Afghanistan's President, Hamid Karzai, has signed a law which "legalises" rape, women's groups and the United Nations warn. Critics claim the president helped rush the bill through parliament in a bid to appease Islamic fundamentalists ahead of elections in August.

The bill lay dormant for more than a year, but in February it was rushed through parliament as President Karzai sought allies in a constitutional row over the upcoming election. Senator Humeira Namati claimed it wasn't even read out in the Upper House, let alone debated, before it was passed to the Supreme Court. "They accused me of being an unbeliever," she said.

Nope. You're dead on. This is politics as usual but the context is a very different culture than we live in. God forbid Sharia Law comes to the US.

the UN says it "legalises the rape of a wife by her husband", and does seem to do so because Article 132 requires women to obey their husband's sexual demands.

Not good. Thanks for posting

Now wait just a minute folks.

These are deeply held religious beliefs and we can't go and judge people (of other nations) because of their deeply held religious beliefs can we now? (he says sarcastically)

Damn straight. Let's get the hell out of there.

The nonsense reason Democrats give for doubling down over there is pathetic. They have yet to give one good reason for Obama's military action in Afghanistan. All we get is that 'well we should of did this to begin with before BUSH distracted us with Iraq!' (que audience applause). But that isn't a reason but rather a deflection. I want to know what in the world we are actually trying to do there.

Removing the need for consent from sex in a marriage isn't the only bad part.

From the article:
In a massive blow for women's rights, the new Shia Family Law negates the need for sexual consent between married couples, tacitly approves child marriage and restricts a woman's right to leave the home, according to UN papers seen by The Independent.

Allowing child marriage and that letting her not escape is attrocious too.

But I really am having a problem proping up a guy that supports this kind of activity...

Nothing new here... it's Shari'ah law as it's been since the days of Muhammad.

No they are not excluded. If they are on an American base she can probably dress as she pleases. In public she will have to wear cover.

I wonder if Michelle will wear a burka? There are designers who specialize in some very nice ones. I'm sure her burka fashion statement will make the news. Or will she just go for a hijab and abaya?

We need to be out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden can be taken down in much better ways than this.

Rape laws, marriage laws and other domestic laws are the province of the country.
If we want to run it ourselves, we shouldn't relinquish occupational authority.

If that's true, it's pretty disgusting. But why should we "leave" if our purpose there is to eradicate AQ and quash the radical elements of the Taliban. If the Iraqis passed the same law, would you say that we should leave there immediately as well?

Wow, so you have no problem with the subjugation and abuse of women.

They didn't train for what they did on 9/11 there. They learned how to fly planes here.

to love, honor, and obey...

Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." (1 Corinthians 7:3-5)

i agree the law is backwards, but it wasn't that long ago that spousal rape in the US wasn't treated as a crime

I have a problem with it, but I won't move to Afghanistan.

If you don't like it, you shouldn't move there either.

It's not our military mission, over there, to insure good laws are passed.

There are thousands of people world wide working to undo these types of laws to give women rights. While it might not be what our military mission is about, as humans I believe that we should all work towards improved human rights everywhere.

Many countries have been influenced to change their laws due to pressures from human rights groups. It's not all about war... there are other ways to do it.
