The soap opera "Guiding Light" is switching off after a 72-year run that predates television.

CBS says the show will have its final episode in September. Like most daytime dramas, "Guiding Light" has suffered from declining ratings and CBS is looking for a lower-cost alternative to the hour of programming.

Anyone still watch this??

Anyone care??

I remember my Grandma used to watch this show religiously.

Got to admire anything that lasts 72 years.

My aunt Nora, may she rest in peace, used to watch that one. She listened to it on the radio I think before T.V. I never watched it. Still a 72 year run is darned good.

I thought it would last forever!

I remember my Mom loved to watch it.

I remember it when I was a little girl in the 60's.

I wonder if this is some kind of April Folls publicity stunt??

That's one I've never watched. All the soaps are in trouble financially and many are axing their biggest stars to lower payroll.

Nah, I've seen it reported by several reputable sources. Apparently, its true.

My grandma watchedit, my mom watched it, and I grew up waqtching it.

I have still managed to catch an episode here or there if I am home sick from work.

I am always sad to see something end that has managed to last so long.

This is a huge blow to Procter & Gamble, which was one of two companies that produced soaps for CBS (Sony is the other). CBS did not renew its deal with P&G for the show.

The big winner is Sony. Their "The Bold and the Beautiful" is the second-highest rated soap despite being on the air only since 1987, and may be moved to one hour. CBS is also rumored to be in contact with former Goodson-Todman staff member Roger Dobkowitz on developing game shows and fill the other half-hour. Dobkowitz was fired by German television network RTL last year in a move that angered many fans of the joint CBS-RTL production "The Price Is Right".
