Hello!I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like forums.hannity.com is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be "Hannity Forum Op-Eds" category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

At the top of the index to the forum you'll find two subforums...one for job seekers and one for employers...try there, and good luck.

Freelance is pretty tough because you'll be competing with college kids. I really don't think it will be possible. If you're not on unemployment, I'd seriously look into retail or warehouses if you haven't, and keep trying to find some side projects.

I am a web developer too. Things have definitely slowed down however the jobs have not completely vanished. Some times I do require some contracting help with projects.
If you would like, send me a PM (private message) with your email address. I'll reply, and you can send me your resume and if your experience can be utilized, I will definitely consider you.

I think that freelance is fairly viable in this economy. Companies are laying people off and not hiring, but they still needs things done. Paying a freelancer a few hundred on a project is a lot easier for them to do than hiring someone even part time.
My wife is a freelance writer and editor and has plenty or work right now. She has developed her own client base over the years, but got started on a couple of websites that operate a bit like EBay for freelancers - people post their jobs and freelancers bid on them. I believe one was called Elance or something like that.
It might be tough to support a family of four on it though.

Good point. He could expand his skills to the open market by small adds.. also while looking for those needing his service to include producing a video game or some thing like that in his down time that may be a great money maker to fill the void.
I see adds for programmers at video game websights all the time.

I'd also recommend reaching out to non-profits and any colleges/universities you might have in your area. They tend to have small staffs in these types of areas and are always in need of freelancers.
