

Conduction aphasia: 'Language is understood and spontaneous speech is unaffected but sentences spoken or written by others cannot be repeated'. QUESTION: "Repeat the following"..."No ifs, ands or buts about it". ANSWER: "No nifs nand nor but..."

Anomia: 'Naming things is difficult. QUESTION: "What is this"? (point to a jacket lapel, watch band, or pen). ANSWER" "What you wear, thing for time, you write with it".

All of these quotes are from the Merck Manual (of Medical Information, second Home Edition). These things helped me tremendously along with diagrams of the brain. And the sections and functions of those sections.

Please keep in mind that You are a major part of the Hospital Team and they want and need your input. All of your Family and Mitch's friends are also part of that Team. Your expertise in the understanding of the Spiritual is an intangible in an aspect that will also help immensely.

A brief story: I wouldn't eat though I was able to. My Son tried (as the staff did) to be stern with me. My Son tells me that I shouted at him; "Doe! DOe! DOE! meaning No No NO,. I can only conjecture that I was furious that a Family member was trying to feed me or help feed me. My Son notified the staff and this was avoided in the future. The matter of fact lecture I got on the dangers and consequences of not eating had the desired effect to some point. I started eating. Of course I have no memory of this and reconstructed it the best I can.

I just hope that some or any part of this post will be of some assistance.

My urgent prayers continue to be 'in' with the 'Big Guy" for Mitch and all those there in dire need of prayer. They are also 'in' for the entire 'Team' and especially you Jeff who heads a part of the 'Team' with Spiritual knowledge greater than a few to many, including me.

Be well my Friend.

Jim

I was at the Falls today and Andrew was in my urgent prayers to the 'Big Guy'. You and yours and all of the 'Boys' were also in those prayers as were all the folks here in the OO. I had some special words for Rhet to the Good Lord and pray she's ok.

Jim,

I coulldn't have echoed those words any better. Right now the keyboard and screen are blurry. I am so amazed at the power of Our Lord when we ask what we ask of him.

This past week has been tough, in fact the past few weeks have, and I have relied on all my faith to get me through what I need to. My priest came last night and I had a wonderful talk with him. I couldn't go to Mass, was too sick. Have been for several weeks now. However after speaking with him things seemed better.

I know that there is so much work to be done after injuries such as these young boys suffered in this vehicle accident (my old days had me almost writing a 10-15A down-some things are never lost). Anyway, I have been on the scene many a time when people have been trapped and ejected. It is never a pretty sight. However you do what you have to do. Many people are familiar with the term "The Golden Hour". You have no idea how important that really, really is. I had an accident scene in FL. From the time of the accident, to the time fire and rescue showed up to the time BayFlight was called to the time the female patient was on the OR table was 23 minutes. Absolutely astounding. That lady today is living a healthy, happy life. In the Clearwater/Tampa/St Pete area they have an amazing trauma response system. Same here in LA City/LA County. My son is excited. This weekend is open house at all the firehouses and he is going to go to see about the mentoring program for CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) which is really, really, really grueling. However, we just found out that LA City, where we now live, has this program where they literally assign a fire fighter to you to mentor you through the program. Then when it comes time for you to take your test, you hopefully after all the mentoring, pass with flying colors. My son has lost 18lbs, has changed his whole diet around and is so committed to this it is amazing. I have no doubts that he will succeed.

These young men were so lucky that they were found so quickly. LifeFlighted out so quickly and seen obviously by some very talented trauma surgeons. I love trauma surgeons. Some of the craziest people on this earth but when the bell rings, it is all business. You have to be that way to be in emergency/trauma medicine You have to have that "dark" sense of humor. Some, in fact, many would not understand. Some of the stuff you see it literally amazing. Some makes you leave, find a linen closet and cry your eyes out. I know, because I have done that. Some makes you and your collegues doing high fives. It is all in a days work.

I am glad to see this young man's progress. My prayer list has grown so much these past few months. However those prayers are not being wasted or lost. I know. The reason I know is look at what is being witnessed here. Mitchell, Andrew. Our Lord does listen. He knows when we are sincere in our hearts and when we ask for someone to be healed. He is the Great Physician. My faith, through every post in whatever thread only grows stronger, as I see the healing that is taking place. Sure, some not as quickly or in the way we would like, but healing none the less.

Jim you are such a blessing for those on this board who have suffered or have family members who have suffered TBI's. There are those of us who can medically explain all the ins and outs of what can and will be or could be, but you have and continue to walk in those shoes. Your words and experiences are invaluable to those who now need the words of experience of someone, not a doctor, but of someone who has walked in those shoes. God bless you my friend. You have truly been and continue to be a blessing on these boards.

Kelly, you give Andrew a kiss for me and then say the following prayer either before or after:

O most sweet Lord Jesus Christ in union with that surpassing love in which Thou dist endure all the Wounds of They most Sacred Body, I beseech Thee to sustain my patience and overrule, for They greater honor and glor, all these moments of my suffering, in conformity to Thy Divine decree which Thou hast ordained from all eternity for my everlasting salvation. Amen.

That prayer is a prayer from Our Lord to St Gertrude for the sick and afflicted. I hope that it helps.

God bless you and tell Andrew's parents my thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.

Jim, Jeff & Blazer...thank you!!! Andrew is beginning to regain the use of his legs which just boggles the mind as the Dr's just knew he would be paralyzed or so I thought. Needless to say this child is filled with so much courage and determination...I am in awe of all that he has accomplished!

Here is a current update from his mom:
As I left Andrew's bedside tonite after our little pizza party with Cheryl, Ryker, Chaz and I. We order Flying Pie Pizza which he consumed 3 pieces of combination. Two chocolate chip cookies, and a hostess apple pie. He was very relaxed and clam.
He went to the eye DR. today and I did not get to go with him. Because I had to go and have a tooth pulled(because I have been eating ibuprofen like candy). As soon as I got done with my apt. I went and seen Andrew to find out what they said, and all I was told so far was that he has an apt in 1 month. The nurse said that the only thing she gathered was that he needs to wear his eye patch. I will call in the AM and get the full scoop.
They continued using the meds for the bladder spasums. Between his eyes and bladder those are two of the things that are hindering progress.
Tonite while we were visiting and he was lying flat on his back he could raise his right leg to a 35 degree angle, and the left about 25 degree.
With each day he is amazing.

That is great news Kelly. getting back to eating is very important. Mitch even had to have a feeding tube for a few days. It sounds like Andrew is doing al well as can be.

My continued prayers

Here are several updates about Andrew...he is doing great and I just want to say "thank you" for your prayers! Below are several posts from Andrew's mom...

Things have been going really good Andrew continues to improve. Just as I am writing this note they have dismissed the PSA(the sitter). Which shows the improvements that he has been making.
His Dr. said that in about one more week they will remove the catheter, then the next step will be the feeding tube. As of yesterday all of his medications are now given orally. His appetite is still very good.
The speech therapist came in and showed me some of the scores for a couple of the tests and on the definitions he scored in the 91st percentile. Now on the short term memory was not quite as well, but that's alright.
With the physical therapy they are working with standing and walking along with trunk control. Mind you that all of these things are done with lots of assistance and for very short periods. They are also working on transfers with a slider board rather than the Arjo(which looks like a ride from Disneyland). It is quite the contraption. He has gotten so good at helping get ready for the Arjo and will slide from side to side to help get moved.
These are all very small steps, but in terms of where we have come from. They are huge to us.
Just yesterday Andrew told me that he wants to watch his brothers grow up. Especially Brendan

Good morning. Andrew had another great day yesterday in Pt. He was able to walk with two people assisting him and with parallel bars on both sides. So needless to say he was excited.
Each time I go into his room his is working on moving his legs and sweating while doing so.
His speech therapist is giving him different verbal tests and his is also doing really good. He told her that he wasn't going to walk out of the hospital, but rather run out.
His bladder infection has gotten better, but they want to replace his catheter. Because of the growth of bacteria. I would rather they just remove it all together, but they know best for now. His eyes continue to bother him quite a bit. He wears a patch and rotates it from eye to eye. The doctor said that this is caused from the brain injury, and that time should heal it.
This is just a quick up date as today I have to take Brendan to the Doctors because he needs tubes in his ears, so I am updating now. Then I am headed to the hospital to feed Andrew his breakfast before Brendan's apt.

Andrew has had a very good day. With plenty of company Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Jody, Justin, Claire, Chaz, and Brendan we all got to go outside and watch Andrew do Pt with the wheel chair. He enjoyed a Sonic Cheese burger with fries and a sprite for lunch. He looks really good and in good sprits today.

What a Mother's Day! I have all three of my beautiful boys. I am so truly blessed. As I sit in Andrew's room and look at the progress that he has made and continues to make it makes me very happy.
Yesterday he had a very good day. He will sit in bed and move his legs, stretch his arms. These are things that he could not do a week ago. It is helping his self confidience quite a bit.
Mike and I traded places and I told Andrew that his dad would be here in a min. and well it took a little longer than he wanted, so he had the nurse call me and ask when his dad was coming.
Today we are hoping to get a pass, so that we may go and enjoy the outside as it is going to be a nice day.
Oh I know that I promised new pictures, well he is a little self-concious.
Keep the prayers coming. Thank you!

Today was a good day with the exception of the usual problems. The bladder and his eyes. His spirits where high. Of course he had his buddy Ryker and Cheryl by his side while Chaz and I went on a field trip to the Discovery Center of Idaho, The Old Idaho State Penatenarty, and Idaho History museum.
Andrew got to go outside for a short while. He really seemed to be in good spirit's. Ryker left for a little while and Andrew told me to go and get him, after a short while his personal safety assistant called me and Andrew wanted to talk to me and find out were Ryker was. After Ryker and Chaz went back up there they had a Nerf gun war. Poor PSA she was probably ready to hurt them. I guess the nurse came in and Andrew told the nurse to go away.
During PT he stood up with lots of assistance. He continues to move his feet, and pull up his legs. All wonderful signs.
We are so truly blessed. Good night

Hello Kelly,

Please just know that the 'Boys' have continued in my prayers and those prayers will continue until they have all made a full recovery.

I had the opportunity to talk with Justin at the Pharma Co. today. He interrupted a conversation I was having with another of his Lib friends. I simply told him that I knew his excuse for being a Liberal might just be how his brain was scrambled in that accident. It was nice to see that his humor circuits are still intact and the smiles he had on his not to injured face. Just one measley scar on the bridge of his nose. Both of these Liberal guys crack me up. I usually just play the age 'card' with them as for their excuses for being of the Liberal persuasion. Nice to be young and alturistic I suppose. Just vaugue memories for me now. LOL

You and your entire Family have continued in my prayers both at the Falls and in my spiritual place.

Be well Lady,

Jim

PS: Nice to see you have that garden going good.
